Although the information was obtained directly from each school and to the best of our knowledge believed to be accurate, we realized the criteria we used may have been too general and only considered a few factors of what makes each school great. While this list did include some outstanding schools, we realized that some equally great schools may have been left out.

We have decided to do things a little dif-ferently in our upcoming fall issue. We real-ize every student is different and they each have their own individual strengths we want to nurture. For a family with a student ath-lete, an established athletic program may be a determining factor when choosing a school, whereas a family with a child who has a musi-cal talent, the fine arts programs and facilities may weigh heavier in their decision. After lis-tening to feedback from schools and families, we realized our rankings were too general and not tailored to the uniqueness of our readers. Our families are unique, with unique gifts and unique goals. We have decided to provide each

expansion. “It has been extremely exciting to watch DSA and the City of Doral grow and expand. We’re thrilled to be a part of

this thriving community,” comments Princi-pal Ben Troge. Divine Savior Academy’s new

high school building will be located to the north of their current campus on an adjoining 7.75 acres

of land. This additional 88,000 square feet of space will house 23 classrooms, 4 science labs, tiered lecture rooms, an out-door classroom, a gymnasium, a weight room, a media center, an

audio visual lab, a computer lab, a chess room, a dance studio, an art studio, and a music lab. The campus will also include 4 tennis courts, a soccer/football field, additional playground area, and over 200 additional parking spaces. The entire DSA community will benefit from this expansion.

While the facility growth alone is exciting for all of the Divine Savior Academy family, the expansion in programs and activities offered is what they are most excited about. The Acad-emy is beginning their Project Lead the Way STEM program next year in their new state-of-the-art STEM labs, as well as their rigorous Advanced Placement Capstone Program. As for

the fine arts programs, the new building will provide a light-filled art studio, a large music room for choir and the future band program, and a separate chess room for their national-ly-recognized chess team (winners of the National U1600 High School Championship in 2013). The media center will include a computer lab, a student study center, and a video production lab. Outside of the classrooms, their new gym, tennis courts, and soccer fields will provide the space to expand their sports program and provide the training facility for their student ath-letes to thrive in. DSA’s Athletic Director Dan Unke comments, “These facilities will help us take the next step in elevating all our athletic programs and start serious strength training with our new state-of-the-art weight room and fitness center. The new high school building will open its doors in August 2015 just in time for the 2015-2016 school year. On the heels of so much growth in the Doral community, the academy hopes to serve an additional 400 students with their new high school addition. David Posnack Jewish Day School

The second school that we had the privilege to visit with was David Posnack Jewish Day School. David Posnack Jewish Day School in Davie is a premier K-12 college preparatory Jewish day school serving Broward and North Miami-Dade Counties. Founded in 1974, the Posnack School will close out its 40th an-niversary year by opening a brand new, state-of-the-art high school building and gymnasium. The new Paul & Maggie Fisch-er High School will make history as the first purpose-built com-munity Jewish high school in the State of Florida. With close to 50,000 square feet of space, the new building will help ac-commodate the school’s burgeoning population. When it opens, the new facilities will set the standard for secondary education in Florida and help Posnack fulfill its mandate to be at the fore-front of educational excellence. Graduates rank in the top 5% of college applicants nationwide. The school is a pioneer in the use of new instruction techniques that promote greater math fluency. Alongside top-notch STEM, language, and social stud-ies, Posnack boasts award winning theater and music depart-ments, and an extensive athletics program that benefits from the school’s location on a stunning 40-acre campus. A one-of-a-kind South Florida educational gem, Posnack prepares their students to be successful leaders in college and beyond. They will open

