Respect ~ Perseverance ~ Growth Principal Matters by Mark Watson Return to Face-to-Face Lessons Next Week Organisation We are all very excited about the return of students to school for face-to-face lessons next week. I am sure our students are looking forward to seeing their friends and teachers after 13 weeks of remote learning. We have had to make several significant changes to the school s organisation to meet the Department of Educations (DoE) requirements to keep students in cohorts, stagger break times and control the use of common areas. We will run the school with five different cohorts: Years 7 and 8 Years 9 and 10 Year 11 Year 12 The IEC The playground will be divided with a designated area for each cohort. Lessons will run for 55 minutes on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; and for 45 minutes on Tuesday. Co- horts will follow their own bell times, Year 11 will begin their day at 8:55am, Years 9 and 10 at 9:05am and Years 7 and 8 at 9:10am. Year 11’s day will end at 2:10pm on Tuesday and 3:00pm every other day. Years 9 and 10’s day will end at 2:20pm on Tuesday and 3:10pm eve- ry other day. Years 7 and 8’s day will end at 2:25pm on Tuesday and 3:15pm every other day. There will be a 20-minute break after lessons 1, 2 and 4 and a 30-minute lunch break after peri- od 3. The canteen will provide a lunch service only and orders can be placed via flexi-schools. (See later in the newsletter for further information). Lunches will be delivered to student desig- nated areas, see map. The staggered lesson times will allow students to move in cohorts and avoid contact with other cohorts. The staggered times will allow Year 11 to use the same toilet block as Years 7 and 8 with a clean in between cohorts. IEC students will run to their own bell times, they will use the playground near their demountables and use their own toilet block. Wet Weather Arrangements If we have a wet day, Year 11 will have marquees on their section of the playground and access to the old PE staff room. Years 9 and 10 will use the Gym. Years 7 and 8 will use the hall during weeks 4, 5, 10 and 11. During weeks 6 to 9, the hall will be in use for the HSC, so we will have a marquee on the quad for Years 7 and 8 in case we have wet weather. Masks Advice from the DoE has been changing in recent weeks. Current advice from the DoE is that students and staff are required to wear a mask while indoors except when eating or exercising. Parents of students who refuse to wear a mask indoors will be contacted and asked to collect their child from school. We would also encourage Students to wear their mask when outdoors as this will further protect them and others. Students should bring their own mask to school, however, we have limited supplies of masks in case a student forgets to bring one to school. Information Package A comprehensive information package has been emailed home to parents and students detailing the arrangements for next week. It includes tables of bell times, information about the breaks during the day, where students should go when they arrive at school, lunch orders and end of day organisation. I would like to thank our team of Deputies for all of their work in putting these arrangements in place and developing the information package. DoE Information If students attend school when they are sick, parents will be contacted and asked to collect their child from school. The child will need to have a negative COVID test result before they can return to school. Term 4 Week 3 22 October 2021

Return to School Webinar On Thursday evening this week, a webinar was held for parents and students covering students returning to school next week. The meeting was an initiative of the school’s wellbeing team. Over 160 participants joined the zoom. The organisation for students returning, outlined above, was presented to the meeting. The results of our most recent student survey were shared with parents by Ms Paterson. Parents also heard from our newly appointed Student Support Officer Ms Viapiana and school counsellor, Mrs Druce Ventilation The DoE has calculated the number of students that it is safe to have in classrooms. These calculations are based on the amount of air flow in the room. The calculations were based on the number and size of windows allowing air to flow into the room. At the same time an audit was conducted of windows that did not open and a number of these were adjusted this week so that necessary air flow can be achieved. Public Transport School bus services will run and carry a greater number of students than public services as occurred after the lock down last year. Students will not be in their separate cohorts when travelling to school. They will need to take greater precautions, they should wear masks, use hand sanitiser and not eat on the bus. They should avoid putting their hands and fingers in their mouths or rubbing their eyes and nose. In the afternoon we will do our best to load the buses by cohort. This will not always be possible, especially on routes where there is only one bus. Where possible, parents may prefer to drive their children to and from school. Please note that Council has created 2 new Kiss & Drop zones, one on Yarrabung Rd and the other on Horace St. Please be mindful of the road rules when using these areas. Trivia Thank You A big thank you to Mr Williamson who has been running a staff and student trivia session every week during online learning. Questions tested everyone’s knowledge of the school from home. It added some relief as we faced another week of zooms. Wellbeing Team Thank You A big thank you also to Ms Paterson and the wellbeing team who have put numerous measures in place to keep stu-dents connected to the school during online learning. A big plank in the plan was student surveys. The final online survey was conducted this week, and this will give us a detailed insight into student wellbeing during online learning. We are now running pulse surveys to measure student wellbeing as we return to school. These will give us a better understanding of our students’ learning and wellbeing during this difficult time. P&C AGM I would like to draw your attention to the P&C AGM on Thursday the 4

