Term 4, Week 3
Tuesday
29th October,
2019
Student of the Week
Week 2 Term 4
Kindergarten Transition
It was great to see so many excited faces at the first transition for our new 2020 Kindergarten
students and their families. There was a lot of information, which probably meant that a few of
our new families left a little confused (and probably made our returning parents nod off), but the
children had lots of fun making their elephant pictures and meeting the teachers. The next
session will be on 14th November and then the final session will include a Teddy Bear’s picnic on
28th November.
If you or someone you know has a child who will be starting Kindergarten next year and they
haven’t already been to see us please remind them to come in. They can still be part of this early
taste of ‘big school’ in preparation for 2020.
Disco
I had a fantastic time at the disco last Thursday night and it was really satisfying to see the
children having a dance and enjoying themselves. Thanks to our teachers for giving their time to
make the night happen. We have lots of other events to look forward to before the end of the
year.
Absences
Sometimes your child’s teacher, or Mr Carlin who is our Assistant Principal with responsibility for
student attendance, will contact you for an explanation as to why your child is away or has been
away. Our teachers are compelled to do this as part of their job. I would like to take the
opportunity to explain a couple of points from the law and the NSW Department of Education’s
policy around student attendance.
Children are to attend school on any day that the school is open for instruction unless they
are sick. This includes days when the school is operating from a different place, such as
athletics and swimming carnivals.
Parents/carers are required, by law, to explain absences within seven days of the absence
taking place.
Sometimes families take holidays during the school term. While this is sometimes
unavoidable it is not classed as a satisfactory reason for absence. Some families could also
be eligible for an extended leave application to explain their family holidays – please see
the ladies in the office for more detailed information regarding this .
Teachers must contact parents on the third day of unexplained absences.
Mr Carlin must monitor student attendance as part of his AP duties and bring attendance
concerns to my attention.
I meet with the Home School Liaison Officer each term to discuss concerns. Generally if
a child’s attendance drops below 90% we will discuss their situation and the HSLO may
get in touch with families to offer support.

My boss, the Director Educational Leadership, meets with me once a term and student attendance is a topic that we
speak about.
It is really important that we are all doing our job so that children get the most from their years at school.
Drought Relief Food Drive
Our wonderful School Learning Support Officer, Mrs Nash, is collecting items for distribution to drought ravaged
communities. Please see the flyer in the newsletter for ideas on how you can help. There is a box in the school foyer for
your donations to this worthy cause.
P&C Annual General Meeting
The next P&C meeting will include the AGM. Further details can be found in the P&C report. We welcome everyone to these
meetings and would love to see you there on the night.
I am attending the Primary Principals Association Conference in Sydney this week. Principals from all over the state come
together to listen to the latest information from the Premier, The Education Ministers and our bosses to learn about
successfully leading a school team. I always learn a lot working with my colleagues and I am looking forward to another
opportunity over the next three days.
Have a great week everyone.

week.
We would like to invite our Aboriginal families, parents, carers and the
community to discuss the installation of our NAIDOC rock garden and future
events. The meeting will take place this Friday (25th October) in 5/6E at
8:15am. We look forward to seeing you there.
2020 Year 7 Aboriginal Students Transition Day
Cardiff High School would like to invite Year 6 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to attend Year 7 2020 Cultural Transition Day. The activities involve Aboriginal dancing, mentoring sessions, art and a game of touch football with current Year 7 Aboriginal students.

Families are also invited to attend a barbeque meet and greet on the day at 1pm. There will be a short information session regarding support networks and cultural programs currently running at Cardiff High School.

It’s that time of year again where we need to gather in the perpetual trophies awarded at last year’s

soon as possible so we can begin preparations for this year’s Presentation Day. Thank you.

Uniform Shop Volunteers
As most of you know, we have been lucky enough to have a team of dedicated volunteers in
the Uniform Shop over the last few years. These volunteers have meant that we can keep
uniform sales within the school and keep uniform costs to a minimum.
Next year, we will be needing a Uniform Shop Co-Ordinator. This role requires you to
oversee stock levels and order more uniform when required. Unfortunately, if we can’t find
a Co-Ordinator, we will have no choice but to outsource our Uniform Shop sales. This will
increase the cost of our uniforms significantly.
We are also in need of volunteers to help in the Uniform Shop every Wednesday Morning from 8:45am to approx.
9:20am. If you could spare some time on a weekly, fortnightly, or monthly basis, we’d love you to come along.
If you think you could be interested in our Uniform Shop Co-Ordinator role, or with volunteering regularly, please
email [email protected] for more details.
Christmas Raffle
We will once again, be holding a Christmas Raffle. Our members are currently finalising all the details and getting our
tickets printed. These should be sent home with the eldest child in each family over the coming weeks. Good Luck to
everyone that buys a ticket.
Christmas Carols
Christmas Carols will be held on Friday 29th November.
P&C AGM
Parents and Carers are advised that the P&C Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 20th November at
7pm in the library. At this meeting all officer and other positions become vacant and will be filled by nomination and,
where necessary, by a ballot of members. To be eligible to nominate and vote for positions, you must be a current
financial member of the Cardiff South P&C. The positions declared vacant include: President, 2 Vice‐presidents,
Secretary and Treasurer. Any members who are unable to attend the AGM but who wish to be considered for a
specific role should send an apology to the Secretary (prior to the meeting) and detail their willingness to stand. The
P&C would sincerely welcome any new families interested in joining the P&C, but please be advised that new
members are not eligible to stand for positions or vote in the AGM.
We hope you can make it.
