PRINCESS NOOR ADDS TOBIG BAFFERT WEEKEND
WITH DEL MAR DEB ROMP
Already with a GI Kentucky Derby victory in the bag, Bob
Baffert got another superstar performance from one of his
charges this weekend, as >TDN Rising Star= Princess Noor (Not
This Time) ran away to an explosive victory in the GI Del Mar
Debutante Sunday at the seaside oval.
Topping the delayed OBS April sale when hammering to Gary
Young for $1.35 million following a dazzling :20 1/5 quarter-mile
breeze, the dark bay did not disappoint when unveiled locally
Aug. 22, going wire to wire essentially on her own power the
entire race. Back on relatively short rest here, she was pounded
down to odds-on from an 8-5 morning-line quote.
Breaking inwardly, bumping into second choice and GII
Sorrento S. heroine My Girl Red (Texas Red) and squeezing that
one back to last, Princess Noor settled in a three-wide third as
barnmate Illumination (Medaglia d=Oro) dictated terms through
a :23.01 quarter. My Girl Red, who never got involved, was
pulled up at that point. The favorite moved in tandem with
Forest Caraway (Bodemeister) to overhaul the frontrunner past
a :45.49 half, but was going easier of the two and left the other
two behind at the top of the stretch.

DERBY WRAP: AUTHENTIC >NOT EVEN
TIRED=, ON TO PREAKNESS A day after picking up his record-tying sixth GI Kentucky Derby
win in a renewal as unorthodox as they come, trainer Bob
Baffert said victor Authentic (Into Mischief) Awasn=t even tired@
Sunday morning after going wire to wire and turning back odds-
on Tiz the Law (Constitution) in Saturday=s Run for the Roses.
AI couldn=t believe it, I thought he might be a little tired today,@
Baffert said. AHe came out of it well.@
The triumph for Baffert was plenty unorthodox as well. After
appearing to have a stranglehold on the Derby in the spring,
Baffert lost top contenders Charlatan (Speightstown) and Nadal
(Blame) to injury. Late bloomer Uncle Chuck (Uncle Mo) then
finished up the track in the GI Runhappy Travers S., eliminating
him from Derby contention.

Princess Noor draws clear | Benoit
Princess Noor Romps in Del Mar Debutante cont. from p1 Drifting in a bit once set down, she straightened quickly,
asserted herself fully past the furlong grounds and was under
wraps for much of the remainder for an extremely auspicious
romp. Forest Caraway held for second. The stewards posted aninquiry regarding the winner=s leftward break, but no action was
taken.
AWe knew going in she was a special filly,@ said Baffert. AShe
showed so much brilliance at the sale, that's why she cost somuch, and we got what we expected to see today. She broke a
little off kilter and was behind horses, but Victor didn't really
push her, especially at the end. We're happy to get the win.
We'll run her back at Santa Anita and then go from there.@ AShe's a little green. Only her second time [to race],@ added
winning rider Victor Espinoza. AComing away from there she
went in a bit and I tried to get her off as quickly as I could. You
try to control the babies as best as you can, especially at thebreak. My filly was OK from there. I really don't know how good
she is, because I haven't let her run yet. It's nice to be back at
Del Mar and riding good horses.@

Authentic Sunday morning at Churchill | Coady
Derby Wrap cont. from p1
Finally, in the Churchill Downs
paddock Saturday, his Thousand
Words (Pioneerof the Nile) flipped
and had to be scratched, leaving
Authentic as his lone starter. The
incident sent longtime Baffert
assistant Jimmy Barnes to the
hospital with a broken wrist,
adding one final touch of emotion
to Authentic=s win.
AJimmy is going to need surgery,
I think he=ll need eight screws in
his wrist but he actually was here
this morning. He=s a trooper,@
Baffert said. AI was so emotional yesterday because I wanted
him to be there. To me, that was most emotional Derby I=ve ever
been involved in because of what happened during that little
time frame. It was the most crazy 30 minutes I=ve had in racing.@
ABefore May, I was looking so strong and then everything just
went wrong,@ Baffert continued. AAnd to pull it off like that was
really exciting. Winning the Kentucky Derby is the biggest
moment in a trainer=s life. When you win it, it erases everything
that has gone bad.@
Roller Coaster Half-Hour for
Spendthrift
The late scratch of Thousand
Words also affected Spendthrift
Farm, which co-owns the colt with
Albaugh Family Stables and co-
owns Authentic with My
Racehorse, Madaket Stables and
Starlight Racing.
AIt was all so unbelievable. I
walked over with the Albaughs
and we=re all enjoying the
moment and then, the next thing
you know [Thousand Words]
exploded and went over,@ said
Mark Toothaker, stallion sales manager of Spendthrift Farm.
AThe state vet walked over and said he was a scratch. So you
had all the emotion of, you are within 20 minutes of having a
horse getting ready to run in the Kentucky Derby that we picked
out and we=re so excited and as we were walking through the
tunnel, I said to our general manger Ned Toffey, >If there is a
Derby God out there, maybe we can win.= For Authentic to just
keep giving it in the stretch, it was like he had an extra push.@

