St Thomas More Catholic Primary School The Vine 8th February 2018 Issue 1 Principals Report This week we highlight our School Prayer: Heavenly Father, I offer you today, all my thoughts, my work and play. And loving Jesus in every way. Amen Dear Parents, Welcome back to another school year filled with many great possibilities and potentials. It was wonderful to see all the children so happy and enthusiastic about being back at school. Im sure parents are also all smiles at the moment too. A special welcome to all the new families, the Achmads, Berrys, Boparis, Chiltons, Guerinis, and the Drysdales who have joined our school community this year. I would also like to extend a special welcome to Mrs Nicolle Achmad, who is our new Assistant Principal. I am sure that you will all be welcomed into our St Thomas More Community. We look forward to working together with all our parents as we journey together in the education of your children. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and that you managed some sort of a break and relaxation over the holiday period. The staff are delighted with the attitude that your children have returned to school with, and with the way that they are working. On behalf of the staff I would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents for providing their children with the materials they require in their classrooms each day. We encourage regular parental contact with teachers, especially if you have any queries or concerns. These are always best dealt with before any major difficulties arise. Teachers will also be sending home written information regarding classroom routines and requirements in the near future. If parents do have any concerns with the school, please make an appointment to come and see me. It is very difficult for me to address concerns that I know nothing about. I welcome input and feedback from our school community and am more than happy to make time for our community members should they wish to speak with me. I like to think that my door is always open, and I welcome the opportunity to speak with our parents and students. As a staff we have given a lot of thought with regards to the best way to give and get important Beginning of Yearinformation to and from parents. We thought we would try something new, and a little bit different this year. All classes will send home (or have sent home) a Parent Information Pack”, giving you all the information that they believe you will need with regard to your childs class this year. We encourage parents to take the time to read this carefully as it will contain the information that teachers believe you will need to help you and your child this year. Should you have specific questions with regard to the information sent home, or any other general queries, please approach teachers directly at a time that works for you. Alternatively, if you believe that there is important information that the teacher needs from you with regard to your child, please make an appointment with the teacher. Teachers will happily meet with parents who wish to do so. If teachers would like to speak with parents specifically, they will make their own arrangements. As part of this process, we would like to invite all members of our school community to a WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL SUNDOWNER, next Friday afternoon behind the school canteen, from 4:00 - 7:00pm. Staff will be available to socialise and speak with parents about the year ahead in a relaxed atmosphere. We believe that this will enhance the partnership and build strong relationships between home and school as we work together with all families here at St Thomas More. You should have received a flyer with all the information with regard to the Sundowner by now and it has been placed on the P&F Facebook page. I look forward to seeing many of you at our Welcome Back Sundowner next week. Continued on Page 3 …………. Heavenly Father,

Classroom News

KINDY: Hi everyone! What a fabulous start for our Kindy Family. The kids are settling in beautifully and are learning our routines very quickly. They are also demonstrating all the ways they can let their light shine by sharing, using kinds words and listening carefully. Please ensure your child has a hat every day. Thank you for the fabulous range of delicious fruit coming in for fruit time each day. Have a wonderful week! Mrs Wolf, Mrs Q, Mrs Cummins and the amazing Kindy Kids xx PRE-PRIMARY: Hello and welcome to Pre-Primary 2018! We have had a wonderful start to the term and the students are beginning to become familiar with our room and routines. This week in PP we are learning sounds for the letters s, a, t and p. This means we have been playing with stickers and stamps, apples and ants, textas, play dough, pop sticks and pompoms to reinforce the learning. In Maths we are working on numbers 1-5 and how to sort and make groups. Apart from this we have been to Music, Library, Art, Sport and IT! So busy!! Today we are sending home the PP Parent Information Pack – if you didn’t receive yours please come and see us. Have a great week. Mrs Ross, Mrs Hassall, Mrs Q and the PP’s.

