SAINT JOHN CHRYSOSTOM (c. 344-407) September 13 “Speaking truth to power” may have become just another cliché, but doing precisely that cost John “the Golden Mouth” (Chrysostom) his diocese and, after exile and a forced march, his health and life. “Renowned for eloquence, heroic in suffering” (Sacramentary), John’s scriptural insights still comfort and challenge. Mystical theologian, he bids Eastern Christians, whose principal Divine Liturgy bears his name, to lift up their hearts to “God ineffable, beyond comprehension, invisible, beyond understanding, existing forever, always the same.” Model pastor, he warns Roman Catholics in the Liturgy of the Hours not to neglect God-in-the-flesh: “Would you honor Christ’s body? Do not scorn his nakedness, honoring him here in church with silken robes, while neglecting him cold and naked outside. What use to burden Christ’s altar with golden chalices, while Christ himself starves to death? What use dressing the altar with gold-woven cloths, while denying the shivering Christ the clothes he needs? Do not adorn the church while ignoring your needy brother: he is the most precious temple of all!” (Saturday, Twenty-first Week in Ordinary Time).

Virtual 5K Walk for Life On September 26th, the Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland will be holding their inaugural Virtual Walk for Life. For many years, the Women’s Centers have conducted their actual Walk for Life at Forest Preserves throughout Chicagoland. With this year’s restrictions on gatherings, we have gone virtual.

You can walk wherever you wish, whenever you wish, as far as you wish. You can create a team or walk alone. You can sponsor friends who are walking if you cannot walk yourself. You don’t even have to walk … you can run, skate, skip or bike. Whichever you desire.

To register yourself, create your team, or sponsor someone who has already registered, visit www.gotwc.org and click on “WALK REGISTRATION” at the top right of the home page. You will be taken to the fundraising page where you will find all the information you need.

FORGIVENESS Nearly ten years before, a son and father had parted ways when the business they shared went bankrupt. The son blamed the father. They did not speak to each other again. Then the father became seriously ill. The mother called the son and told him he had be er come soon. The son walked sheepishly into the hospital room. The father mo oned his son to him and whispered: “Did you ever think you could do anything that would keep me from loving you?” Resentment and anger are foul things, the first reading from Sirach tells us. Remember the last things. Stop ha ng. Live by the commandments. As St. Paul writes to the Romans, we are to live for the Lord and die for the Lord. Jesus’ parable in today’s Gospel reminds us of God’s compassion. The immense sin of humanity has been forgiven and stricken from the record. We are to forgive others in the same way. Copyright © J. Continued from last week…..maximizing our assets #6 Friends: Auxiliary bishops are a rather new thing, at least as far as Catholicism measures time. Remember we've been around for a couple of thousand years. Auxiliary bishops don't seem to have been a thing until Leo X in 1513. There were something from around the 3 or 400"s, probably earlier, called suburicarian bishops but only in the diocese of Rome. These days there are six of them. Each cardinal bishop holds jurisdiction over a church in a suburb of Rome. My suspicion is that these guys were kept close at hand just so there would be a bishop or two handy to ordain someone bishop who was elected pope. Remember popes were never chosen from among bishops in those days. Cardinal Deacons, who once were actual deacons, now are also bishops who work full-time in the Vatican. The senior cardinal deacon announces the newly elected pope from the balcony of the Vatican. Then you have the Cardinal priests who now are also usually bishops, they used to be the real pastors of Rome, but are now the honorary pastors of the CARDINAL, or main, churches of Rome. So these days the Pope is elected by the Bishops pastors and deacons of the diocese of Rome and its suburbs as has been done for a thousand years. You will notice that I have not mentioned auxiliary bishops yet. That's because when this ancient system formed there were none. The present system of election by cardinals with kings and emperors having a veto was pretty much in place by 1059, a thousand years ago. So where did auxiliary bishops come from? Generally from the east. Around 630AD a new group of non-Christians began the conquest of the completely Christian eastern Mediterranean, Syria, the Holy Land, Turkey, Egypt, North Africa etc. At first there was religious coexistence, but by around one thousand AD, Christianity was increasingly discouraged in the lands mentioned. Bishops with their flocks fled west and their dioceses passed into dim memory. When they arrived in the west they would occasionally make themselves useful to the local bishop, while still bearing the title of their old now defunct diocese. The Roman Province of Numidia was overrun by anti -Christians in 672AD and in the long run the bishop and his congregation renounced the faith, fled or died. If he fled there would be a spare Libyan bishop just hanging around the diocese Rissottoconfunghi in Italy. Why not give him something to do? He could be of help (auxilium in Latin) for instance, when the exiled bishop of Augurus, in the Roman province of Libya fled it left an empty episcopal position which stayed empty until somebody (probably Leo X 1512) got the bright idea of naming a bishop for the defunct diocese. You see, a curious fact: A bishop must be the bishop of a place. Why waste all those good unused dioceses when you could appoint extra bishops? They would have their own dioceses, but were unfettered by any pastoral responsibilities there. They could do all the drudge work like confirmations and dedicating monastic hermitages and that sort of thing, thus freeing up Leo's friends to come stay with him at Rome and help him with his many important art projects. Leo was a Medici after all. Thus were invented auxiliary bishops. More next week.