Riviera Perparatory School

Riviera Preparatory School was our last stop in this segment of visits to schools with ongoing expansions and renovations. The school broke ground in August 2014, on an approximate 27,000-square foot addition that will be completed prior to the start of the 2015-16 school year. The addition includes a com-bined auditorium and cafeteria, with a full-service kitchen that will offer students an array of dining choices. It will also feature an expanded dance studio, a new library/media center, multi-use meeting rooms, and offices. This phase was included in the origi-nal design of the building, which first opened to students for the 2011-12 school year. “Now we’ve reached the point where the student body will benefit as a result of the additional facilities,” said Peter Cohen, associate director of Riviera Schools. “Our performing arts department is enthusiastically looking forward to all that the new facility affords it,” Cohen added. The audito-rium will boast a fully equipped stage with professional lighting and sound systems that will become the gathering spot for all of school’s special functions, celebrations, and many performances throughout the school year. Given the continued evolution and integration of technology, including tablets in every student’s hands, the Library/Media Center will also serve as a technolo-gy hub for the collaboration of independent work and research. Riviera’s dance program has grown tremendously in the past four years and has experienced much success; the new dance studio will allow it to continue down this path. Riviera Schools are fully accredited, nonsectarian, co-educational, independent day schools for preschool through 12th grade. This year has been an eventful year for Private Schools Guide. As editor, I get the opportunity to work closely with a number of private schools in South Flor-ida. This allows me to go behind the scenes and report back to families on exciting upcom-ing opportunities for our families. We recently had the privilege to visit three high schools that are undergoing campus expansions and renovations. We would like to extend our gratitude to these schools for allowing us behind the scenes. This privilege allowed us to see all the hard work and investments going into our children’s education and school environment. These new schools have invested in some excep-tional state-of-the-art facilities and are well-equipped to offer some really amazing opportunities for academic growth as well as individual growth. Students and their families have some ex-citing opportunities to look forward to in the 2015-2016 school year, like new classrooms, new libraries, larger gymnasiums, and even renovations of existing facilities. At Private Schools Guide, we would like to congratulate these schools for their dedication to providing quality education. This is not an easy endeavor nor one to be taken lightly, a lot of time and money goes into creating an environment where our children not only thrive but also enjoy being in.

cal diagnosis among those who require special education needs. The condition impairs a student’s ability to stay focused on a problem through resolution. The hyperactivity and impulsiveness also make it a challenge to focus long enough on a topic to understand it.

Dyslexia: Dyslexia is a learning disorder characterized by diffi-culty reading. The difficulty stems from troubles identifying speech sounds and relating them to letters and words.

Autism: Autism spectrum disorders are commonly char-acterized in varying degrees by impaired social interaction, difficulties in verbal and nonverbal communication, and restricted and repetitive behaviors. In the 2013 publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, all autism disorders were combined into one overall diagnosis of ASD, where-as previously they had been recognized as subtypes. Some people with ASD excel in music, math and art.

Down Syndrome: The most common genetic chromosomal disorder and cause of learning disabilities in children. It is associ-ated with physical growth delays and mild to moderate intellectual disabilities. Education and proper care have been shown to improve quality of life in those affected by this disorder.

There are a number of organizations and groups which are making considerable progress in tailoring to these needs. The Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) and National Center for Special Education Research (NCSER) have made education for students with special needs all the more easy to gain access to public and private education programs.

Florida has special programs aimed at helping students with special needs in order to prevent them from falling behind from their peers. The expectation is success but the route is different and some may say less traveled. The approach requires trained

As of 2011, America was the only free-market OECD (Organiza-tion for Economic Cooperation and Development) country where the current generation was less educated than the previous one. The educational challenges all of our children are facing are very real. No one comes into this world with the same set of strengths and capabilities, so for families with special needs, the challenge can be even more daunting.

The term special need describes students who require special educational needs in functional development skills. The reality that every child is unique, with their own set of strengths and weaknesses, allows them the opportunity to succeed through means of a different approach. It is important to understand child development in order to recognize a child with a delay in one or more areas such as physical development, cognitive development, language development, social and emotional devel-opment, and adaptive development. In most cases, children with special needs can accomplish their own milestones with the help of a tailored approach.

The tailored approach offered by some private schools and special education programs allows teachers to interact with children on a closer basis due to the low student-to-teacher ratios. This specialized and individualized approach provides them a more comfortable environment to learn in. Some research studies have found that children with specific needs who attend pri-vate schools learn more efficient strategies when coping with learn-ing issues.