th of November. There are details about the

meeting elsewhere in this newsletter. At the AGM, office bearers for the next school year are elected. There are 5 office bearer positions that will become vacant at the meeting, and at this stage, there is only 1 nominations for Sec-retary. I would like to thank the outgoing committee for the support that has been given to the school. The P&C is a respected and valuable organisation that supports the school in many ways including;

• Operating the uniform shop providing cost effective uniforms for students.

• Funding for school infrastructure projects.

• Applying for grants, big and small, that have allowed us to upgrade the hall, upgrade the school bell system and build the community hub that will be available for our use when students return.

• Running social events and providing resources such as parent contact lists.

• Conducting surveys in partnership with the school to provide feedback leading to improvements in school pro-cedures and policies.

• Fund raising, which benefits all of our students

• A parent voice in the school’s decision-making processes. Feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss the opportunity to be an office bearer. Year 12 HSC Preparations Over the past two weeks, Year 12 have been completing practice HSC papers. At the start of this week, Year 12 students were given greater access to schools, and we took advantage of this by running the practice papers at school under exam conditions. We employed the same exam supervisors who will conduct the actual HSC exams in a couple of weeks. This was a good opportunity to rehearse for the HSC exams before they take place, something we were keen to do given the disruption to their trial exams. Next week, Year 12 students will have the opportunity to be involved in subject specific workshops and receive feedback from the practice exams. We have also made the library available for Year 12 students to study after school until 7pm from Monday through to Thursday this week. This option will be available to Year 12 next week, and beyond as necessary. Years 7 to 10 Assessments Students in Years 7 to 10 have been involved in assessments at the end of last term and the start of this term. Next week, Year 10 will have several assessments. These assessments will allow teachers to evaluate student under-standing after learning from home. They will also form the basis of the upcoming Term 4 reports.

Will you be with us in 2022? Planning is well underway for the 2022 school year. There is a high demand for places in the school and enrolments are strictly limited to students living in our drawing area. It would greatly help with our planning if you could inform the school as early as possible if you do not intend to have your child return in 2022. If you know this and have not informed the school, please contact Mrs Douglas in the office. Knowing this information in advance allows us to have a more accurate number of teachers and classes required for 2022.

Hub Handover When our students arrive back next week, they will discover that the site of the old music box has now been trans-formed into the Community Hub, a facility that will give a permanent home to our band program and a resource available for community hire. This week it was handed over to the school. The project was funded by the P&C who were successful in obtaining a Government Community Grant some years ago. The original grant was for a commu-nity building on the site of the new Gym. A new site had to be found and new plans created, and this delayed con-struction. Many thanks to the P&C and Ali Parsanejad for all their hard work on the project. It is a wonderful space and a valuable addition to the school’s infrastructure.

Year 7 and Year 12 Parent Surveys Every year the school, in partnership with the P&C, conducts two parent surveys. We survey Year 7 parents to eval-uate the experience for parents transitioning to their child to high school. We survey Year 12 parents for their views on the school as their Year 12 child exits school. Both surveys provide us with valuable feedback that we use to ad-just our operation so that it better meets the need of our community. The Year 7 survey is planned to be launched on the 2nd of November and the Year 12 survey launched on the 5th of November. Individual invitations with links to the appropriate survey will be sent to Year 7 and Year 12 parents as an email. Please keep an eye out for the email, we really value your input.

