YEAR 9 ENTRIES FOR THE ACT BELONG COMMIT POETRY TO PERFORMANCE ESPERANCE ARTS POETRY EXHIBITIONIn late May, visiting poet Anne Pettit came to Esperance to run some poetry workshops with the Esperance community. We were lucky enough to have Anne conduct her workshop with a select number of English students. Students enjoyed the experience very much and, as a result, some students have written their poetry to contribute to the Esperance Arts Poetry Exhibition.

ARE YOU READY FOR THE PLASTIC BAG BAN STARTING IN JULY? THE YEAR 9 AND 10 STUDENTS IN GIFT MAKING ARE!The Home Economics task required students to decorate and transform a white singlet into a reusable shopping bag.The design process started with a research session on the Boomerang Bag Initiative. The students also researched Tie-dying and Shibori techniques.

From their research, the students created a sample of the tie-dyeing techniques to help them understand the process and fine tune any problems.

A class set of white singlets were then transformed into multi-coloured pieces of art using string, rubber bands, wooden blocks, buckets, poles and fabric dyes.

Once dry, the singlets were converted into shopping bags using a non-sewing technique. Students measured and cut strips at the base of their singlet. These strips were then knotted repeatedly to secure the base into a bag.

EDUCATION PERFECT LANGUAGES WORLD SERIES 2018The annual Education Perfect Languages World series took place between 21st and 31st of May. The aim of this competition is to complete a series of learning activities and challenges in foreign languages (French, Italian, Chinese, Maori, Indonesian, Japanese and many others) and collect points for individual students and their schools.

This year, 165 students gave Esperance Senior High School its best scores ever-recorded: 72000 points and 158000 questions. Despite the fierce competition from large secondary schools in the State, Esperance Senior High School managed to remain in the top 30 schools (out of 144) in WA.Year 8 student Lisa Warne achieved the highest score and the only Emerald award in the school cohort with 5082 points. She admitted to working on her language challenges every day after school to obtain this commendable result. Well done, Lisa!

Caleb Shipp made history by becoming the first year 7 student at Esperance Senior high School to obtain a Gold award (4002 points), while Toby Gerschwitz (also in year 7) gained a Silver award (2653 points). Their excellent standards will certainly inspire other students to follow in their footsteps.

Other notable high achievers include veteran competitor Marissa Dattani and Jenaya Headley with Gold awards; and Caitlin Hindley, Nikahla Krul and Cassandra Libo-on as Silver award recipients.

Overall, this has been another great year for Language students at Esperance Senior High School. Congratulations to all participants and see you all next year!

YEAR 11 AND 12 AUTOMOTIVE The year 11 Automotive students have completed Semester 1 and most of them have indicated that they have achieved their best ever school high school report. When asked why this is the case, the students unanimously replied that they are really enjoying the course, plus they are backing it up by working the hardest that they ever have in class and doing some homework, as they are focused on gaining apprenticeships. The students have identified and set goals for their courses for Semester 2 and into Semester 1 in year 12. Great effort, year 11s!

The year 12 students are maintaining the high standards that they set for themselves back in year 11. A number of them have positioned themselves for an apprenticeship with their Workplace Learning employers through a mature, committed and focused approach. The year 11 and 12 students have realised the benefits of working in our fantastic Trades Training Centre and the opportunity it provides in assisting with gaining training and employment in a major local industry.

KALGOORLIE CUPOn Monday the 11th of June, 22 year 8 and 9 students, Mr Landers, a couple of supportive fathers and I travelled to Kalgoorlie to compete in a regional football competition. We slept that night at John Paul College in swags on the gymnasium floor. On Tuesday morning students were woken up at 6am to have breakfast and leave for the Oasis Playing Fields.

Once arrived at the grounds, students were welcomed by temperatures in the single digits and strong winds. Immediately the kids were straight into runs and warm ups to keep their fingers from frostbite. Our first game was against Kalgoorlie Boulder Community High School. The boys came out of the blocks firing and didn’t let up all game, winning comprehensively by a score of 64 to KBCs 13. Our next game was against our hosts, John Paul College, who put up a good fight defensively but couldn’t break down our stingy defence. The end score was ESHS 49 points to JPC 1 point. Our last fixture game was against our cross town rivals, Esperance Anglican Community School. This game was where our boys really put their foot down, with the result being 70 points to the 1 goal.

Next up was the Grand Final against our toughest opponent for the day, JPC. JPC came to play this game and it was back and forth for the whole 40 minutes. Our boys proved too strong and in the end came out winners with ESHS 45 points to JPC’s 24 points.

Our well deserving co-captains, Ryan Quinlivan and Ben Murray, led the way all day, putting their bodies on the line and attacking the contest hard. They were supported well by Ruben Wakeham, Oscar Griffiths and Natnat Abdullah as well as Malachi Riley, who had a field day up forward, finishing off everyone’s good work and kicking 10 goals for the day. Mr Landers and I were incredibly impressed with the students’ on-field performance but, more importantly, how well they conducted themselves off-field.

