Respect ~ Perseverance ~ Growth Principal Matters by Mark Watson Multicultural Day Last Friday we celebrated Multicultural Day in the traditional St Ives HS way. Students in Years 7 to 11 visited student run cultural rooms, were involved in Irish dancing and listened to inspirational presenta- tions from Mercy Ships – a charity that operates hospital ships in developing nations and Lisa Blair – an Australian who became the first woman to sail solo around Antarctica. This year we had to split the school and run the multicultural day concert twice because we cannot fit the entire school in the hall. As always the food prepared by our parents was delicious and appreciated. Con- gratulations to the students who ran the Greenland cultural room for being the voted the most popular room and congratulations to Dinal J for being voted the most popular item in the concert. This year the staff team won the soccer competition. They kindly decided to donate the prize to the second place Year 12 team. Of course a day like this takes enormous planning and would not happen without the tremendous efforts from the LOTE, ESL and Hearing Support staff. A staff member who was also a student at the school told me on Friday morning that Multicultural Day was the best day on the school calendar. This was the case when they were a student and it is still the case as a teacher. What a tradition! The teachersteam won the soccer competition however, they decided to give their prizes to the Year 12 runners up team. Matilda The Musical Last Saturday the Matilda team reached another significant mile- stone in their preparation for the musical in Term 4 this year. On Saturday, the main cast had the first read through of the script. The musical is a huge commitment for all involved. The team is rehearsing after school on Wednesdays and on Saturdays. When the term break comes along, while the rest of us are on holidays, the Matilda team will use the break to further prepare for the show. Congratulations to all involved on our progress and thank you for all of the effort that has been put in thus far. Parent Teacher Night On Tuesday evening this week, parent teacher meetings were held for students in Years 8 and 10. Each interview ran for 5 minutes with the start and end of the interview being signalled by a bell, much like our school day. When students were available to take part, many of the meetings took the form of a student led conference. The hall was packed and teachers were kept busy as many parents made the most of the opportunity to meet with their childs teachers. Our next Parent / Student conferences will be held on 2 July from 3:30 until 7pm for parents with students in Years 7 and 9. Parents will again be able to book in- terviews with teachers via the school portal. Report Update By now, parents of students in Years 12, 11, 10 and 8 will have received their childs semester 1 reports. Next Friday 28 June, reports for students in Years 7 and 9 will be published and you will be able to access these via the parent por- tal on Sentral. If you are unable to access your childs report, please contact the school for assistance. Term 2 Week 8 21 June 2019

Reminder that Bootcamp is held on Friday mornings at 7.00 am

and is open to students, staff and parents.

Please wear appropriate footwear and bring a bottle of water. Brekkie Club serves breakfast at 8.00 am.

Building Progress A booth was set up in the hall on Tuesday evening, while the parent teacher interviews were taking place, to provide infor-mation about the current status of the school’s building projects. Departmental staff from school infrastructure and staff from the external project managers manned the booth. Parents were able to ask questions about the project while they waited for inter-views with teachers. Display boards provided information on the new sport complex, the refurbishment of Creative Arts and TAS teaching spaces in C-Block and the relocation of the Intensive English Centre from Chatswood High School to St Ives High School. A flyer handed out on the evening is attached to this newsletter. School infrastructure and the project managers plan further information booths. Details of these are attached in the newsletter. The information boards from last Tuesday will be on display at next Thursday’s P&C meeting. Killara H.S Vs St Ives H.S 'Basketball Extravaganza' On Friday last week, our senior boys basketball team played a friendly against Killara. The game was a joint initiative by the Student Representative Councils of both schools. The game was played at Killara in a real NBA style atmos-phere with cheerleaders, smoke, mascots, DJ and music. Killara made the most of the home court advantage defeating us 27 to 37. I cannot wait until we have our new courts and can host Killara in a few years’ time. Thanks to Mr Kettels for organising the team. Congratulations This week congratulations to:

Maja M (Year 7). Maja has been selected to represent Sydney North at the Combined High Schools Squash Champi-onships next month.

Cooper W (Year 7). Cooper has been selected as a member of the Ryde Hawks NSW intermediate baseball team that this week has been competing at the national championships held in Mildura Victoria. (check parental consent)

CHINESE CLASS EXCURSION

On Wednesday, 19 June, all Chinese classes in Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 went on an excursion to learn about Chinese culture, traditions and arts.