Authentic fends off Tiz the Law | Coady
A trip to Baltimore for the GI Preakness S. Oct. 3 is slated as
the next objective for both Authentic and Thousand Words, as
the latter escaped his paddock fall without injury. Baffert said
both colts will head to the shedrow of Hall of Famer D. Wayne
Lukas to stay for the next few weeks so Baffert doesn=t have to
ship them back to California in the interim.
ABeing that the Preakness is a few weeks away, I thought it
might be too hard on them to go back. So I have an assistant
trainer, this D. Wayne Lukas guy here,@ Baffert joked. ASo they=re
going to be in Wayne=s barn. We=re going to run them out of
here. If they=re working well and all going well, they=ll go to the
Preakness. I didn=t want to take them all the way to California
and back. I want to give them every opportunity. We=re planning
on [running] both if they=re doing well. Thousand Words, we=ll
give him another chance at it. He didn=t have a scratch on him.@
Barnes Back in Action Sunday Morning
Barnes was back to work dark and early Sunday morning,
albeit in a compromised capacity. He said he wasn=t going to say
anything about his broken right wrist Saturday until he rolled up
his sleeve and saw it at the wrong angle.
AWhen it happened, I wasn=t going to say anything. I was going
to say I was OK. I knew it kind of hurt,@ he said. AThen I pulled my
sleeve up and saw it was pointing a different direction. So I
pulled it back down and said, >I better say something.=@
Barnes watched the Derby on a phone in the ambulance on his
way to Norton Audubon Hospital. He said the ER personnel
knew he was connected to the Derby winner, and that the ER
doctor actually was a co-breeder of Baffert=s two-time Breeders=
Cup Sprint winner Midnight Lute (Real Quiet).
AHe didn=t surprise me, the way he trains and the way you
watch him move,@ Barnes said of Authentic.

Jimmy Barnes with Authentic before the Haskell | Equi-Photo
AHe=s just this big leaper. He=s got a huge stride on him. He just
got out there motoring along. Johnny V rode him superbly. He
committed early and if you=re going to go with him you=re going
to be running fast. So they kind of backed off a bit, from what I
saw. For him to straighten out and switch leads, because you
look at his earlier races and he was very erratic in the stretch in
numerous races. But Johnny V, when he pulled his stick through
to the left hand and got after him, boy, he just leveled out and
said, >They=re not going by me today.=@
Asked about the roller coaster of breaking his wrist in a scary
paddock accident and then winning a Derby less than a half-
hour later, Barnes said of horse racing, AYou can be on the floor
and then be up in the sky soaring.@
Tiz the Law in Good Shape, Next Start Undetermined
Sackatoga Stable=s beaten favorite Tiz the Law is scheduled to
return to New York Tuesday with plans for a next start to be
determined.
AI just looked him over,@ trainer Barclay Tagg said. AHis legs are
good. He ate good. Everything=s good.@
The four-time Grade I winner, who went off as the 7-10 chalk
Saturday, sustained only the second loss in his eight-race career,
with both setbacks coming at Churchill Downs. He was third in
last November=s GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. on a sealed sloppy
track.
AThe jock [Manny Franco] said that when he really had to get
down and run, he was kind of swimming on that track. He didn=t
like the track,@ Tagg said. AYou could see it in the stretch. He
looked like he was going to go on by and win easy. His last
[Beyer] number was a 109 [in the GI Runhappy Travers S.]. He
bounced down to a 103 this time ... I don=t want to say too much
about the Preakness. I just want to see how he is. He=ll go back
to New York and we=ll evaluate him.@ Cont. p8