What defines special needs?There are various underlying factors which can help

define the term “special need” and a number of disorders which hinder the abilities of a person. These roadblocks force students to struggle with their individual development and academic life. Some of them include, but are not limited to, the health

SPECIAL NEEDSand life skills of children, which includes those with special needs. Children Resources inclusion Program offers 1:4 teacher student ratio in their preschool and elementary grades. The small student/teacher ratios facilitate educational differentiation, allowing the children to work at their personal level and at their own pace. One-on-one teaching is also available. Educational Plans are developed for each child, supporting their strengths and weaknesses. Occupa-tional, speech, behavioral and physical therapies are offered on site for the children that may need them. or parents, the most heart-racing, adrenalin pumping moments happen when you let go and watch your child try something on his or her own. The

moment the training wheels come off, the first trip down the driveway on the skateboard, the time our children ride the school bus – these are more than just mem-ories, these are critical moments that define growth and change. For many families, the first time they send their child to camp is one of the biggest let go, hold your breath, and watch them soar moments in childhood.

In today’s world of high-tech kids and families who have a constant connection to each other, it’s essential to take the time to emotionally prepare for camp. It is, of course, important to prepare the first-time camper, but families need to make sure that Mom, Dad, younger sib-lings at home – virtually everyone – is ready to adjust to camp life. The American Camp Association® (ACA) provides the following tips to help ease first-time families into the camp experience:

n Parents – As parents, it is important to focus on the positive as-pects of camp. Remember that separation is natural, necessary, and inevitable – what better place to have that first experience than in a caring and nurturing environment designed specifically for chil-dren? Parents can also focus on the amazing benefits of camp – an experiential education like no other teaching valuable 21stcentury survival skills like leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and in-terpersonal communication. “The greatest gifts that parents can give their child are independence and resiliency,” said Peg Smith, ACA’s chief executive officer. “Parents should remember that by choosing camp they are giving both.”

n Siblings – Bob Ditter, family therapist and one of the nation’s leading experts on camp, cautions it is likely that the child left at home will experience separation anxiety and truly miss his or her sibling. To help them prepare, be sure to talk about the upcoming separation. Before the eldest child leaves for camp take a picture of your children together that the sibling can keep in their room or carry around. Remind your children about the communication they can have with each other through letters and postcards.

n Other family members – Be sure that everyone is aware of the upcoming experience. Let family members know how to contact camper if they are interested through letters and care packages — make sure they are aware of any communication policies the camp may have, i.e. no phone calls or restrictions on what can be sent in a care package. In addition, an increasing number of camps are using Web sites to display photos or video during the camp session. According to ACA’s 2011 Emerging Issues Survey, 75 per-cent of responding camps indicate that they post photos or videos to a Web site for families to view. Forty-five percent indicate that they post information, photos, and videos to social media outlets like Facebook. Families should be sure to ask camp directors about these options.

Camp is an equal opportunity life-changer. By sending a child to camp, families are truly giving a gift that lasts a lifetime. By taking steps to mentally prepare for camp, families not only keep from get-ting “kid-sick” for their camper, but they can stay positive about the camp experience – which goes a long way toward helping first-time campers adjust to life at camp. And just like taking off the training wheels, the moment families see their camper radiating confidence and joy they will feel that burst of pride and gratitude that they allowed their child this experience.

Camp has become a staple of the summer season. Each year, mil-lions of children, youth, and adults head to the hills, lakes, valleys, and parks to participate in the time-honored tradition of camp. And, while most people easily conjure up images of campfires and canoes, there is a lot more to the camp experience. Here are ten of the things you may not have known about the camp experience.

Camp is older than dirt, almost literally. Started in 1861, the camp experience turned an impressive 150 years young in 2011. The secret behind the longevity? “Camps are constantly adapting to meet the changing needs of today’s families,” said Peg Smith, chief execu-tive officer for the American Camp Association® (ACA). “And yet, in essentials, camp is very much the same as it was 150 years ago – kids still have authentic, life-changing experiences.”