We started off the day by going to the Chinese Cultural centre in the city for a wonderful workshop called: Colourful Gui-zhou. We were warmly welcome and viewed art pieces such as creative and beautiful white copper art and natural won-ders from China through the exhibition where there was a master showing her ability, allowing the Chinese students to watch her immaculate craftsmanship. We were able to try “lü tea” (green tea), which is a popular Chinese tea, and also see the traditional Chinese clothing and objects. We then watched a video that told us about the Chinese culture in Gui Zhou and how unique and beautiful it is. There are many different minority Chinese groups in Gui Zhou but thanks to modern technology, all these groups are connected with trains that extend everywhere. After the video, we were able to try some traditional Chinese crafts such as batik and sewing. Batik is when a Master uses hot wax and Tjanting tools to create complex patterns on cloth. This process is very difficult and it can take up to two weeks to complete a full design. After that, the Master has to dye the wax which is a long process that can take a month to finish. These techniques are thousands of years old. After trying Batik for ourselves and seeing firsthand how tedious the task is, we came to appre-ciate the great patience and beauty of the craft. After a group photo and Chinese cultural fan gift to each of us, we had lunch at a restaurant where we enjoyed some delectable Chinese traditional dishes that we all loved. such as dump-lings, spiced stewed lamb, special sizzling beef short ribs, prawn and eggs, stir fried green beans with mince, stir-fried spice pork with bamboo shoots, shredded potato, Chinese salad and many other things. Not only was the food filling, but it was also delicious. We then went visiting China Book Store which was quiet and tranquil allowing students to browse books peacefully. Some books were traditional texts from China and some were new creative tales from all over the world. Lastly we separated into groups and explored the Paddy’s Market which was very interesting and fun. On the ex-cursion, all of us learnt new things about Chinese culture and traditions plus such great fun! Lydia P and Sami K, Year 11

Indicative project timeline

Investing in schools

The NSW Government is investing $6.5 billion over the next four years to deliver more than 190 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. In addition, a record $1.3 billion is being spent on school maintenance over four years. This is the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW.

St Ives High School upgrade

An upgrade is being planned for St Ives High School. The project will include the construction of a new multi-use indoor sport centre and Block C refurbishment.

Progress summaryThe project team has been working closely with the School Principal and P&C representative to guide the design of the new school facilities. The development application has been submitted to the local council for the new indoor sports centre.

The refurbishment of the Block C facilities continue with classes moved to temporary learning spaces while these works are underway.

Next stepsPending planning approvals, works on the new sport centre is expected to commence in mid 2019.

St Ives High School welcomes the Intensive English Centre (IEC)The IEC will relocate from the Chatswood High School, to the St Ives High School.

The relocation of the IEC to St Ives High School builds on the already rich learning environment and provides an opportunity for the school to become a vital learning hub, supporting a diverse community.

Our students will also benefit from the rich cultural and linguistic diversity and new leadership opportunities presented as we work together.

We are in the early stages of planning and will consult with the school community as the planning progresses.

Meet the project team and stay updatedWhile the exciting school upgrade continues, we are committed to openly sharing information. You can speak to us about this project using the contact details provided on the back cover.

Frequently asked questions

What works are underway? The refurbishment works on Block C facilities are underway. The internal works will improve the functionality of the spaces.

What steps will be taken to control noise and dust impacts during construction?Hoarding and shade cloth will be erected to reduce noise and dust impacts on the school and our neighbours. We are working with the Principal to managing the construction program to minimise disruption to students and learning.

How will traffic be managed?Traffic control and security measures will be in place where required for the safety of the school community.

What is an IEC?Intensive English Centres (IEC) provides intensive English language instruction, orientation, welfare and settlement support to newly arrived secondary school age students. We already benefit from the Intensive English Centre with many of our students having graduated from their programs.

When will the IEC relocation take place? The IEC will relocate to St Ives High School for the commencement of the 2020 school year.

Where will the IEC be located? While permanent facilities are being designed and constructed, the IEC students and teaching staff will initially move into the demountable classrooms already on site which St Ives students will vacate in Term 4.

We will be working closely with the Principal, staff and the school community during the planning process to identify the best location for permanent facilities to maximise co learning opportunities, maintain the character of St Ives High School and the identity of the IEC.

How will this relocation impact on the construction of the indoor sports centre? The relocation of the IEC and subsequent construction of the new facility will not impact the progress of the indoor sports centre.

How will you keep us informed during the upgrade?School infrastructure NSW will share construction updates and project information as the project progresses. We will provide information through information booths, face to face information sessions, project updates, our website and school newsletters.
