PROBLEM STATEMENT
Despite the introduction of the Biopsychosocial Model to medicinethirty-seven years ago, our culture and our health care system continues to operate from an artificial divide between physicalhealth and mental health. This divide is a barrier to achieving thehighest quality care here in Vermont and elsewhere across the country.
This will be the fifth annual Bridging the Divide conference. In pastyears we covered the conceptual underpinnings of collaborativecare, how we teach (and learn) collaborative practice, and how wecan work toward more widespread implementation. This year wewill focus on the role of behavior in medical treatment, and on someof the pitfalls in inter-professional communication. There are manymyths and misconceptions around how we talk about and documentpsychosocial issues in our daily work; these have been an importantbarrier to effective collaboration. We have some outstanding guestfaculty who are national or international experts in their fields.
We will also hear from experts on the primary prevention of emo-tional, behavioral, and stress-related physical disorders in children, and on ADHD.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Discuss how to implement and work in collaborative practice, including best practices for screening, diagnosis, and management of physical and mental health problems.
2. Discuss the legal and HIPAA rules that guide communication and record-sharing.
3. Discuss best approaches to the primary prevention of childhood emotional and behavioral problems.
4. Discuss best practice approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD.