AHe ran good and came out of it great. I was over at the barn
this morning and all is well,@ principal owner Jack Knowlton
added. AI=ll have [the Preakness] discussion with Barclay and
we=ll take a little time to see. My thinking is that we will [go],
but we=ll have the horse dictate what=s going to happen.
Certainly that would be my preference but we=ve just go to see
how he comes out and see how he works when we have the

works.@
Other Preakness Hopefuls
According to the Pimlico notes team, longshot third finisher in
the Derby Mr. Big News (Giant=s Causeway) is likely headed to
Baltimore. The three horses who had to scratch the week of the
Derby--Art Collector (Bernardini), King Guillermo (Uncle Mo)
and Finnick the Fierce (Dialed In)--are also Preakness-bound.
Among other potential Preakness horses are Mystic Guide
(Ghostzapper) and Dr Post (Quality Road), respectively first and
fourth in Saturday=s GII Jim Dandy S. at Saratoga; Manitoba
Derby winner Mongolian Wind (Mucho Macho Man), entered in
Monday=s Gold Cup S. at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg; Lebda
(Raison d=Etat), winner of the Miracle Wood S. and Private
Terms S. at Laurel over the winter and most recently third in the
Robert Hilton Memorial S. Aug. 28 at Charles Town; Pneumatic
(Uncle Mo), last-out winner of the Pegasus S. Aug. 15 at
Monmouth Park and fourth in the Belmont for Hall of Fame
trainer Steve Asmussen; and the Baffert-trained Azul Coast
(Super Saver), winner of the El Camino Real Derby Feb. 15 at
Golden Gate and second to Authentic in the GIII Sham S.
The Federico Tesio S. Monday at Laurel is a >Win and In=
qualifier for Triple Crown-nominated horses to the Preakness.
Happy Saver (Super Saver), undefeated in two career starts for
trainer Todd Pletcher, is the 1-2 program favorite for the 1
1/8-mile Preakness prep.

Vequist suffered a nose defeat when debuting going 4 1/2
furlongs at Parx, but found no equals when stepped up into the
GI Spinaway S. Sunday at Saratoga, pressing a fast pace and
romping clear impressively in the stretch to break her maiden in
the first Grade I race of the year for juveniles.
Unveiled as a tepid favorite July 29 in Bensalem for
owner/breeder Swilcan Stables, the bay chased a wire to wire
winner throughout and just missed when taking a final dive at
her foe nearing the finish, finishing 8 1/2 lengths clear of a next-
out winner in third.

