“The Three Wheeler” bandsaw blade is a special blade for your 2 or 3wheel tabletop bandsaw. Blade breakage and poor blade performanceare common problems with these small saws. These problems arecaused by the extreme flexing of the blade caused by the small size ofthe wheels that the blade runs on and the high speeds normally used. That is why SuperCut has designed “The Three Wheeler.” This blade ismade of a special Carbon Tool Steel with precision, heat-treated teeththat is thinner (.014”) to enable it to withstand the sharp flexing and highspeeds. Try this blade on your saw - you’ll be pleased with its performanceand longer life. And of course, it carries our standard warranty on everyweld.

CUTTING WITH CARBON TOOL STEEL BLADES:

SuperCut Premium Carbon Tool Steel Blades will cut almost anything that can befiled with a standard hand file, including wood, metals, mild steel, and plastic, providedyour blade speed is correct for the material being cut.

Wood is generally cut at blade speeds of 1000 to 4000 fpm (feet per minute). Plasticsare generally cut at slower blade speeds (200 to 800 fpm) to keep the plastic frommelting back together behind the blade as it cuts. Soft metals (such as aluminum, copper, and brass) are cut at speeds of 200 to 1000 fpm, as long as a good releaseagent is used on the blade to keep the metal from sticking in the blade gullets. Mildsteel products are cut at 40 to 200 fpm, preferably with a liquid coolant running onthe blade.

NOTE: all cutting should follow the simple rule of no less than 2 teeth in contact withthe cut at all times, while not allowing more than approximately 10 teeth to contactthe cut. Any fewer than 2 teeth in contact can allow the material to drop into the gulletof the blade, causing teeth to shear off. Allowing more than approximately 10 teethto contact the cut can cause the teeth to not remove the waste effectively and cancause binding in the cut and also damage the teeth and set.

Please refer to Pages 8-9 for more information about choosing the right bandsawblade.

Raker (also called “Standard”) is a good general purpose toothdesign with a zero degree tooth angle. It works well on structuralshapes and thinner materials in wood and metal.

Skip is available in limited sizes, but works well on thick cuttingof paper and wood products. It features widely spaced teethwith a zero degree tooth angle.

Hook is an excellent positive angle tooth design for fast cuttingof thicker materials such as wood, plastics, and soft metals.

All Carbon Tool Steel Blades feature a standard set, which is a recurring sequenceof teeth - one set right, one set left, and one not set.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT BANDSAW BLADE

STEP 1 - CHOOSE A PRODUCT: WHAT TYPE OF BANDSAW DO YOU HAVE?

STEP 2 - CHOOSE A WIDTH: HOW TIGHT DO YOU NEED TO TURN?

STEP 3 - CHOOSE A TOOTH PATTERN: WHAT ARE YOU CUTTING?NOTE: Choosing the right bandsaw blade depends on many factors; including type of bandsaw, condition of bandsaw, what material is to be cut, and how the material will be cut. It is impossible for one blade to work well for every purpose. Some applications need special blades for best results. If you are having trouble getting satisfactory results in cuttingdifferent materials, please call toll free 1-800-356-9918. Our knowledgeable technicians will be glad to assist you.

METALCUTTING BANDSAWS: Use Carbon Tool Steel or Bimetal Blades

SMALL 2 AND 3 WHEEL TABLETOP WOODCUTTING BANDSAWS: Use “The Three Wheeler” Blades

WOODCUTTING BANDSAWS: Use Carbon Tool Steel, Premium Gold Carbide, or Specialty Resaw

Small to large, horizontal or vertical, metalcutting bandsaws use either Carbon Tool Steel or Bimetal bandsaw blades.Carbon Tool Steel blades are more economical to purchase. Carbon Tool Steel blades will cut mild steel if used atspeeds under 200 feet per minute (fpm) for best results, preferably with coolant. If you are sawing in a productionsetting, your saw is in good repair and adjusted correctly, and want the longest life blade available, then you shoulduse Bimetal bandsaw blades. Bimetal blades cost more than carbon blades, but are generally more economical tooperate in the long run, because they can outlast carbon blades by up to 10 times if used properly. Also, they arecapable of cutting harder materials, such as stainless steel.

Small tabletop saws with 2 or 3 wheels need a very thin blade, such as our “Three Wheeler” bandsaw blades. Thechallenge with these saws is that the wheels are so small that a standard thickness blade flexes beyond proper toleranceswhen it travels around these small wheels, thereby shortening blade life. “The Three Wheeler” bandsaw blades aredesigned to withstand this extreme flexing and will give you the longest life on these saws.

