ALFRED UHRY

(Book)is distinguished as thefirst American play­wright to have wona Pulitzer Prize. anAcademy Award and aTony Award. A graduateof Brown University, Mr.Uhry began his profes­

sional career as a lyric writer under contract tothe late Frank Loesser. His first major successcame when he collaborated with Robert Wald­

man on a musical adaptation of Eudora Welty'sThe Robber Bridegroom which earned Mr. Uhryhis first Tony nomination. His first play, DrivingMiss Daisy, opened at Playwrights Horizons inNew York in 1987. It moved subsequently tothe John Houseman Theatre, where it ran forthree years and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988.The film version, starring Jessica Tandy andMorgan Freeman, won the Academy Awardfor Best Adapted Screenplay in 1990. Thefilm was also chosen as Best Picture. His nextplay, The Last Night of Ballyhoo, was commis­sioned by the Cultural Olympiad for the 1996Atlanta Olympics. It opened on Broadway thenext year where it ran for 550 performancesand Uhry won the Outer Critics Circle Award,The Drama League Award and the 1997 TonyAward for Best Play.
