Professional Development Plan:Student Web 2.0 Research
Introduction and Relative Advantage:
Technology tools have completely changed the way that students can find, make sense of,
organize, and share research. As educators, it is our responsibility to help not only with the
research paper or project at hand, but to help students develop critical 21st Century digital
literacy skills. Such skills prepare them for higher education, workplace, and life research.
Incorporating Web 2.0 research tools into research papers and projects also helps reach
students of varying abilities and learning styles.
NETS-T Standards
1c. Promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify studentsconceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes; 1d. Model
collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and
others in face-to-face and virtual environments; 2a. Design or adapt relevant learning
experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and
creativity; 2b. Develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to
pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational
goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress; 3d. Model and facilitate
effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use
information resources to support research and learning.
SMART Goals and Expected Outcomes:
Teachers will attend four 45-minute sessions (Search, Organize, and Annotate) offered
over the course of four weeks.
Teachers will discuss specific Web 2.0 research tools and how they can be used in the
classroom to help students of all abilities strengthen research skills.
Teachers will choose one tool from each session that they want to try using a research
topic of their choice. They will create accounts if necessary, practice using the tool, and
discuss findings or concerns with the class.
Teachers will showcase their research and reflect on what they have learned. They will
set SMART goals for classroom implementation using at least one tool from each
session. Teachers will check-in monthly with the librarian and/or technology integration
coordinator to address concerns and assist students as needed.

Timeline:
This lesson will take place over the course of four 45-minute sessions after school. The first
three sessions will cover: Search, Organize, and Annotate. The final session will showcase what
the teachers have accomplished and they will reflect on their learning. They will set SMART
goals to use one tool from each session in their classroom within the next three months.
Materials:
1 Computers for each teacher that are hooked up to the Internet
2 Projector, whiteboard, and speakers
3 PreziStudent Web 2.0 Research
Grouping Strategies:
Teachers will remain together throughout the instruction.
Learning Activities:
1 Teachers will participate in a group discussion on the importance of helping students be
effective 21st Century researchers.
2 Using the PreziStudent Web 2.0 Researchas a guide, the instructor will introduce
teachers to a few Web 2.0 tools within each session (Search, Organize, and Annotate).
The instructor will demonstrate an overview of the tool and its potential to enhance
student learning. Teachers will ask questions if needed.
3 Teachers will choose a research topic: one that they assign students, a pseudo topic for
the purpose of this activity, or a topic that they want to learn more about.
4 Teachers will choose one tool from the session and use it to either search, organize, or
annotate their research.
5 Teachers will share how they have used their Web 2.0 tool to search, organize, andannotate their research.
6 Teachers will set SMART goals to use at least one tool from each session with their
students during the next three months. They will agree to meet with the librarian and/or
technology integration coordinator once a month for follow up and support.
Measuring Student Learning Outcomes:
The purpose of any professional development activity is to improve student learning. This
workshop aims to help teachers apply a new Web 2.0 tool in a way that will have a positive
impact on student research skills and ultimately their learning. In order to demonstrate this, teachers will collect student samples of research prior to this training, including works cited
pages, rough drafts, brainstorming notes, and completed research papers. After the training and
supported implementation of at least one tool from each category (search, organize, annotate)
teachers will collect similar student samples. Before and after samples will be analyzed and
compared and reflections will be made regarding student impact.