Camp is worth its weight in gold, and then some! The camp experience is life-changing – developing friendships and memories that last well beyond the final campfire. And, there is a camp for lit-erally every budget. Often camps offer special pricing or financial assistance, and some camp experiences qualify for tax credits or for payment with pre-tax dollars. Green is “zen.” Research shows that first-hand experience with nature, like those at camp, reduce stress in children and help them better handle stress in the future. In addition to teaching children how to be good stewards of the environment, camps are teaching children how to enjoy the world around them and take a minute to breathe deep and feel the nature, which ultimately teaches them how to de-stress the natural way.

Mommies and Daddies do it too. Camp is not just for children and youth. There are family camp experiences, and camps for single adults, senior adults, and any adult that wants to relax and enjoy all camp has to offer. Adults benefit from the same sense of community, authentic relationships, and self-discovery that children do. Camp is an excellent vacation option, allowing adults to try a variety of new activities in a safe and fun environment.

Try this on for size! Camp is a great place to try new activi-ties and hobbies. Afraid of rock walls? According to ACA research, 74 percent of campers reported that they tried new activities at camp that they were afraid to do at first. And, those activities often

leave lasting impressions. In the same survey, 63 percent of parents reported that their child continued new activities from camp after returning home.

Manners matter, and often linger. The camp experience teaches more than just archery or lanyard making. The entire expe-rience is made of teachable moments, perhaps one of the biggest is how to live with a group of people. Campers learn to pick up after themselves, respect each other’s property, and to say “Please” and “Thank You.”

Veggies taste better with friends. Hollywood and fictional novels may have given camp food a bad reputation, but in truth, camps are constantly exploring healthy food options, and often are at the fore-front of things like allergy specific diets, healthy snack options, and vegetarian meals. According to ACA’s 2011 Emerging Issues survey, 90.7 percent of responding camps indicated that healthy eating and physical activity was an important or very important issue.

If everyone else went to camp, maybe there’s something to it! Camp has played an important role in the lives of some of the most talented people in history. ACA’s family resource site offers a list of notable campers – including business professionals, celebrities, artists, and great thinkers.

Camp gets those neurons pumping! Education reform de-bate and concern over summer learning loss have pushed academic achievement into the spotlight. Research shows that participation in intentional programs, like camp, during summer months helps stem summer learning loss. In addition, camp provides ample opportunity for developmental growth, which is a precursor to academic achieve-ment. And, because of the “hands-on” nature of camp, often children who struggle in traditional education settings do well at camp.

Camp builds leaders for the 21st century and beyond! Independence, resiliency, teamwork, problem-solving skills, and the ability to relate to other people — these are the skills that tomorrow’s leaders will need, and the skills camp has been adept at building for 150 years. “Tomorrow’s leaders will not be those who can type or text with lightning speed, they will be those who can have a face-to-face con-versation and articulate their thoughts, ideas, and values,” said Smith. “Tomorrow’s leaders will be able to relate globally and find common ground with people who are vastly different from themselves — people from different backgrounds and cultures. Tomorrow’s leaders will be made and educated by experiences like camp.”

International student programs are a challenging yet irreplace-able experience. Several schools in South Florida offer their stu-dents international programs in areas such as international business and entrepreneurship. Teachers and advisers both agree that if a student can afford joining these programs, they should jump at the opportunity.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) in particular, is highly reputed and offers some really exciting opportunities for stu-dents in the US. The nonprofit organization has operated all over the world for over 50 years and offers its programs through the aid of more than 3,500 schools globally. Currently more than 145 countries have schools that offer the IB program, includ-ing the US. The IB programs are available for primary years and middle school years and offer participating students to study an international curriculum that is considered challenging. The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) is growing in popularity and is ideal for students between the ages of 11 and 16 years.

Students who are interested in the International Baccalaureate programs can pick from the following eight subject groups based on their skills and interests.

