Nowra High School ‐ It’s News To Me National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Day of Celebration (NAIDOC) assembly “Voice, treaty, truth” was the theme of our annual NAIDOC celebration assembly held today. I was proud to welcome our special guests; Ms Pauline Brown, Director of Aboriginal Health and Dr Paul Saunders, Project Manager – Aboriginal Healthy Hearts. Their talks gave our staff and students some personal and professional insight into the role these three important issues play for our Aboriginal families on a daily basis. As a man from a non-Aboriginal background I feel so impressed by those of our students who are learning to use their own voice to speak up against discrimination, listen to the truths told by their elders and work towards a treaty for their people, and it is my pleasure to be in a position to support them on these journeys in every way I can. Through working collaboratively with our Aboriginal Education Officer (AEO) Mrs Sharon Webster and our local branch of the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) I endeavour daily towards achieving this goal. Winter holidays It is difficult to believe but we have arrived at the middle of the 2019 school year. It is a great time to stop for a rest, and thank my amazing teaching and support staff for all of the hard work they do to assist our students and each other. I hope you all enjoy a hard-earned rest. Term 3 will begin with a staff development day focused on the multicultural identity of our school. Staff will be immersed in information about the many rich cultures we are lucky enough to support, and strategies to expand inclusivity and utilise our students’ cultural knowledge to enhance the learning of their classmates. All students will return to school on Tuesday 23 rd July. Senior study With the trial HSC exams arriving shortly into next term our Year 12 students will be studying hard over the holidays. Please encourage them to take a balanced approach by planning their time on a calendar and diary, ensuring rest, exercise and drink breaks are slotted into an even spread of time over their subject load. Although this sounds like simple logic, time management is a skill some adults are still learning and we want to ensure that everyone gets through their HSC with maximum learning and enjoyment. Shoalhaven readers and writers festival Our school has been fortunate to receive the gift of an author talk for year 7 and 8 students from renowned local author Jack Heath. There are quite a few members of our student body quietly producing amazing quality writing already. I hope they find this opportunity inspirational. Please read the details of all of the planned events for the festival throughout this edition of the newsletter. Welcome Captains and SRC 2019 / 2020 Elections have been held, votes counted and we have another strong group of students representatives for Nowra High school this year. I am looking forward to working closely with captains Jessica O’Donnell and Patrick Kerrigan, Vice captains Noah Martin and Taylah Beard, prefects Isabella Manwaring and Tori-Lea Featon as well as the Student Representative Council (SRC) into the new year. Parent-teacher interviews On Thursday 25th July students from years 8,9 and 10 will have parent-teacher interviews.
