Principal’s Message 12th May 2015

Dear Parents and Friends,

I trust all the mums in our community were suitably spoilt last Sunday.

Thank you to the many parents who assisted with Mother’s Day stall last week. Again, it showed what dedicated parents we have in our school. Thank you!

NAPLANMy best wishes for those students in Years 3 & 5 who will participate in the NAPLAN tests this week. Thank you to Miss Waller, Mrs Killin, Mrs Jacks, Mrs Grigson and Ms Boyle for preparing the students.

Our approach within the whole school curriculum program recognises that preparation for testing is a whole of school responsibility. It is through rich learning experiences from Prep to Year 6 that provides the students with the skills and knowledge to participate in the testing program. Let us also put into perspective this process of external testing – it gives a set of data collected on a particular day under conditions that are not the norm for students (especially Year 3) while testing knowledge, skills and understandings that they may or may not have had an opportunity to learn prior to the test. Over emphasising the importance of the tests to stu-dents may have the undesired effect of raising their anxiety level and thus hinder their capacity to demonstrate their best effort.

Australian Curriculum Reporting and Assessment Authority (ACARA) chief executive, Robert Randall, emphasises the importance of “quality teaching” rather than “drilling and excessive practice around sample tests” which is not helpful. “Once you’ve done a couple of practice ones to familiarise the students you are losing any gain you get from it.”

My own children, who have both sat the NAPLAN tests in recent years, found that a good hearty breakfast, and a supportive and encouraging hug went a long way each morning.

Reassure your children that this is simply another school activity – all the preparation is now done and all they have to do is try their best on the day.

Cross Country CarnivalCongratulations to all students who participated in the school cross country last Friday. It was a wonderful morning with so many students giving their best. I was particularly impressed with how the students supported each other, either by cheering or giving a congratulatory comment at the end of the race. Many thanks to Mrs Donna Jacks for her organisation and the continued training of the St Joachim’s School Cross-Country Squad.

Year 5 CampI look forward to joining the Year 5 students on their school camp at Coolum from Tuesday to Thursday next week. Luther Heights Youth Camp offers an outdoor education program focused on learning and taking risks in a safe environment. The camp aims to stretch the students’ imagination, build teamwork, confidence and trust through activities ranging from high, low and medium ropes, the giant flying fox, raft building and creative development. I am extremely grateful for the dedicated staff members who will be away from their own families for two nights. I can assure parents that your children are in very good hands.

Inter-School SportCongratulations to the students in Years 4 – 6 who successfully commenced their respective competitions last Friday. By all reports, the teams gave 100% - well done everyone.

P&F Meeting - MayPlease note that there will be no P&F meeting tonight, Tuesday 12th May due to a large number of parents attending the parish sacramental workshop. The P&F will hold over agenda items to the June meeting.

Have a great week,

Chris

Dear Parents,It was wonderful to have so many mothers and even some grandmothers at our Mothers’ Day prayer assembly yesterday afternoon. Thank you to Mrs Marshall and the students of 4 Red for leading us in prayer in celebration and thanksgiving of our mothers.

As the end of the Easter season approaches, the gospel readings from John continue to focus on God’s love for us. In recent weeks, John’s gospel has had Jesus describing himself as the ‘good shepherd’ and as the ‘true vine’ as he prepared his disciples for their mission in spreading the Good News of God’s kingdom. This week’s gospel describes some of the richest parts of John’s text, where we Jesus’ commandment of love, “to love one another as I have loved you.” As I mentioned to our Year 4-6 students in Prayer of the Church yesterday, these words are a mantra of how to live our lives- so straightforward. How could so many generations of human beings fail to understand this simple message?

Today and on Thursday, Brisbane Catholic Education Religious Education Officer, Anne Victor is visiting St Joachim’s to work with our teachers, who will be released for a session to work with Anne and myself as we continue to develop our whole school Religious Education program.

On Thursday the teachers will be joining staff from St Agnes, Mt Gravatt and St Catherine’s Wishart in a twilight professional development on Assessment and Reporting in Religious Education.

I look forward to seeing the children and parents preparing for the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist at tonight’s workshop at St Agnes commencing at 7pm. A reminder for parents who have children involved in this year’s program that there will be a Confirmation workshop this Saturday 16th May- 2-4pm at St Joachim’s and a Eucharist workshop at St Agnes next Thursday evening, at St Agnes, commencing at 7pm.In preparation to receive these Sacraments of Initiation, the Year 4 students will participate in Reconciliation on Monday 25th May from 9am. The candidates will be confirmed in on of the two ceremonies presided by Archbishop Mark on Tuesday 26th May at either 6pm and 7:30pm at St Joachim’s Church. Please continue to keep these children and their families in your prayers.

Bishop Joseph Oudamen will visit our parish on the weekend of !9th-21st June. Bishop Joseph will celebrate mass with our school community on Friday 19th June at 9am, followed by morning tea with the staff.

