Aloha Students, Parents, Staff and Community Members, With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I encourage all of us to take a moment to reflect and be thankful for all that we have. As a school community, we are very grateful for the tremendous community support provided to our school and PTSA. This outpouring of generosity truly reflects the importance and value we give to educating our keiki. We hope you all had an opportunity to view the Aloha Angels vimeo (https://vimeo.com/299803518) posted on our school website. Through generous island donors, Aloha Angels continues to fund after school clubs for our students. Additionally, we are extremely appreciative of the following for their contributions to Kilauea School and PTSA: Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg for supporting Mr. Cary Valentine’s Music residency and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) integration; an anonymous donor’s support of Mr. Jeremy Brown’s Music program; Kilauea Bakery for showcasing our student and staff artwork as well as donating student of the week rewards and the hosting the Books for Reading program; Frank & Sherry Magdlen for new Library books; Steve Colon/Hunt Development Group and Judith Draizin for enrichment education; Kauai Eco Design for an air conditioner for an approved classroom; Emerald Isle Properties, North Shore Pharmacy, North Shore Lions’ Club and Five Star Ocho Candy for their contributions toward the Happy, Healthy, Halloween goody bags. Congratulations to the Kilauea School Robotics Kids and Maureen Chung who participated in this Kauai First Lego League Robotics Competition at Island School this past Saturday! We are very proud of the Kilauea School Robotics team who had the highest score and came in first place in the Robotics Competition Match and received the "2018 Kauai District Tournament Into Orbit Robot Performance Award" for this category. Awesome!!!! Congratulations to Kapa`a Elementary Dolphins, Kalaheo Space Invaders and Hanalei Pixel Bots who are invited to attend the state competition on Oahu. Kilauea School and Eleele Schools are alternates. We are very proud of the wonderful job our Kilauea Robotics Kids did at this competition! A huge Mahalo goes out to students, parents, volunteers and Mrs. Maureen Chung for your hard work and making this possible. We are very proud of all of you! We are excited to share our Spring 2018 Strive HI results. Last school year, 80% of our 3rd grade students were reading at near or above grade level. Our reading proficiency increased 3%, math increased 2% and science increased 21%. We continue to have concerns with attendance as 21% of our students missed 15 or more days of school. Other schools in the complex area were at 12% and state 13%. Please see the STRIVE HI summary enclosed for more information.

Our SCC Community Meeting will take place on Monday, Nov. 26th at 2:30 PM. Participants will be given the opportunity to review and provide input on the Kilauea School Academic Financial Plan. The SCC provides the school stakeholders with the opportunity to exchange ideas concerning how to improve student achievement. The school’s stakeholders include: parents, students, community members, teachers, school staff and the principal. The representatives from each group helps to craft the school's Academic Financial Plan. This plan includes the goals and programs for the school as well as available resources. Mahalo to the current SCC Members which are Jami Sitzler–Chairman/Certificated Representative, Bill Troutman–Community Representative, Bethany Woodward–Parent Representative, Keha Lawhead and Dayton Longley–Student Representatives, Sue Saldana–Classified Representative and Sherry Gonsalves–Principal. The SCC meets in the principal’s office on a monthly basis. Please see the school calendar for upcoming board meetings.

This year we are implementing iStation which is a new online math tutorial program. At the beginning of each month, students take an assessment to measure monthly growth. Based on their progress, the program generates tutorials to address areas of need. Teacher in grades 2-5 recently attended a professional

development session focusing on using the program as a math tutorial and for small group instruction.

Parents and family members are asked to encourage your children in grades 2-6 to continue using Achieve 3000 and iStation over the break. All parents of students in grades K-6 may visit KilaueaSchool.com for additional on-line educational resources for students.

In order to help keep our campus safe, all community and/or parent volunteers need to sign in at the front office and get a visitor’s pass. Please contact Sue Saldana at 652-0923 if you would like to volunteer. You will first need to complete a volunteer request form and get clearance before volunteering in the school. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Our OFF CAMPUS EVACUATION DRILL to the Kilauea Neighborhood center is rescheduled for Thursday, November 29th at 8:30am. Please make sure your child is prepared to walk that morning. Our community contributors in the first grade classes went to the Kilauea Lighthouse and weeded the nene breeding ground. They have also been busy creating beautiful art that’s been on exhibit at the bakery. We are all very thankful for the AITS (Artists In The Classroom) grant that provides Cary Valentine’s music from around the world and Mauli Cook’s creative movement classes. Lots of fun! Mr. Skabo's Fourth grade has just completed their "Natural Disaster" Unit. Great job on your Presentation of Learning using the digital storytelling technology of Voicethread. The presentations were informative and interesting! The class has also created Natural Disaster artwork that will be displayed at kilauea Bakery. All proceeds will be donated to Disaster Relief for Hurricane Michael. Our next unit of discovery will be "Off the Drawing Board-Inventors and Inventions". PTSA is looking for volunteers to help with the BACK TO SCHOOL DANCE on Friday, January 25th from 6-8pm and the Book Fair during Parent/Teacher Conferences January 22nd-25th. If you are willing to help and/or would like to be part of the planning for the dance, please call Bethany Woodward @ 634-2536.

CHECKED OUT THE ARTWORK AT THE KILAUEA BAKERY LATELY? Thanks to the coordination of Scott Schwemmer, the Kilauea Bakery has been showcasing Kilauea student and staff artwork for sale the months of October and November. This has helped to raise over $600 so far for art supplies and instruction for the students. Customers were requesting to buy prints of students' artwork so the Student Council is taking over the project of printing, bundling, packaging, and selling postcard prints at the bakery and other community businesses throughout the year. The Mail Service Center in

Princeville and the Rotary are graciously paying for printing. Mahalo to them all!

Mark your calendars now for the two public performances, March 8 & 9, 2018, at 6:00 pm in the school cafeteria. Tickets will be $10 for adults, $5 for students, and any student of Kilauea School will receive a free ticket to be used with one paying adult. If anyone would like to contribute to the Kilauea School Performing Arts Program as a SPONSOR or private DONOR, please contact Mrs. Farrah Krovoza at 652-8296. All monies donated will be used for advertising, costumes, sets, and props, and we will put your name or the name of your business in our program. We operate on a very small budget, so any amount donated would be very helpful! Checks may be made out to Kilauea School PTSA and noted “For Drama Club” in the memo line. Also, if anyone would like to assist with building sets, making costumes, or any other production jobs,

TIPS FOR PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF GERMS

Reinforce the use of proper cough and sneeze etiquette

Encourage children to wash their hands with soap and water regularly & to drink lots of water

Be mindful to avoid being around sick people and keep your child at home if they are sick.

One of the easiest and most effective ways to help prevent the spread of flu is to kill the germs that can live on commonly touched hard surfaces for up to 48 hours. Clean well shared surfaces like tables, doorknobs, phones and television remotes frequently.