Vertical woodcutting bandsaws from 10” and up will use Carbon Tool Steel blades for most sawing needs. OurPremium Gold carbide impregnated blades are designed to be used either in heavy production or by craftsmen whodemand the very best blade available. Our Premium Gold carbide impregnated blades are extremely fast cutting withthe longest life of any woodcutting blades we offer - they are quickly becoming the most used and prized blades in theshops of serious woodworkers. Our WoodSaver thin kerf, carbide impregnated resaw blades are specially designedfor resawing expensive hardwoods when conserving material is very important. Our Hawc Pro resaw blades are bestfor general resawing. They cut fast due to their aggressive set and tooth design, and they work well in more inexpensivewoods. NOTE: Your owner’s manual may say that your woodcutting bandsaw can cut metal, but woodcutting bandsawscan only cut soft metals, such as aluminum, brass, copper, etc. Cutting steel could damage your saw, due to the factthat blade speed on most woodcutting bandsaws (average 800 to 3500 fpm) is not slow enough (40 to 200 fpm) forcutting ferrous metals (i.e. steel). Trying to cut steel at woodcutting speeds will ruin the blade due to the extreme heatproduced.

Horizontal metalcutting bandsaws are typically designed to use only one width of blade.Vertical metalcutting bandsaws and woodcutting bandsaws have the capacity to run a wide range of widths. Here are some minimum turning circle diameters for our most common blades:

1/8” x 14 Raker Carbon .......................................... 3/16”3/16” x 4 Skip Carbon ............................................. 3/8”3/16” x 10 Raker Carbon ........................................ 7/16”3/16” x 8 Hook Three Wheeler ............................... 9/16”1/4” x 6 Hook Premium Gold Carbide .................... 3/4”1/4” x 6 Hook Carbon & Bimetal ............................ 13/16”1/4” x 6 Hook Three Wheeler ................................. 1 1/2”3/8” x 4 Hook Premium Gold Carbide .................... 1 3/4”3/8” x 4 Hook Carbon & Bimetal ............................. 2 1/4”3/8” x 6 Hook Three Wheeler ................................. 2 5/8”1/2” x 3 Hawc Pro Resaw ....................................... 3 1/8”1/2” x 3 Hook Premium Gold Carbide .................... 3 5/8”1/2” x 3 Hook Carbon & Bimetal ............................. 6 1/2”3/4” x 3 Hook Carbon ............................................. 9 1/4”

METALCUTTING BANDSAWS:

The correct tooth pattern for metalcutting is determined by the thickness (cross-section) of material you are cutting. There should be between 2 and approximately 10 teeth in contact with the material at all times. Generally, choosefewer teeth per inch for thicker materials and more teeth per inch for thinner materials. The chart below will give yousome basic guidelines for choosing the correct number of teeth per inch.

WOODCUTTING BANDSAWS:

There is a wide range of what is considered correct for tooth patterns on a woodcutting bandsaw. The general rule isthat fewer teeth per inch provide a faster, but rougher cut; and more teeth per inch provide a smoother, but slower cut.

Solids vs. Structural Shapes:It is simpler to determine the correct tooth pattern for solids than for structural shapes. Structural shapes such as squaretubing and angle pieces need to be cut at the correct angle to keep the teeth in contact with the thinner portion of thecut. For example, if you are cutting a piece of 4” angle with a 1/4” wall, you should match the tooth pattern to the 1/4”thickness (10-14 Variable or 14 Raker) and not to the 4” thickness (3-4 Variable or 3 Hook). Therefore, the 4” angleshould be placed in the saw so it sits as a pyramid instead of an “L.” The following diagrams show the correct orientationfor cutting various structural shapes.

PROPER TECHNIQUE FOR SAWING STRUCTURAL SHAPES

Stack Cutting:Stack cutting should always be avoided where possible, because regardless how the material is clamped in the visethere will always be varying thicknesses to cut and you cannot match teeth properly. Also, vibration is a major problemwhen stack cutting - if you must stack cut, make sure to tack-weld the ends and band the stack together as tightly aspossible to reduce vibration or movement between the pieces.

Alternating Set - tooth set where the pattern is left, right, left, right, etc.