YEAR 1: Hello and welcome to Year One! I hope you are all as excited as I am for the year ahead. This week we have been easing in to the Year 1 routine like super stars. The kids are already naturals! We kick started on our spelling, revising some of our sounds from last year. The students have been doing daily recount writing, creating simple sentences about things that have happened the day before. In Maths we have been revising quantities between one and ten. This week the kids met my friend Bounce Back Bear, he will be helping us this term to become resilient kids. If you have anything you want to see me about in regards to the Parent Information Packs please don’t hesitate to come and ask. I hope you all have a great weekend. Miss Halse and the Wonderful One’s.

YEAR 2: We have had a wonderful start to the year, with the children settling in nicely and working very hard. An Information Booklet will come home shortly with everything you need to know about Year 2 life. For now, please note that Library is on Mondays and Sport is on Thursdays. Mrs Chapman, Mrs Newman, Mrs Russell and Year 2. YEAR 3: It has been a wonderful week of settling into our new classroom and getting to know each other. The students are presenting their interesting and diverse ‘All About Me’ bags. From origami cranes to cat fur, it has been super interesting and entertaining to see all the wonderful things the students have chosen to share. We have revised the elements of a narrative and explored the importance of characterisation. The 3s created wonderful characters of their own and wrote about their inside (personality) and outside (physical) traits. Our current Maths focus is place value and three digit numbers. We are writing numbers in expanded form and have learnt that greater than and less than comparison symbols are like hungry crocodiles - always chomping the biggest number! Please return Facebook notes as soon as possible. Happy days! Miss Wright, Mrs Hewson and the Fantastic 3s. YEAR 4: Hi all. Welcome to Year 4! We have had a great start to the term and have enjoyed meeting the students and getting to know them all. Mr McRae will be teaching Year 4 on Monday, Tuesday and from 10.00am on Fridays whilst Mrs Achmad will be teaching them on Wednesday and Thursday. An Information Booklet will be sent home next week detailing all aspects of the Year 4 classroom. Parents will have the opportunity to meet with teachers next Friday at our school sundowner to discuss this and ask any questions to teachers. One reminder –sports uniform for Year 4 is to be worn on Thursday and Friday. Mr McRae, Mrs Achmad and the Awesome Foursomes. YEAR 5: What an amazing start to the year! The Year 5 students have encouraged, enthused and challenged me over the last five days, and I look forward to the coming weeks this term. A Parent Information package will be sent home next week, that will hopefully cover some of the questions and queries that have been raised. Once this package has been received, I am very happy to meet with parents to discuss any issues or questions. Please remember to join our Year 5 Facebook Page! Thanks! Mr O’Brien and the Year 5 Class. YEAR 6: Hello and Welcome to Year 6! What a wonderful week and a half we have had. We have been learning about the 3 important structures to well-constructed hamburger sentences, having homophone shootouts and inferring to determine perspective! We have also explored equivalent fractions, decimals and place value to thousandths. The Parent Information Booklet will be sent home at the end of Week 3. I am really looking forward to meeting you and working with you to make Year 6 the best year ever!

Mrs Teague and the Sensational Sixes.

Thought of the Week

Principal’s Report ……...continued from Page 1 Bishop Holohan will be visiting the parish to say Mass this weekend of Saturday and Sunday 10

th and 11

th of

February. The Commissioning Mass for the staff at STMCPS will be held as part of the Sunday morning mass THIS Sunday at 10:00am. I would like to invite all of our school community to join us at Mass on Sunday 11

th February.

The school leadership team, and classroom teaching staff will be working with Fr Mars this year to try and continue to develop and foster the positive parish/school relationship with Fr Mars taking an active role in our school and classrooms. Lenten Season: The season of Lent commences this Wednesday February 14, Ash Wednesday. There will be a school mass celebrated at 9:00am. All parents are most welcome to join us. We look forward to seeing many of our school and parish community at the Ash Wednesday Mass. Ash Wednesday is a parish ritual that is practiced to symbolise the beginning of a holy season, a time for reflection and renewal. During this mass, a sign of the cross is traced on our foreheads with ashes made from last year’s palms. Palms being changed into ashes are an apt sign for the meaning of Lent. It is time to look at the habits, attitudes, and behaviours of our lives that may need to be changed. At the same time, we take steps to enhance the positive things we are doing. God calls us to be new creations, to let go of our old selves and put on the new. Lent gives us the spiritual opportunity to change; ashes remind us of this.
