Originally developed and enhanced for over 20 years byThe Boeing Company, the MSC.EASY5 product familyprovides unique capabilities to accelerate the pace ofyour virtual product development. Complex engineeringtasks involving dynamic systems in a broad range ofindustries -- aerospace and defense, automotive, off-highway equipment, and heavy machinery -- areevaluated conceptually, thereby reducing the risk of not"getting it right" the first time.

As a graphics-based software tool, MSC.EASY5 is usedto model, simulate, and design dynamic systemscharacterized by differential, difference, and algebraicequations using powerful nonlinear simulation tools,application libraries with pre-defined subsystems, and anopen architecture with links to a broad set of softwareand hardware tools used in computer-aided engineering.

Using MSC.EASY5, you assemble your models on-screenfrom primitive functional blocks, such as summers,dividers, lead-lag filters, and intergrators, plus specialsystems-level components including valves, actuators,heat exchangers, gears, clutches, engines, pneumatics,flight dynamics, and more.

After creating the virtual prototype of your system, youare ready to evaluate your system performance usingMSC.EASY5's numerous analysis tools that includenonlinear simulation, steady-state analysis, linearanalysis, control system analysis, data analysis, andplotting. In addition, source code is automaticallygenerated for your real-time requirements.

GRAPHICAL MODELING MSC.EASY5 Graphical Modeling provides a comprehensiveuser interface for all aspects of modeling, simulation, andanalysis. Using the graphical modeling feature, you createon-screen virtual protypes of your system by draggingcomponents into your schematic diagram, establishconnections, and enter parametric data.

Components model subsystems, which could be as simpleas a summation block, or as complex as a highly nonlinearfour-way hydraulic valve, with stiction, friction, hard limits,compressible fluid dynamics, and thermal heat transfer.Each component contains the parametric data to definethe system properties and equations to define thedynamics.

CAE SOFTWARE INTEGRATION

The MSC.EASY5 development team has also recognizedthe need to integrate the software with other leadingengineering applications. As a result, MSC.EASY5 modelscan be co-simulated with controller models in SIMULINK®. Inaddition, multibody mechanical models in MSC.ADAMS™,DADS®, and Pro/MECHANICA® can be tightly integrated withMSC.EASY5’s system models.

Data from MSC.EASY5 can also be exchanged betweenleading structural analysis tools such as MSC.Nastran™ andANSYS®.

REAL-TIME TOOLKITThe Real-Time Toolkit provides for seamless transfer ofMSC.EASY5 workstation or PC-based models into virtuallyany real-time environment that supports FORTRAN or C.This means that the same model used for non-real-timesystem simulation and analysis can be moved into a real-time person- or hardware-in-the-loop computingenvironment.

MATRIX ALGEBRA TOOLMSC.EASY5’s product family includes an interactive script-based program for advanced numerical computation calledthe Matrix Algebra Tool(MAT), and is well suited for linearsystem analysis, controll system design, plotting, andprocessing and post processing of model data.

MAT provides you with a sophisticated graphical userinterface and offers several high-level functions in thefollowing application areas: linear system analysis, controlsystem design, signal processing, and system identificationand optimization.

MAT also has the ability to call user-defined FORTRAN andC functions and provides a suite of efficient linear algebrafunctions, including factorizations, decompositions,equation solvers, and matrix functions.

You can access MSC.EASY5 executable models and runanalysis in an iterative process to perform optimization anddesign-of-experiments.

APPLICATION LIBRARIESMSC.EASY5 offers a comprehensive set of libraries thatsolves many of the problems in modeling. These librariesare targeted to a specific application, and provide pre-built,ready to use models of physical devices such as hydraulicvalves and actuators, internal combustion engines, electricmotors, gears, clutches, heat exchangers, fans, andevaporators—hundreds of physical subsystems that can beused to construct a complete dynamic system model.

These libraries were developed by experts in theirengineering discipline, so that you may apply them withouthaving to be an expert. You may use them separately — ortogether — or with your own developed libraries — toquickly and easily build high-fidelity models of greatcomplexity.

SIMULATION AND ANALYSIS TOOLKITMSC.EASY5’s Simulation and Analysis Toolkit offers a fullsuite of nonlinear and linear analysis you can perform onyour system model. All analyses in this toolkit arecontrolled with fill-in-the-blank data forms, so you don’thave to learn any special analysis language.

Accurate answers, reduced run timesThe Simulation and Analysis Toolkit contains some of thebest numerical methods available. This means you’ll getanswers quickly and accurately. MSC.EASY5 will plowthrough the tough numerical problems that easily defeatother tools.

Because MSC.EASY5 was developed in a productionengineering environment, no problem is too big, too stiff,or too nonlinear for it to handle.

In fact, with tough nonlinear problems like stiction,hysteresis, and hard-limiting, users have reduced simulationrun times up to two orders of magnitude compared withcompetitors’ tools.

The Simulation and Analysis Toolkit includes a full suite oflinear analysis tools:

• Transfer function generation between any two points inyour system

• Frequency response analysis in Bode, Nichols, andNyquist formats

• Eigenvalue calculations and sensitivity analysis

• Full form linear model generation including systemeigenvectors, and A, B, C, D, observability, andcontrollability matrices

• Root locus / stability margins analysis

STEADY-STATE TOOLKITThe Steady-State Toolkit, featuring a robust steady-statefinder, works with even the most nonlinear system models.Known also as a “trim” or “quasi-static” analysis, this toolkitcalculates stable steady-state values for all outputs of yourmodel given any set of inputs.

Using a Newton Raphson iterative method highly tuned fornonlinear systems, MSC.EASY5’s steady-state analysiscalculates answers in seconds, rather than the hours itcould take to integrate to a steady-state solution using adynamic simulation. The operating points calculated withthis toolkit can also be used as a starting point forsimulation or linear analysis.

LIBRARY DEVELOPER TOOLKIT This toolkit elevates your modeling to a more sophisticatedlevel. With it, you can construct libraries containing yourown components. These components, just like thestandard components in MSC.EASY5, can be shared by anumber of users in your company.

Configuration controlThe Library Developer Toolkit includes a built-inconfiguration control system. You can change and update acomponent created with this toolkit, even if it is used byothers. In this case, MSC.EASY5 notifies all users that achange has been made, and automatically updates allaffected models with the latest version of the component.

Smart connectionsComponents created with the toolkit are unique in that youcan define the equations and the associated inputs andoutputs, but also how each correctly connects to othercomponents. This “smart connection” scheme ensuresthat users unfamiliar with your component structure willmake correct connections.

Knowledge capture and legacy code integratorMany companies have old legacy software programswritten in Fortran and C code. This software is expensiveto maintain, and is generally difficult to use. The LibraryDevelopers Toolkit can be used to capture this engineeringknowledge and encapsulate it into MSC.EASY5components and libraries. This toolkit provides a completedevelopment environment to help you build your simulationcode, including a code editor, data dictionary, icon editor,and PDF or HTML embedded documentation. All of this ismaintained and updated by a built-in configuration controlsystem, making it easy to deploy and upgrade your codethroughout the enterprise.
