School Production – RHS Factor

This year’s Production was a variety show

designed to showcase the talents of our

students. It certainly achieved that aim

with students shining as actors, dancers,

musician and singers.

I was lucky enough to see the matinee

with many primary school students and

they loved it! The evening performance

was equally well received by a very sup-

portive audience mainly made up of family

and friends.

It is great to see students from all year

levels getting involved, bravely stepping

into the spotlight and then performing so

well. I am sure you will see much more of

some of the performers in future years.

Special thanks to Peter and Meagan Scott

who put the show together with the support of other volunteer staff mem-

bers. Peter Harris, an ex-student, provided a lot of the technical equipment

and then operated it as a volunteer. Likewise, parent Brendan Smith was

instrumental in setting up and running the lights etc. Productions simply

cannot happen without support and commitment from a range of people so

thank you all.

School Based Apprentice/Trainee of the

Year

Dan Martin recently attended the GTES

Apprentice and Trainee of the Year

Awards for 2013. He was announced as

one of the three finalists and then was

announced as the Winner of his category!

The nomination read: “Hosted with Bor-

der Express, Dan has been an eager learn-

er since starting his apprenticeship in

March 2013. Dan has proven his commit-

ment to his trade and host employer by

attending work one day per week, TAFE

one day and school the rest of the time.

Dan has a great work ethic, he takes pride

in his work and listens well to instruction.”

Congratulations Dan! I also thank the

many businesses who take our students

for Work Experience, Work Placements as

well as School Based Apprenticeships and

Traineeships. For many students, this ex-

perience in the ‘real world’ is a very valua-

ble part of their education.

Subject Selections

This Term we have held Information Eve-

nings for students going into Year 11 and

12. All students have had individual coun-

selling sessions to ensure their selections

match the preferred pathway. Students

have submitted their selections and we

are working through the blocking process.

On Wednesday 11th September we will be

running an Information Evening starting at

7:00 pm for students going into Year 10 in

2014.

Independent literacy consultant, free-lance speaker and writer on film and English curriculum designer. Literacy Consultant - Department of Education and Early Childhood Learn-ing, Victoria, Australia. Gary works in schools throughout Victoria on request, usually supporting the teaching of screen texts at Years 11-12. This term he has also presented at the Methodist Ladies College (MLC) in Kew. On Friday the 23rd of August Ruther-glen High was fortunate to have Gary Simmons present to all VCE students on the films ‘On the Waterfront’ and ‘Skin’. Gary has worked as the education programmer at The Australian Centre for the Moving Image for 9 years. In this role he was responsible for devel-oping and delivering both screen-based lecture and workshop programs for students from primary to tertiary levels and professional development for English, Literature and Media teachers. In that period he spoke to 50, 000 students and 2.000 teachers in the context of lectures and workshops. Gary has extensive experience in work-ing with teachers and students over many years and his key role at ACMI was to critically explore the mandated screen texts in detail at Year 12 and encourage teachers to introduce new screen-based texts in Years 7-11. He has introduced ways into film, games and television providing a framework for teachers and students to under-stand the language of screen-based texts and the ways in which this lan-guage opens up meanings. Gary was received enthusiastically by VCE English students who attended the lecture in preparation for their end-of-year exams.

ABC RADIO

VISITS

RUTHERGLEN HIGH SCHOOL

On the 27th August ABC radio pre-

senter Warwick Long visited Ruth-

erglen High School to have a look

at the Agriculture Program and the Farm to Table sub-

ject that is part of the 9Alive Program.

Warwick interviewed Mr Webb about the Agriculture

Program at the High School. In particular the focus was

on some of the processes that occur to get the steers and

heifers ready (feeding, brushing, leading, washing). Mr

Webb also spoke about the Welsh Black Society and the

fact that they as well as others (Leon Martin Le Martres

Stud, Rowley Bennett Fernhill Angus Stud, Peter Man-

gels Riverview Belgian Blue Stud) donate steers and

heifers that we will show this year in the Carcase Com-

petition.

Mr Webb also spoke about the about the enterprises of

the VCE Agricultural students which include students

breeding chickens, running steers and lambs, growing

vegetables and growing crops.

Warwick also interviewed two students from Year Nine

about the Steer Handling experience. These students

(Georgia Lowe and Harry Taylor) provided an insight

into their feelings about steer handling and what they

have learnt about the feeding, grooming and leading

process.

Year 7 Text Studies

Performance

Last week, our text group with

Mrs Nancarrow performed

scenes from the book we were

reading, “Goodnight Mister

Tom”.

The book was about a little

boy called Willie. Willie was an

evacuee from London in World

War II, who was moved to the

country to stay with an elderly

man called Tom. It is a story

about Willie’s life in the coun-

try and the strong, growing

bond between Willie and Tom.

To perform our scenes we split

into small groups. Each group

had a different scene; every-

one made a script and learnt

their lines. We all dressed up

according to our characters

and included props to match

our scenes. It was a bit nerve-

racking performing in front of

the rest of the Year Sevens,

but I think everyone did very

well.