CLONTARF - GOLDFIELDS CUPThis year we travelled to Kalgoorlie with 17 of our boys to try and reclaim the Goldfields Cup. We competed against seven other Clontarf Academies from the south west region. We played three games in total starting off with a very convincing 39 – 0 win. Unfortunately we lost the following two games though the boys put in a tremendous effort.

The games were played with good, hard footy but in the Clontarf spirit. Dominating on and off the ground with a best on performance was NatNat Abdullah, closely followed for runner up: our captain Sheldon Graham. It was great fun and the boys gained a lot out of the day. We are looking forward to the next one!

We are almost half way through the year and this means that the important process for the year 10 cohort choosing their Pathways for years 11 and 12 is soon to begin.

UNIVERSITY PRESENTATIONS

A good number of students interested in the ATAR pathway had the opportunity to take part in university presentations from Curtin, Murdoch, Notre Dame and ECU on June 14th in the school library. The informative presentations were well received by students, and helped to make them aware of the potential value of their hard work in upper school. Below are some photos of our year 10 students gathering information at the presentations.

2019 SCHOOL BALL

The date for the 2019 School Ball has now been decided and the Civic Centre has been booked for Saturday April 6th. Hopefully, everyone will have enough time to get organised for the big night!

EXAMS

It was great to see the effort, attitude and behaviour displayed during the year 10 Maths, Science, Humanities and English exams this week. I’m sure all the hard work demonstrated during the preparation lessons will pay off. Well done to all year 10 students!

WORK EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITIES AND FURTHER STUDY OPTIONS

Youth Education Officer Geoff Poole has organised an opportunity for work experience for students planning to enter a vocational pathway next year. This provides on-the-job experience so students can be more confident in their choice of career direction. It can also enable students to impress employers to help secure a place for their workplace learning component of a VET course.

The first group of students, from HASS classes 4, 5 and 6, will be preparing for their work experience during Tuesday clubs at the start of term 3. They will go to their chosen workplaces during week 4 of next term. Mr Poole will repeat this program for students in HASS classes 1, 2 and 3 who are not going to the University Camp, starting in week 4 and going to workplaces in week 7. The remaining students will have an opportunity to participate in sessions from week 7 and will go to workplaces in week 9.

COUNTRY WEEK

Good luck to the 28 year 10 students who will compete in basketball, dance, volleyball, touch, hockey, AFL, netball and soccer teams at Country Week during the last week of term. The following students are congratulated on their Country Week selection: Cameron Brown, Cam Grant, James Gray, Jonte Meyer, Will Peucker, Lachlan Shaw, Jevan Tholstrup, Bryce McDonald, Cooper Tamlin, Ivy Bondarenko, Macey Tromp, Meg Baker, Sophie Chivell, Danni McMahon, Shari Rogers, Gage Brown, Ethan Duckworth, Hardy Fisher, Eli Jefferies, Rachelle Jones, Summer Newton, Casey Shearer, Miki Thorp, Max Campbell, Olivia Kipling, Emma Torelli, Lily Henning and Lewis Fitzpatrick.

ATAR students have all received their Semester 1 exam results. A number of students would be quite satisfied with their marks. Many students I have had discussions with have indicated how much they have learnt from these exams. Most students have gained a better understanding of how to prepare and execute good study habits in the lead up to exams. Although these first set of exams can be quite daunting, they make good practice for the end of the year and for the year 12 WACE exams.

The students have also commented on aspects of their exam technique that they can improve on, including their time management (attempting all the questions), and their understanding of the meaning of the different terms used in questions (e.g. describe, compare, discuss).

Students who have battled in ATAR and VET courses over this year are urged to keep the communication lines open and honest with subject teachers. Ask questions if you don’t understand something. Teachers at ESHS will do everything possible to help, but if you don’t let them know, then they won’t be able to help.

Thank you to all the businesses in town who take our Vocational Education and Training (VET) students for Work Place Learning (WPL) on a regular basis. This commitment to support and develop up to 90 year 11 students each week is certainly appreciated. VET students who are not going on country week will use this time to gain valuable experience at WPL for all of week 9.

Parents and students had the opportunity to listen to representatives from the Perth based universities last week. The presentation was a chance to understand the requirements of getting into, studying at, and learning the lifestyle of University. Thank you to all who attended.

Upper School Reports were emailed out on Friday 15th June. I have already seen most of the students whose results have given me cause for concern. If any parent/carer wants to discuss their child’s progress, please ring to make an appointment as early as possible next Term. (I will be in Perth for Country Week during week 9.)

If you have any concerns regarding your child’s year eleven studies, then please feel free to contact me at the school on 9071 9555 or by emailing [email protected] .

Brett Landers Year 11 Coordinator

Page 10: Principal’s Newsle © er 2 Wee… · year 7 and 8s protective behaviours presentation On Tuesday 24th July next term, Kayelene Kerr, ex-student of Esperance Senior High School and

At the year 12 meeting on Tuesday this week, the Semester One reports were discussed. The students were reminded about just how close they are to finishing their secondary education. In a perfect world all of the year 12 students would achieve their West Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) at the end of this year.

