Elliot and Mary Smith were surprised when they received two little boys instead of just one. Richard and Raymond Smith were born on July 7th and from the day they were born have been inseparable. Richard and Raymond grew up in Lehi, they attended Lehi Elementary, Junior High and High School. They were both involved in sports such as, football and freestyle boxing. Growing up, their father was a member of the Lehi Riding Club. The two of them would attend the meets alongside their father, eager to jump on a horse and fill in when needed. Richard married Julia Holmes in the Salt Lake Temple on November 19, 1954, and they began their life together here in Lehi. Together they have 5 children, 17 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 2 on the way. Raymond married Marcia Ann Chipman in the Logan Temple on August 6, 1959, and they too chose the city of Lehi to start their family. Raymond and Marcia Ann have 3 children, 6 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and 1 on the way. Both twins have created a living legacy of family members who have hard work and determination instilled in them. Richard and Raymond worked side by side as ironworkers at Geneva Steel for 40 years. They have served in many LDS church callings from Primary to the Bishopric. They actively participated with the Utah High School Rodeo Association for over 20 years. Raymond served two terms as President of the High School Association. They lived side by side and together had an arena where they schooled and helped many upcoming rodeo stars. One of their proudest accomplishments was coaching the Lehi Giants little league football team. They coached together for 20 years and made an impact in the lives of many young football players and created lasting friendships with many people in the community. The PRCA gained two tough cowboys when Richard and Raymond joined the association in 1963. Richard competed in bareback riding while Raymond competed in saddle bronc riding. Later, they both decided steer wrestling was their event. They were both steer wrestling contestants in the Lehi Round-up from 1963-1979. One or two of their pockets were always full with the prize money from their hometown rodeo. The twins both received their PRCA Gold member card. Richard and Raymond always say they would be twice as tall and twice as tough if they didn’t have to share. Together they enjoy hunting, fishing and yard work. As of late, you can catch them in the pool swimming together three to four times a week. Everything with these two men has come in two’s, their toughness, their jokes, their songs and most of all their impact on the lives of those they come in contact with. One week after our city celebration, they will celebrate their 80th birthday. 80 years of love, life and laughter, 80 years of spending it with your identical best friend. Richard and Raymond represent the best of Lehi and the true western heritage of our city.
