We Proclaim Christ Crucified

The whips cracked leaving red marks on Jesus’ back amid shouts from the soldiers. Crowds fol-lowed behind kicking up dust on the dirt roads. I had never experienced Good Friday like this be-fore. I was in Ecuador living for a year among the poorest of the poor. When the actors playing Jesus and the two thieves were lifted high on the three crosses I felt intimately connected to Jesus’ sacrifice. I thought of Jesus 2,000 years earlier, in Jerusa-lem, but also of Jesus today, in my neighbor-hood, among those living in destitute poverty. I thought of the people who scavenged through the city dump every day searching for anything of value they could sell. I thought of our youth group members portraying Jesus’ passion, who had little opportunities for a better future. These people understand suffering. Today I see this reality in the local Hispanic im-migrant community with whom I have been blessed to walk through life. I hear stories of the pressure from gangs, drug violence, and wars, which they have fled. I hear the horrors they faced on the journey to United States. I see the daily struggles of loneliness, lack of extended family and support, families separated by depor-tations, and the rejection many face in the com-munity. We come together on Good Friday and reenact the Stations of the Cross here on the streets just like many did back home. We feel an intimate connection to Jesus on the cross. These people understand suffering; and yet, in Ecua-dor , in all my travels across Latin America, and today in the Hispanic immigrant community, I am inspired by the strong faith that transcends all this suffering to bring hope, joy, and peace.

Parish Food Drive Next Weekend ‘‘As they were going out, they met a Cyrenian named Simon; this man they pressed into service to carry his cross’’ Matthew 27:32 Next weekend, March 24th and 25th we will hold our monthly food drive. This month our donations of food will go to Fr. English Center in Paterson. This or-ganization provides many services to thousands of people on a monthly basis. All items must be nonperishable food. ‘‘And the LORD, their God, shall save them on that day, his people like a flock. For they are the jewels in a crown raised aloft over his land. Proclamamos a Cristo Crucificado Los látigos se agrietaron dejando marcas rojas en la espalda de Jesús en medio de los gritos de los solda-dos. La multitud siguió detrás levantando polvo en los caminos de tierra. Nunca antes había experimen-tado el Viernes Santo como este. Estuve en Ecuador viviendo por un año entre los más pobres entre los pobres. Cuando los actores que interpretaban a Jesús y los dos ladrones fueron elevados en las tres cruces, me sentí íntimamente conectado con el sacri-ficio de Jesús. Pensé en Jesús 2.000 años antes, en Jerusalén, pero también en Jesús de hoy, en mi vecindario, entre los que viven en pobreza misera-ble. Pensé en las personas que hurgaban en el vertedero de la ciudad todos los días buscando cualquier cosa de valor que pudieran vender. Pensé en los miembros de nuestro grupo juvenil retratando la pasión de Jesús, que tenía pocas oportunidades para un futuro mejor. Estas personas entienden el sufrimiento. Hoy veo esta realidad en la comunidad local de inmigrantes hispanos con la que he tenido la bendición de caminar por la vida. Escucho historias de la presión de las pandillas, la violencia de las drogas y las guerras, que han huido. Escucho los horrores que enfrentaron en el viaje a los Estados Unidos. Veo las luchas diarias de la soledad, la falta de apoyo y la familia extensa, las familias separadas por las deportaciones y el rechazo que muchos en-frentan en la comunidad. Nos reunimos el Viernes Santo y recreamos las Estaciones de la Cruz aquí en las calles, como hicieron muchos en casa. Sentimos una conexión íntima con Jesús en la cruz. Estas per-sonas entienden el sufrimiento; y sin embargo, en Ecuador, en todos mis viajes por América Latina, y hoy en la comunidad de inmigrantes hispanos, estoy inspirado por la fe fuerte que trasciende todo este sufrimiento para traer esperanza, alegría y paz. El próximo fin de semana, 24 y 25 de marzo, tendremos nuestra colecta de comida mensual. Este mes, nuestras donaciones de alimentos irán al Fr. English Center en Paterson. Esta organización of-rece muchos servicios a miles de personas mensualmente. Todos los artículos deben ser ali-mentos no perecederos.
