Dress for Success at School Our weather continues to be unpredictable. Please be sure your child has the appropriate clothing to stay warm and dry when our days are cool and rainy. Inside days are only designated when it is raining really hard, so warm clothing and rain gear is required for days of light rain. As the temperature rises and summer clothes come out for the season, please help your child to make wise choices. We ask that students, staff and parents respect our learning and working environment by dressing appropriately. Tops should cover any underclothing and bottoms should reach to the mid-thigh or knee. Logos and slogans are acceptable if they are positive and child-appropriate.

The Kitchener Growth Plan

While we attend to many curricular and developmental areas, our school plan allows us to focus on specific areas. The staff develops school goals with input from our school planning council. This year’s school goals are: Literacy: Improve performance in reading comprehension for all students K – 7 Social Responsibility: Self-Regulation and Self-Empowerment

Literacy @ Home If your child is trying to read a long or tricky word, give your child time and ask questions like these: 1. Look at the picture, what can you see that might start with that letter? 2. Look at the picture, what word makes sense? 3. What letter does it start with? What sound does the letter make? What letter does it end with? Book talk is an important part of reading. Chat about the book before, during and after reading and really encourage your child to talk about their ideas and ask questions about the book.

Social Responsibility @ Home - Social emotional development: 1. Read storybooks on topics that address friendships and social interaction and discuss the social components of successful interactions with others. 2. Identify areas of social difficulty exhibited by your child and role-play how to handle situations requiring such skills. 3. Discuss situations that occur in everyday life, such as a conversation with a supermarket cashier, or the dialogue, facial expressions, and body language between two actors on a television program. 4. When watching a movie or television show, point out subtle social cues, such as non-verbal behaviours and various social situations, that may be unfamiliar or complex, and discuss them with your child.