Ideally, the Vocational Education and Training (VET) students will have ‘ticked all the boxes’ by Friday, September 21st. For some students, obtaining their WACE at the end of the year will not be possible unless they pass their Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessments (OLNA) in August. Likewise, all VET students need to complete an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Certificate at level II - or higher – in order to be eligible for their WACE. If you have any concerns about your child’s progress with their WACE, please contact me as soon as possible, bearing in mind that I will be attending Country Week during the last week of this term.

Over the last week I have made a concerted effort to speak with each of the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) students about their performance in semester one, their goals in terms of the ATAR they’re hoping to achieve, and their intentions for next year (and beyond). Hopefully, students can see the benefit in continuing to apply themselves, with a view to getting the best result that they can achieve at the end of the year.

Good luck to all of the year 12 students who are attending Country Week. Hopefully, it will be one of the year’s many highlights. I expect that those students attending the revision courses during the first week of the school holidays will also find that experience rewarding. I have recently received more information about other revision courses that are being run during the July break, so please contact me as soon as possible if you are interested in attending.

The first ‘Careers Breakfast’ took place last week with 23 students in attendance. They heard presentations from a secondary teacher, an occupational therapist, a pharmacist, an engineer and a nurse. Thank you to Danny Smythe, Howard Reddyhough, Ryan Norris, Matt Walker and Mary Bertola for coming in to speak with the students about the careers that they have pursued. The year 12 students can gain a lot through chatting with people who actually work in these areas. There will be another careers breakfast next term.

Representatives from Curtin University, Edith Cowan University (ECU), Murdoch University and Notre Dame University visited the school last week. Thank you to the parents/carers who came along to the Parent Information Session. The students attended an information session on the Thursday. Hopefully, these presentations have provided some extra motivation and direction.

A number of information sessions have been planned for Term 3. These will help to assist students in making the move to life after school. The topics for these sessions include ‘careers’, applying for university, how to get into ‘TAFE’, and accessing accommodation and scholarships etc. The program for the sessions is outlined on the students’ year planner. Overall, the strategy is to run these sessions as the information becomes available (e.g. scholarship information and TISC application procedures generally come to us late in July or early in August). I will be setting aside time in weeks 8 and 9 (September 3 – 14) next term to meet with parents/carers – and students – who want to discuss options available for 2019 and beyond.

Please feel free to ring me on 90719 555, or email [email protected] if you have any questions.

P&C CONTACT Helen Staer

Vice President ESHS P&C M: 0478 213 232

Our last P&C Meeting was jam packed with lots of super useful discussion and indulgent food! We were also totally impressed with our guest speaker, Gareth Postans who is our Student Services Coordinator, and what he spoke about. Gareth shared with us lots of information about the student support

systems we have in our school. A few stand out things were: - it is a whole school approach resulting in a myriad of ways

students are supported and encouraged. Classroom teachers, Heads of Learning Areas, Administration staff (Principal, Deputies) together with the large Student Services team are all working together to support our students.

- A huge amount of extra support is given wherever it is needed. There are so many different programs for groups and assistance and support for individuals.

- “Consequences” are all structured around providing opportunities for calming down, understanding, thoughtfulness, resolutions, and ultimately learning life skills in making good decisions. We learnt about how the school records and shares data, using the “Student Central” database, to keep track of how each individual student is going, so that EVERY student is cared for, followed up, supported, encouraged and rewarded. Wow, what an awesome system and what amazing, caring staff we have! Helen Staer, for the P&C

Last meeting had 13 parents/carers attend.

More people attending would be great!

We are a friendly, welcoming group. Please come to our next P&C meeting!

SCHOOL BOARD REPORT Term 2 Week 8

The School Board last met on Wednesday 20th June. We had a productive time together. We were updated on school Finances by Robin Davis our skilled Manager Corporate Services and general progress and events around the school by our dedicated Principal. We endorsed the Subject Fees for 2019 and spent some time discussing Strategic Directions for the School’s 2019-2021 Business Plan. This year we have a new School Board Chair, Tracey Karger, so we would like to introduce her to you: Tracey Karger “I have been on the School Board for the past two years as a parent member and I have also been involved in the P&C for the past four years. “My whole life I have lived in this beautiful town I call home. I have been lucky enough to have been involved in a family business for the past 25 years and hopefully furthermore. I have been blessed with a wonderful husband and two beautiful children, who are currently studying at ESHS. “The School Board operates within clear and transparent policies and procedures and board members have formed respectful partnerships within the school and the community. I have enjoyed being part of a great working and productive team and look forward to continually working for the benefit of ESHS.” Our next Board meeting will be on Wednesday 8th August. All the best ESHS at Country Week! And we wish all staff and students a lovely holiday. Helen Staer for the School Board (Publicity Officer)