Wishing you God’s blessing for the coming week, Amanda

OSHC NewsDear parents/carers,What an exciting year it has been so far at OSHC! This is our first entry into the school newsletter for the year but we endeavour to write something in here every week to keep you updated. A few highlights from the year so far: Easter vacation care was a huge success for both your children and our staff alike. The children are getting excited for next vacation care and are coming up with lots of suggestions – please keep these coming in! We also love hearing your feedback! Another highlight has been watching the integration of our lovely preppies this year into OSHC. They now absolutely love coming, doing exciting new things every day and are no longer shy about asking for what they would like to do! Lastly our new OSHC gardens which you may have seen just outside the side door of our building should bring us beautiful cherry tomatoes, blueberries and strawberries in the spring. We are happy to announce that the Department of Education has increased the licenced number of children we are allowed to take from 75 up to 90 children. This is exciting as it has allowed for a few permanent spots to open up and gives us more leeway in taking extra bookings on certain days. However, the downside is that we have limited staff all with different availability on different days. This means that on some days we will not be able to take extra bookings due to a lack of staff and we are required by law to work to a 1 staff to 15 children ratio. Also a reminder that if your children are attending before school care and need breakfast they need be here before 7.45 am. And that our OSHC service closes at 6.00 pm. Please make sure children are picked up before this time. From 6.01 pm there will be a charge of $25.00 per 15 minutes per family.

Regards Kristy and Michelle

Mother’s Day Stall Our Mother’s Day Stall was a big hit this year. All the children bought some lovely gifts so hopefully all our mums felt very special on Mother’s Day. Very occasionally in life you get the chance to achieve something extraordinary; something that will inspire others and prove something to yourself. Oxfam Trailwalker is one of those rare opportunities. It’s an epic journey that changes lives forever and it’s happening in Brisbane on Friday 19 June 2015. The journey sees myself and three work colleagues trek through 100km of bush trail from Mt Glorious to Mt Coot-tha within 48 hours. Three of us have never attempted this before and our team are aiming for under 25 hours. It is not a relay, our team has to start together, stick together and finish together.

The Oxfam Trailwalk began in 1981 as a training exercise for the elite Queen’s Gurkha Signals Regiment in Hong Kong. As well as being an extremely physical activity, its purpose is to raise vital funds to support people living in poverty. It has since grown into one of the world’s ultimate team events with almost 200,000 people taking part and $140 million raised in support of Oxfam’s work.

By donating to my team you are making a significant difference to the lives of others. You are helping families to build water taps, installing boreholes, toilets and handwashing stalls in communities, building schools and training teachers to provide people with the skills and tools they need to help them create a way to earn an income to

build a brighter future. For more information about how your donation helps others refer to https://trailwalker.oxfam.org.au/3852/the-differ-ence-you-make. I am immensely proud that that we are able to be a part of this worthy cause. It is something I will always remember. To donate to Oxfam and help me and my team reach and hopefully exceed our goal of $4,000 please click on the link below. Please remember, every little bit helps.

PARISH MUSIC

Who me?Well, do you think music at Mass is important?

Absolutely!What can you do?

Who me???Yes, you!

I can sing in tune but so can everyone. No not everyone can, and we need more singers.

Who me? Yes, you! Look it’s time to stop thinking that others can keep the Church going. The parish needs both singers and keyboard players. Other instruments would be great too. Can you get a little group together who would provide music once a month? Would you like to join an existing group? Do you know anyone who isn’t even a Catholic but enjoys making music and might be interested? Take a risk, think creatively. So yes, I am talking to you, contact the parish office. Ph: 3349 2280 or E: [email protected]’s time to jump in, to contribute and to feel the satisfaction that comes from being generous!

Primary school children are invited to attend CLOW at the 7.30am Mass at St Joachim’s Church on Sunday, 17 May 2015.

We are looking for people who might like to volunteer to facilitate CLOW at the 7.30am Mass at St Joachim’s once a month. Full training and support is provided. If you would like to be a part of this rewarding ministry, contact Jo at the phone number or email address listed above. Sacramental Program – Confirmation & First EucharistPlease be reminded to attend Workshop B on Tuesday (ie 12 May) at 7pm at St Agnes’ Church. Unlike the Parents Session which was offered at two different time slots, Workshop B is a one-off session which needs to be attended by the child and a parent (both parents are more than welcome though). We ask that you go through Chapters 4- 5 of the book with your child in preparation for the workshop. Please also hand in your completed Bread and Wine sheet at this workshop. We are now taking preferences for Confirmation and First Eucharist time slots. Please note that priority is given to families who attend any of the 4 parish Masses every week, after which preferences are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. With 92 children to accommodate, it would be greatly appreciated if you could nominate at least 3 preferences to allow for some flexibility in scheduling. There is a limit of 10 families per Mass. For a complete list of Mass times and venues, please refer to the handout that was distributed at the start of the program. You may email your preferences to [email protected]. We regret to inform you that the Sunday, 9am time slots are full – please consider the Sunday, 7.30am and Sunday, 6pm Masses instead.
