ProfCast Introduction

ProfCast Makes Recording Lectures Easy!

ProfCast is an all-in-one presentation-to-podcast tool for the Mac that of-fers an integrated workflow for creating, recording, and publishing pod-casts. It provides live presentation recording, synchronization of slides with audio, Keynote and PowerPoint support, RSS generation, and publishing support.

All elements of your presenta-tion, including slide timings, bul-let point builds, and voice narra-tion, are recorded. ProfCast al-lows you to record your presen-tation as you give it, using either Apple's Keynote or Microsoft PowerPoint! ProfCast also helps you publish your recorded presentation as an en-hanced podcast.

ProfCast is the perfect solution for educators and professionals looking to provide more flexible, richer media to supplement traditional pedagogical tools such as books, course packs, or notes.

ProfCast is the only application that makes it easy to turn the lecture you are already giving into an enhanced podcast. The result will be complete

with slides, chapters, and audio, all synchronized just as you gave the lecture live! ProfCast inte-grates with your existing lecture software and your presentation

workflow. With integrated help and support documentation, ProfCast is easy to learn and use by even the most inexperienced user.

The most significant feature of ProfCast is that it integrates with the educator’s existing teaching process, and doesn’t require ad-ditional time to have full impact. It's as simple as Launch, Load and Lecture!

"We were very impressed at how you took a complex set of tasks inherent in making a podcast and making it brain-dead simple. As a developer myself, I'm

still scratching my head over how you are able to get the PowerPoint screenshots."

PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS ProfCast integrates with GarageBand 3 or later, for further editing, iWeb, for easy publication to your iWeb managed web site and blog, or publishing directly to your .Mac account. In addi-tion, ProfCast supports publishing well-formed, standard RSS feeds to your ftp or sftp server. By providing a variety of output options, ProfCast puts you in control of your content. After all, isn’t that what you deserve? (**Mac OS X 10.5 requires GarageBand 4 or later for use with ProfCast.)

ProfCast in Education:Every year the demand for rich media to augment and enhance the educational experience has grown. Stu-dents have come to expect richer, more flexible media to supplement traditional pedagogical tools such as books, course packs and even notes. Podcasting especially, has emerged as the most ap-parent instance of this trend, largely due to the open-ness of the podcast format which allows anyone to

use materials distributed through podcasting.

The addition of portable media such as podcasts may seem like a small addi-tion to the pedagogical ar-senal; but it can have a sig-nificant impact. Similar to the manner with which email and the internet have vastly reshaped the academic landscape over the last 20 years, podcasting, or more

likely, the podcasting paradigm has the potential to exert a similar influence.

Students love podcasting because it significantly low-ers the burden of acquiring content. Unfortunately the burden of creation is no lower than with other rich media. ProfCast is designed specifically to lessen that burden and make it easy for educators to provide en-hanced podcasts to their students!

Designed for Educators:Humble Daisy, the maker of ProfCast, is devoted to innovation, as well as it's goal of empowering indi-viduals to be inspired, work and exceed their poten-

tial. We believe that ProfCast integrates well with educa-tor's existing teaching proc-ess, and provides an intui-tive, reliable and fun solu-tion! Today's students see technology, not as an iso-lated tool, but as a means of communicating, collaborat-ing, innovating and learning. ProfCast helps instructors contribute to this process easier than ever before.

"There are a lot of tools out there that are so poorly designed, they make smart people feel stupid." said David Chmura, president of Humble Daisy, Inc. "We wanted to build a tool that made smart people feel brilliant! ProfCast is that tool!"

Until now, capturing lectures has been a difficult, time-consuming and costly process. ProfCast does the

work for them. ProfCast al-lows users to give lectures and presentations as they normally would and is de-signed specifically around a presenter's workflow. Lectur-ers simply launch ProfCast,

add the presentation that they want to deliver, and press the "Start Recording" button. They can then give their presentation the way they normally would. When they are finished with the presentation, they can simply end the presentation, click the "Stop Record-ing" button, and then click the "Publish" button. Prof-Cast provides an intuitive publishing assistant to help them publish their enhanced podcast in a matter of minutes.

ENHANCED PODCASTSProfCast creates 'enhanced podcasts'. Enhanced podcasts are audio files which contain chap-ter markers for titles, images and web links. The images in these files can be viewed on an iPod with photo capabilities or video capabilities, through iTunes, QuickTime or even in embedded in a web page.

"I am a professor at Fordham in NYC and really LOVE this program - I have been doing all the things your software does manually in the last semester and it has eaten up all my spare time. So this is a real life-saver.”

"Dood...sweet. Thanx."

Biochemistry made easy?

ProfCast boosts learning outcomesBiochemistry professor Dr. Martin Latterich not only has to reach more than 500 students each semester, he also has to explain complex bio-chemistry subjects.

He started capturing his multimedia lectures using ProfCast so students could review his lectures at their own pace. That's when he noticed a sig-nificant improvement in student-learning outcomes.

“We have to cover a lot of information in a very short time, so it’s critical for students to have access to lecture material,” says Latterich, an associate professor and Canada research chair at McGill University in Quebec. “I started using ProfCast at the beginning of the year. Students in my section did much better than others, historically. Mid-term test scores showed dramatic improvement. Averages increased from 82 percent to nearly 90 percent.”

Dr. Latterich also uses ProfCast to review and critique his course lectures and seminar presentations.

“Seeing how my slides and lecture as well as student interaction sync-up in real time a much better feedback mechanism than traditional means,” says Latterich. “The software is really easy to use. It’s convenient and much easier than hauling video equipment around.”

Making classroom teaching better!

Ken Riopelle, a researcher and professor in Wayne State University’s de-partment of industrial and manufacturing engineering, began using Prof-Cast in March 2006 to create podcasts of his classroom lectures. He soon realized he was using a technology that was as good as and in some

ways better than the live classroom experience.

“The application alone is worth buying a Mac,” says Riopelle, who teaches courses in technology change management and social network analysis.

“With a ProfCast-captured podcast, my students can both see the slides and hear the lecture. They have control of the pace of the class. Some-times I think it’s better than seeing the lecture live.”

He found this way of learning so valuable, he now requires his students to use ProfCast to create multimedia podcasts as part of their final projects.

Riopelle is using it other ways as well. Wayne State University and Tongi University of Shanghai, China, held an opening ceremony to celebrate their joint engineering management degree in Shanghai. Riopelle captured his speech using ProfCast.

“It was a great way to promote the joint degree, as well as the universi-ties,” say Riopelle.

Globalizing Education One Podcast at a Time

Professor Jeff Curto knew that "podcasting" his history of photography class would be a good way to reach students outside of class. He was con-cerned, though, that atten-dance would suffer. He was wrong.

In fact, classroom attendance increased. In addition, Curto inadvertently created an inter-national photography learning community. He attributes this increased interest to how he creates podcasts.

“People from around the world subscribe to my history of pho-tography podcasts,” says

Curto, professor of photography at the College of DuPage. “This world-wide interest seems to give relevancy to the course for my traditional stu-dents. They are part of a bigger world of learners something much larger than an introductory college course.”

Before ProfCast, Curto recorded his class lecture, then uploaded the audio and slides separately. The process was cumbersome. ProfCast takes much less time, and syncs up his slides automatically.

“Capturing the classroom experience is now much easier, and more logi-cal,” says Curto.
