Higher Apprenticeship programmes have been designed to train individuals up to foundation degree level, providing them with the knowledge and skills required to meet employers’ and businesses needs.

Higher Apprenticeships are the next step up from advanced apprenticeships and are nationally accredited work-based programmes. This allows employers to invest in their own organisation’s talent and increase productivity and profitability through a highly qualified and skilled workforce.

Integrating academic learning at a higher educational level and on the job practical learning will enable participants to develop into confident and capable management professionals in your business.

What is a Higher Apprenticeship?

“Bury College has provided me with a challenging, yet supportive learning environment to further enhance my critical thinking and reflective skills, contributing to my management performance in my organisation.”Mike Doherty, IT Services Manager Level 5,Higher Apprenticeship in Leadership and Management.

Higher Apprenticeships are an affordable and flexible way to invest in your new and existing staff. By investing in higher level skills you are committing to the continued professional development of your employees, and therefore your business.

Professional Development Upskill and train existing employees; providing the opportunity to progress their careers by gaining the additional skills and knowledge they need to take on more senior roles within the business.

Creating Positions Create an opportunity to employ enthusiastic talent that you can mould and develop for your business.

Progression Develop opportunities for those that have completed an advanced apprenticeship to progress.

How does the apprenticeship work?Higher apprentices work full time whilst studying at Bury College, this also includes independent study. Our team of experts work in partnership with businesses to create and deliver bespoke apprenticeship training programmes that attract, develop and retain a pipeline of talent. The Higher Apprenticeship consists of two parts:• Theory (technical knowledge)• Competence (technical skills matched against national standards)

What can they be used for?Case Study

“The Higher Apprenticeship in Care Leadership and Management Level 5 has given us the opportunity to progress our employee using a structured mutual development plan both from an educational and organisational perspective. As an organisation we value the importance of allowing our staff to develop and grow and the Higher Apprenticeship helps us to facilitate this ethos.”

Business Benefits Higher Apprenticeships can help particularly competent employees reach their full potential. They could be useful, for example, where a staff member is already performing well in their existing role but has the aptitude to move into a more senior position, but lacks the technical knowledge and confidence to take that step up.

In addition to maximising the talents of existing staff, Higher Apprenticeships can also be used to fill skills gaps. An employer may identify a need within the business and the Higher Apprenticeship can be tailored to fit that gap.

Even the best-performing business can do better; a Higher Apprentice can bring the very latest knowledge of techniques and technology to their workplace.

Investing in staff development through a Higher Apprenticeship can improve productivity and performance.

25%A study by ICM Research reveals that employers in England rate qualified higher apprentices as 25% more employable than those who took an alternative route into work.Sources www.gov.uk/government

More than 18,000 apprentices were on a Higher Apprenticeship in England during 2013/14, a 39 per cent increase year-on-year.
