Balance
Over here the amount of white and black paint is almost equal on the left and right sides of this painting. Even though there is a larger black section at the top left side it is balanced out by a large white section in the bottom right section of the painting.
This image is radially balanced. The pattern resonated from a centre point in the image and so make the image balanced.
Not only are the two men physically balancing on one another but the image is very balanced and even. Both figures take up almost the same amount of space with there bodies
Proportion
The proportions of the Parthenon completely dwarf the people standing around it. The scale of this building was used to inspire awe and to portray power to the poeple looking up at it.
A huge artwork of a massive saw is playing around with our ideas of what the proportions of a typical saw would be.
In this sculpture, the artist has played around with proportion by distorting various body-parts to give the figure a caricatured look.
Repetition
These changing cubicles on a beach are repeated in a row and the colour has been repeated as well which gives the beach an orderly and elegant look.
Here the same brush motion and shape has been repeated to create a patterned, aesthetically pleasing image.
An image has been repeated to create an ordered, uniform pattern even though the image itself is quite fun and not necessarily ordered.
Dominance
Here the lady in the bed is dominating the image because of the light surrounded her and the rest of the image fades away as it is all fairly tonally similar. There is also a contrast in this image to help make the woman the focal point.
This image expresses dominance because the lady on the swing is made the foal point by the ray of light shining on her and the gentleman pointing at her. The fact that everyone else is focused on her makes us focus on her too.
Venus is the focal point of this image with the other figures and the tree leading our eye towards her.
Contrast
Two women sitting next to each other. Different generations, different cultures. The one woman is dress incredibly conservatively, she looks possible religious where as the other woman has cropped hair, a mini skirt and a short sleeved shirt.
Red and green are contrasting colours and in this photograph the bright red of the flowers pop out beautifully against the contrasting green
The contrast between black and white in this image make it, in my opinion, a lot more interesting to look at. The structure and forms of the tree are enhanced against the light back drop.
Direction
There is a lot of movement in this sculpture, because of the stance of the legs and flow of the whole sculpture, it looks like the sculpture is pacing forward.
Our eyes follow the winding, stretching road as if we were travelling along it.
Our eye naturally follows the elongated, tapering towers of this cathedral upwards ad the direction is enforced more by the pointed spires and the long thin windows.
Harmony
The soft pink colours of the petals and the perfect symmetry of this mandala are gentle on the eyes and bring feelings of unity and calm to the viewer.
No matter how you put the couch together, the pieces all fit together harmoniously.
There is an incredibly harmonious feeling to this image, the colours are softened and the figures stance and expression is one of calm.
Variety
In this image, even though the colour is similar throughout, there is a variety of different textures and prints.
Here we have a variety of berries.
This painting is an explosion of variety. Variety of colour, shapes, patterns.
Symbolic Meaning
A Banksy piece commenting on contemporary fast-food culture
A contemporary Maori man with traditional tattoos
Images such as those of the Apollo 11 moon landing, serve as a testament to human achievement and are symbolic of our thirst for knowledge.
Composition
The effectiveness of this piece is solely reliant on its precise and detailed composition .
This painting is a still life so is entirely based on the composition. How affective the painting is as a whole depends on how the items in the painting have been laid out. I think Cezanne’s use of composition in this painting is very effective.
It is amazing how the composition in this photograph frames the lone cloud nestled perfectly between to two cliff faces and the ocean.
