That’s what The American Legion is all about—serving those who served our country—heroes like Tom Shepard who suffered horrific wounds on the front lines of freedom.

While patrolling in Afghanistan, shrapnel from an IED blast literally tore his body to shreds. Jagged shards of hot metal ripped through his arms and legs. His left leg had to be amputated above the knee. Much of the muscle in his right leg is gone. Wounds in his arms required hundreds of stitches. He lost two fingertips on his right hand, and he suffered flash burns on his face.

Veterans like Tom deserve our help as they struggle to heal physically and mentally from the horrors of war. Sadly, far too many Americans wave the flag but do little or nothing to help. They either get too busy with their own lives to

think about the plight of others less fortunate or wrongly think that the “government will take care of them.”

Yes, the VA does a lot for America’s returning heroes, but the demand for services and the red tape involved leaves many wounded veterans languishing in pain and poverty when they need help—and need it NOW. Did you know that it can sometimes take a year or more for a wounded veteran to receive disability assistance from the government?

It’s shameful that blind, paralyzed, burned, and limbless veterans—and those suffering from traumatic brain injuries and PTSD—lose their homes, have their utilities shut off, and can’t feed their families while they wait and wait for the benefits they were promised.

I, for one, won’t turn my back on those who gave so much on my behalf. And, if you truly care about America’s veterans, I’m sure you won’t either.

The Legion relies on your continued support to provide invaluable services to veterans in need. Your gift now will help veterans entangled in red tape get the benefits they earned and need to survive. I can’t think of a better way to show your appreciation for a wounded warrior than that!