Beam Strength - the ability of a blade to resist deflection (leador wander) caused by excessive feed pressure

Binding - when the material being cut is under tension andpinches the blade. Also, if the material being cut is too thick forthe tooth pattern of the blade, causing the waste material to notbe removed from the cut and thus catching the blade - this canseverely damage the blade

Blade Back - the edge of the blade opposite the teeth

Blade Body - from the bottom of the gullet to the back of theblade

Blade Width - from the tip of the teeth to the back of the blade

Body Swaging - when the guides on a bandsaw are incorrectlyset too tight they can squeeze the blade and actually reshapeit, thereby ruining the blade

Bowing (Cupping) - the tendency of a blade to cut a bowedvertical cut - often caused by too little blade tension or excessivefeed pressure, thereby affecting beam strength

Break-In - starting a new blade out by cutting with a lower feedpressure for the first 10-20 cuts, which greatly improves bladelife

Catch Blocks - small waste blocks of wood that are glued inthe bandsaw guards in position to stop a blade when it breaksto prevent excessive damage to the blade upon breakage

Chatter - vibration that is caused by either too much or notenough feed pressure - will quickly damage a blade

Chip - the curl or waste that is removed by the tooth when cutting

Chip Clearance - the extra room in the cut channel that allowsthe chip to clear the cut and be removed

Contour Sawing - curve cutting on a bandsaw

Coplanar - refering to the blade wheels of a bandsaw being inthe same plane of adjustment

Crosscut - sawing a piece of wood across (perpendicular to)the grain

Crown - refering to either the curved, convex surface of a bladewheel on a saw - or a blade that has a swaged curve to its body

Feed Pressure - amount of force applied to push the materialbeing cut into the blade

Feed Rate - the speed (inches per minute) that the blade iscutting through the material being cut

Feet Per Minute (FPM) - the rate at which the blade is travelingaround the wheels

Fence - a rigid device that the material being cut slides againstto maintain consistent cut thickness

Flutter - refering to a bandsaw blade rapidly moving side to side- usually caused by too little tension

Fretwork - delicate inside cutting in material to produce decorativework - usually done on a scroll saw

Galling - the tendency of certain materials (like aluminum) toadhere to the teeth or sides of a blade

Guides - either rollers or blocks on a bandsaw that limit a blade’sside to side movement and keep it cutting straight

Gullet - the curved bottom section between the teeth of a blade

Gullet Cracking - cracks that appear in the bottom of the bladegullets - caused by excessive feed pressure or blade fatigue

Hook Teeth - tooth shape that has a positive degree of toothangle

Kerf - the width of waste that the blade takes out of the materialbeing cut

Lead - when a blade wanders to one side while cutting due tothe grain direction of wood, hard spots in what is being cut, orbecause the blade has been damaged

Loading - the inability of the teeth to remove the waste in a cut- usually caused by trying to cut too thick of material with toofine of a tooth pattern, leading to burning of the teeth

Modified Set - tooth set where the pattern is left, right, left, right, straight, etc.

Points Per Inch - generally the way a hand saw is measuredwhich involves counting how many points or teeth fall inside ofan inch measuring tip to tip

Raker Set (also called standard set) - tooth set where the patternis right, left, straight, right, left, straight, etc.

Release Agent - a substance that is designed to be applied tothe blade prior to cutting a material prone to galling

Resawing - sawing thick pieces of wood into thinner pieces

Ripping - sawing a piece of wood in the same direction as(parallel to) the grain

Scroll Cutting - sawing with very small turning diameters - oftenintricate decorative work

Set - bending of teeth right or left during manufacture

Skip Tooth - tooth design with wide, flat gullets between teethwith zero degree tooth angles

Single Point Fence - style of fence with a single point of contactwith the material being cut - allows for adjustment of materialbeing cut to the lead angle of the blade - useful for cutting veneer

Teeth Per Inch (TPI) - number of teeth within one inch asmeasured from gullet to gullet

Tension - force applied to tighten or loosen a bandsaw blade, thereby increasing or decreasing beam strength

Tires - material stretched around bandsaw wheels to provide aslip resistant surface for the blade - also allows the use of variouswidths of blades without damaging the set of the blades

Tooth - the actual cutting projection of a blade

Tooth Angle - angle of the tooth face in respect to an imaginaryline perpendicular to the blade

Tooth Back - the surface of the tooth opposite the cutting edge

Tooth Face - the surface of the tooth that faces the direction oftravel

Tooth Pitch - the measurement from the tip of one tooth to thetip of the next tooth - usually measured in tenths of a inch

Tracking - process of balancing the blade on the blade wheelsso it won’t run off front or rear of wheels

Variable Pitch Teeth - combination of regular teeth of differentpitches, gullet depths, and set angles - not a consistentmeasurement from tooth to tooth

Work Hardening - the tendency of steel to become harder asit is repetitively cut or flexed
