PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN Balance - Visual equalization of the elements in a

work of art

Harmony - Visual quality of wholeness or oneness

Proportion - Relationship in size of one component to another

Rhythm - Causes the viewer’s eye to sweep over the art work in a certain manner.

Emphasis - Development of a main idea or focal point

17

BALANCE Feeling of equality

Law of rest – suggest stability, security, satisfaction and peace

Factors affecting balance: Position, size, proportion, value, quality, shapes and direction of elements of arts.

Kinds: Formal, Informal

18

Formal Balancewhere the art elements in a composition are balanced in a mirror-like fashion (it does not have to be exact but close).

19

Formal Balance

20

Informal Balanceequilibrium is achieved by the balance differences in the art elements. Suggest freedom of the artist.

21

Informal Balance

22

Diagonal Balanceequilibrium is achieved by the balance on equal sides of a diagonal line

23

Radial BalanceThe axis is the center point and the design or pattern appears to "radiate" from that point.

24

HARMONY Visual quality of wholeness or oneness that is

achieved through effective use of the elements of art and principles of design.

“Law of Order”

Possible ways to achieve harmony: repetition, contrast, transition, harmonizing ideas

25

Harmony achieved by using related colors

28

PROPORTION Deals with the proper or significant relation

between two things or parts.

“Law of Relationships”

Expressed in size, number and position

Space also play an important part

29

The objects are not too large or too

small for each other. They are of a realistic

size.

30

Hierarchical proportion

31

RHYTHM Uses of some of the elements of art to produce

the look of action or to cause the viewer’s eye to sweep over the art work in a certain manner.

Connected path along which the may travel.

Obtained through repetition of visual units, progression of size and continuous line movement.

32

Look at the painting and concentrate on how your eyes bounce from one star to

another

33

34

EMPHASIS Principle of art by which the eye is carried first to

the most important thing in any arrangement. Concerned with dominance The development of a main idea or center of

interest.

35

The object is different from everything else in the painting and therefore it

"stands out".

36

The “spotlighting”

of the man give emphasis

on him

37

CONCLUSION