Congratulations This week congratulations to Maya S (Year 9) for being a finalist in the Videos for Change competition. We can all vote for her video in the ‘People’s Choice Award’. Please below for details.

Best wishes

VIDEOS FOR CHANGE FINALIST – YEAR 9 DRAMA

Congratulations to Maya S, for being officially named as a finalist in the Videos for Change competition 2021. Her film ‘Words Leave Scars’ was chosen from hundreds of entries across the nation and is now a finalist in the junior category.

The competitions require students to create a one-minute video on a social issue they feel passionate about. As part of the Year 9 Drama filmmaking unit, Maya chose to explore the impact of cyber bullying on mental health, and her message was one of empathy and kindness.

Please vote for Maya’s video as part of the ‘People’s Choice Award’. You can watch and vote for her fantastic video at: bit.ly/VFCWordsLeaveScars

Voting closes on the October 25th, so please vote soon.

Help us stay ahead of the game with our traffic, transport and pedestrian safety issues…

Our community needs to monitor how transport services are performing to let our service providers know about any issues as they happen. There have been changes to parking restrictions in the Yarrabung Road Schools Precinct, and we want to keep an eye on how drivers respond to these changes.

Use our St Ives High & Primary Traffic and Transport Facebook group as a quick and easy way to report any issues with transport, traffic, or road safety around the St Ives Schools Precinct. We regularly monitor posts to this group and follow them up as necessary.

To celebrate Australian Reading hour (Tuesday 14th September) the SIHS Library ran an extreme reading competi-tion asking students to read for an hour and snap a photo of them reading somewhere extreme over the holidays.

Australia Reads is on a mission to get more people reading more books, more often. We believe reading is the key to a smarter, healthier, happier nation. Research shows that reading books can be a great way to improve your cog-nitive abilities, relax your body and lower your heart rate, and enhance how happy you are with life.

Congratulations to Aeryn. O, Sahil. S and Harry. M the lucky winners of the competition and thank you to all the stu-dents who took the time to participate in Australian Reading Hour or enter the competition. Please come to the li-brary when school returns to collect your prizes.

School Travel for 2022

2022 school travel applications are now open

Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass for 2022 can apply now. A new application will need to be submitted if they are applying for a school travel pass for the first time, or if they are requesting an additional travel entitlement as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation (e.g. joint custody).

Students who change address, school, campus location, or who have repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should renew or update their details before the end of term 4. This will ensure that schools can endorse applications and current entitlements are updated and remain valid. School Opal card holders will have the changes applied to their existing card.

If a student’s distance eligibility has changed based on their grade the system will automatically update their entitlement if they meet the new criteria. If they do not meet the new eligibility criteria, they will receive an expiry notification via email.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition that is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card (including a Term Bus Pass) for the first time will receive their Student Opal card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2022.

Students living in rural and regional (R&R) areas should receive their travel pass at the start of the new school year from their nominated transport operator. It may come via the school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some R&R operators do not issue travel passes. Students/parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.

School Student Transport Scheme site change

On 1 October 2021 the School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) information and application portal was moved to transportnsw.info. This will assist families to find all their travel information in the one place.

Travel from Term 1 2022

We ask that parents plan ahead and make sure their child knows which service/s to use and has a valid ticket to travel; either a School Opal card or Child/Youth Opal card (within Greater Sydney) or a School Travel Pass (outside Greater Sydney), from the start of the school year.

Applications for the School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) open at the start of Term 4 2021 for travel in 2022, so parents/students can apply or update details early and be ready for the start of the new school year.

Most students using the Opal network will not need a new Opal card and can continue travelling on their existing card each year.

The start of the year is a difficult period for local bus operators, and students travelling without a valid ticket make service planning and operations increasingly difficult.

We recognise that for some families last minute changes to school enrolments mean they may not have a School Opal card or Travel Pass for the start of term. In the Opal network, we strongly encourage these families to have their children travel on a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.

Bus operators are flexible and understanding, particularly at the start of the school year, and will ensure students can travel safely to and from school. But to best support our operators we encourage all students to have a valid ticket, as early as possible, from the start of the school year.

Please also remember that students using Opal cards must tap on and tap off in line with the Student code of conduct and Opal terms of use.
