Problem Set 8

Problem 1 The uniform 60-lb log is supported by the two cables and used as a battering ram.If the log is released from rest in the position shown and gravity acts downwards, calculatethe initial tension induced in each cable immediately after release and the correspondingangular acceleration α of the cables.

Figure 1: Problem 1

Problem 2 The uniform rectangular slab is released from rest in the position shown to allowgravity to act. Determine the value of x for which the angular acceleration is a maximum, and determine the corresponding angular acceleration.

Problem 3 The uniform 15-kg bar is supported on the horizontal surface at A by a smallroller of negligible mass. If the coefficient of kinetic friction between end B and the verticalsurface is 0.30, calculate the initial acceleration of end A as the bar is released from rest inthe position shown and gravity pulls the rod downwards.

Problem 4 The small rollers at the ends of the uniform slender bar are confined to thecircular slot in the vertical surface. If the bar is released from rest in the position shown andgravity acts vertically downwards, determine the initial angular acceleration α. Neglect themass and friction of the rollers.

Problem 5 The homogeneous solid semicylinder is released from rest in the position shown. If friction is sufficient to prevent slipping, calculate the equation of motion for the rollingobject.