Both the assessment criteria and the curriculum for these pro-grams differ from the ones taught in non-international institutions. The IB program focuses on helping students learn their choice sub-jects in greater depth. The stress on understanding core concepts helps students master the art of studying and learning, instead of merely memorizing. The flexibility given by the International Baccalaureate organization to its member-schools allows for end-less creative learning opportunities. Students that enroll in these programs benefit by getting a chance to explore this new style of teaching. They also have exciting opportunities for personal devel-opment while also expanding their potential for future job opportu-nities. Enrolling in an international studies program can open many

setting, where they believe attention to the individual is paramount. Students who participate in IB studies benefit from almost 20

years of experience. Since 1996, Gulliver Preparatory School has been an IB World School and was the first private school in South Florida to be authorized to offer the IB Diploma Programme. In the last 16 years students have achieved a 96 percent passing rate, been awarded bilingual diplomas for up to fifty-two percent of graduat-ing seniors and have logged as many as 33,150 hours for Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) in one year.

Conchita Espinosa Academy (CEA)

Conchita Espinosa Academy (CEA) provides children with a complete education, which extends beyond traditional schooling, in order to create well-rounded individuals. Reflective of CEA’s com-mitment to preparing the whole child for the world of tomorrow, educating students to be fully bilingual is a priority. The Spanish language program is based on conversation, quality literature, com-position and grammar to promote acquisition, development and flu-ency. It utilizes “best practices” methodology to ensure that students become listeners, speakers, readers and writers of Spanish. Classes are custom-designed to meet the needs and challenges of children in various levels of Spanish language, ranging from native speakers to non-speakers.

CEA benefits from a collaborative relationship with Spain’s Min-isterio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte. Each year “Auxiliares de Conversación” travel from Spain to work with the Academy’s exist-ing Spanish language faculty, aiding and enhancing the program’s efforts to create fully bilingual students. In addition, as a part of their partnership, CEA hosts several events a year in conjunction with the Centro Cultural Español, where students have the oppor-tunity to attend master classes, concerts and exhibits by Spanish and Latin American artists free of charge, as an extension of their educational program. For many years, CEA students have traveled to Spain with students on cultural exchange programs. This has allowed their elementary and middle school students to witness first-hand the way other people live in other parts of the world and allowed them to partake in their customs, their cuisine, and even the way they study.

students and parents these days is that

boarding schools are only a choice

ure. Yes, there are times where parents

do choose a boarding school for one of

those reasons, they may have a demand-

ing job that requires constant travel and

some may be caregivers to other fami-

ly members, but there is so much more

to boarding schools. For most families,

boarding schools are a matter of tradi-

tion and honor. It is about offering their

children an environment that also teach-

es them discipline and independence. It is also seen as a way to prepare

a child for the college experience. The biggest challenge most students

face when going away to college is the transition of being the respon-

sibility of others to being responsible for themselves.

College-preparatory boarding schools like the Philips Exeter

can use this simple three-step plan to

help you narrow it down to your final

1. Explore your options – There are hundreds of boarding

schools in the US alone. It is not wrong to assume that some of

them will not match your expectations. Start by narrowing down

your choices by making a list of schools which offer all the things

that you are looking for. Factors such as a coeducation school or

single-sex, or whether you will be okay with your child attending a

religious school, need to be determined so you can eliminate schools

that do not fit your criteria. Also, things to consider are the grades

offered or how far away the school will be. Are you looking for a

specialized school such as military or pre-professional arts, or do

you need a school with support programs such as ESL, ADD/ADHD

support, or learning differences support.

2. Think beyond just academics – While it is good to pick a

boarding school with a high average SAT score, you want to keep

in mind that the institute should also offer great extra-curricular

activities. The logic behind this is simple. Your child will be spend-

ing a lot of time here and student-life balance will be critical. A

well-rounded education includes athletics, fine arts, performing arts

and social activities as well.

3. Visit the schools – This is a sacrifice for a lot of parents and

not just a financial one. This is also a long term investment in your

child’s future. Visiting your top choices is as important as test driving

a new car. Make a list of questions or concerns and do not hesitate