Brett Murray.

What is bullying? Why do people bully others? Why do some people allow themselves to be bullied? These were some of the questions asked of our Yr7, 8 and 9 students last week by visiting guest speaker Brett Murray. Brett is a nationally recognised, Youth Motivational Speaker who has a passion for campaigning against bullying. More importantly, however, Brett advocates that your past is your past and simply that – not your future. Coming from a background of adversity himself, Brett spoke of how important it is to have dreams and ambitions and to not let others dictate the direction of your life. Many students spoke of how powerful they found this event. Hopefully Brett will inspire some of them to achieve goals they may otherwise not have met.

The R.H.S. ‘Bake Off’

Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students were

given the chance to show off their skills last

week in the ‘Rutherglen High School Bake

Off’.

The Bake Off ran from Wednesday 28th August

to Friday 30th August. The students were giv-

en five periods to bake any cake of their

choice, decorate the cake and present the

cake ready for judging.

The ‘Bake Off’ started very well with most cakes baked dur-

ing the allocated time of one double period. When it came

to the decorating stage, the students soon realised the

time, precision and effort it takes to decorate a cake. In the

end, all students assembled their masterpieces ready for

the anonymous judging panel. All cakes looked fantastic

and presented really well. The final score resulted in 1st

place to Alex Cooke and Rhiannon Wills. The creative duo

created a white chocolate strawberry swirl mud cake cov-

ered in white chocolate & strawberry ganache, topped off

with fresh strawberries. In a tie for 2nd place we had Emma

Krautz and Taylah Wagner with a seven-layered rainbow

cake minion paradise cake; and Emma Mitchell and Eliza-

beth Argent with a four-layered rainbow cake, filled with

cream and a blue lagoon icing. All the Hospitality students

worked really to complete the Bake Off in the time allocat-

ed, and produced some outstanding results.

The Archibald

Prize for portraiture is one of Australia’s oldest and most pres-

tigious art prizes. Each year, thousands of artists from around

Australia enter in the hopes of winning fame, accolades (and

the $75,000 prize money!). The subject of the portrait must be

someone who is distinguished in the arts, letters, science or

politics.

Year 11 Art students have been studying the history of the Arch-

ibald Prize as well as produc-

ing their own portrait entry

in the ‘Rutherglen High

School RArchibald Prize’. Students had to choose as their sub-

ject, a person who has been significant or influential in their

own lives. As with the real prize, they had to work from real life

as well as from photographs. Students used a variety of materi-

als such as pencil, charcoal, pastels, oil pastels, watercolours

and acrylics.

In keeping with tradition, there was much controversy and

spirited debate over the merits of each work! Although not

unanimous, the judges were able to finally reach a decision.

Congratulations to all of the Year 11 Art students on their efforts

and thank you to our judges and to everyone who voted.

‘Cows Create Careers’ Again

Once again students at Rutherglen High

School are taking part in the ‘Cows

Create Careers’ program which is run

by Dairy Australia as part of a promo-

tion of Dairy Farming as a possible

career path.

The projects involve four teams of four

completing various tasks in relation to

calves which will be housed at the

school for a two week period. These

teams will then complete a variety of

tasks including a scientific report, let-

ters, posters and a short movie.

The teams will consist of eight students

(two teams) from Year Seven and eight

students (two teams) from Year Nine.

As part of their role, these students will

feed the calves, clean out the areas and

weigh the calves each day. This infor-

mation will be recorded each day and

will become part of the data which will

be included in the Scientific report.

This year there are eight other North-

east Victorian schools including Coro-

wa High School, Wangaratta Galen

Secondary College, Tallangatta Sec-

ondary College, Murray High School,

Corryong College, Frayne College and

Batlow Technology School.

Once the calves have left, work will be

submitted as part of the competition

and there will be an awards ceremony

in Wodonga which students will attend.

So stay tuned as an update will be pro-

vided in the next RHS Newsletter.

Thank You Charlie!

A big thank you to Charlie Bruce and

Pam who donated some gear to the

school after listening to the Ruther-

glen High School feature story on

ABC radio.

Charlie presented the gear to the Year

Nine Steer Handling Team and stayed

and shared his experiences on his life

in the Show Ring. Charlie explained

that he showed Poll Herefords and

showed the students a photo of himself

in the ring at the Royal Sydney Show

in the 1960’s.

He also stayed around to talk to the

students about steer handling and was

impressed with the Farm facilities and

the Year Nine Program in general

(Community Service).

For the record, Charlie not only iden-

tified the Belgian Blue but also felt

that the Belgian Blue was in the best

condition of the steers and heifers and

he also liked the Welsh Black heifer

(No 22).

Thanks Charlie for the equipment you

have donated – it is greatly appreciat-

ed by the students and Rutherglen

High School.

The photo above shows Charlie and

Pam with the equipment and some of

the Steer Handling Team.