Off as the narrow fourth choice behind even-money >TDN
Rising Star= Beautiful Memories (Hard Spun), Vequist broke a
step slowly, but quickly moved up to track frontrunning
Esplanade through a :22.41 quarter. The chalk, who was pulled
up in her previous effort, again began to hit the breaks before
the three-eighths pole, and Vequist and Esplanade separated
themselves from the rest approaching the lane.
Taking over at the top of the stretch, Vequist edged clear into
the final furlong and poured it on from there, cruising under the
line a dominant victress under Luis Saez.
The win was the second raid of a Saratoga Grade I for Thomas
McGrath=s Swilcan Stables and trainer Butch Reid, who upset
the GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. with Poseidon=s Warrior
(Speightstown) in 2012.
AIt was more about the morning training than it was her first
race,@ said Reid of running Vequist as a maiden in the Spinaway.
Cont. p11
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 11 OF 21 • THETDN.COM MONDAY • SEPTEMBER 7, 2020
AWe breezed her out of the gate one time and she was only
supposed to go a half-mile but she went in :48 and just kept
going 1:01, 1:13 and 1:26. Even though we ran her in that 4 1/2-
furlong race, it was more just getting a race under her belt. She
was going to be looking for longer things down the road. You
don't expect to win a Grade I with a maiden, but I knew the
distance wasn't a problem.@
AThe plan today was to try and follow the speed,@ said Saez.
AThere was a lot of speed in the race so I wanted to break from
there and find a good spot. Everything went so well, we broke
and we were right there. When we got to the three-eighths I
had a lot of horse and when we came to the stretch she took
off.@
Pedigree Notes:
Vequist plants the Grade I flag early for her freshman sire (by
Uncle Mo), just the eighth horse to win the GI Kentucky Derby
while undefeated and first champion 2-year-old to win it since
Seattle Slew in 1977. She is the Darley resident=s fifth winner
and second black-type winner, following Soaring Free S. hero
Gretzky the Great. The first black-type performer out of 2014 GII
Black-Eyed Susan S. runner-up Vero Amore, she has a yearling
Astern (Aus) half-sister and a weanling half-sister by Daredevil.
Vero Amore, a $15,000 purchase by Reid as a juvenile in 2013,
was bred to Accelerate this spring.
THE WEEK IN REVIEW: AUTHENTIC
REPRESENTS BAFFERT'S FINEST WORKby Bill Finley
The Authentic (Into Mischief) who won the GI Haskell S. at
Monmouth by a nose didn't look like a horse that could win the
GI Kentucky Derby. Against a field decidedly weaker than what
he would face seven weeks later at Churchill Downs, he nearly
squandered a 2 1/2-length lead in the stretch and seemed to be
running on fumes in the last few yards of the mile-and-an-eighth
race. The mile-and-a-quarter loomed as a major obstacle.
Even trainer Bob Baffert acknowledged that Authentic needed
to take things to another level.
"I'm happy with him. But he still has a lot of improving to do,"
he said after the Haskell. "We're going to work on him a little
until then (the Derby)."
Complicating matters in the Derby, Authentic didn't break
sharply, compromising his chances. By the time he made the
lead, the field had completed the opening quarter-mile in 22.92.
So when Tiz the Law (Constitution) ranged alongside Authentic
at the quarter pole in the Derby, the race appeared over. But it
was a different Authentic that showed up Saturday. Cont. p12
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 12 OF 21 • THETDN.COM MONDAY • SEPTEMBER 7, 2020
Authentic wears the roses | Coady
He didn't lose his focus and he had something left in the tank
for the final furlong. He actually spurted clear of Tiz the Law to
win by 1 1/4 lengths.
"Yeah, I heard all of that. People saying after the Haskell he
definitely can't go that far," said John Velazquez, who picked up
the mount when Mike Smith chose to ride Honor A.P. (Honor
Code). "The mile-and-a-quarter will be very far for him. I was
very confident. I've got a good trainer."
That much is obvious. Somehow, Baffert orchestrated a
complete makeover of Authentic. Much of the work seems to
have been accomplished in the mornings. Baffert is known for
working his horses fast but took a different approach with
Authentic. His works included a one-mile breeze in 1:38.60, part
of a pattern that included longer and slower works than what
you normally see from the Hall of Fame trainer. The end result
was a more composed horse who thrived at a
mile-and-a-quarter.
Back in May, Authentic was being overshadowed by Nadal
(Blame) and Charlatan (Speightstown), horses who were typical
of what the Baffert operation has been producing over the last
many years. Like American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) and
Justify (Scat Daddy), they didn't necessarily need any help from
their trainer. They accomplished what they accomplished
because they were super talented. Authentic is a very good
horse, but also an example of the type of horse who might not
have won the Derby with any other trainer.
With Baffert starting out every year with 50 or 60 superbly
bred, expensive 2-year-olds, he has a chance every year to come
into the Derby with a hand that is stronger than any of his rivals.
That is among the reasons he has six Kentucky Derby wins, tying
him with Ben Jones for first place among all trainers.
Cont. p13
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 13 OF 21 • THETDN.COM MONDAY • SEPTEMBER 7, 2020
Baffert will surely get to No. 7 before he's done and could
easily win 10 or so. If that happens he will unquestionably be the
greatest Derby trainer in history.
In the meantime, the Ben Jones-versus-Baffert debate is an
interesting one.
Jones needed only 11 starts in the Derby to record his six wins,
accomplished over a 14-year span from 1938 to 1952. Baffert
has started 33 horses in the Derby over 24 years. But he has
been operating in an era where there are far more foals and the
number of starters in the Derby is often 20.
Jones won three Derbies where there were 11 or fewer
starters, including in 1948 when Citation topped a field of six.
The other factor that must be considered is that many believe
that Ben Jones was not the trainer of Citation and it was,
instead, his son Jimmy Jones. The younger Jones was listed as
Citation's trainer for the first 15 starts of his career before being
entered under the name of Ben for the Derby Trial and the
Derby. After the Derby, Citation continued to run in Jimmy's
name. The move was made to give Ben a chance to draw closer
to Herbert "Derby Dick" Thompson for most Derby wins by a
trainer. Thompson had four at the time.
Baffert said Sunday morning that both Authentic and
Thousand Words (Pioneerof the Nile) will likely go next in the GI
Preakness S. Baffert has seven Preakness wins, tying him for first
with R. Wyndham Walden, who dominated the race in the late
1800s. With Baffert heading to Baltimore with a new and
improved Authentic, win No. 8 may only be four weeks away.
Preakness Could Decide 3-Year-Old Championship
Entering Saturday, Tiz the Law looked like a cinch to win the
3-year-old championship, but not anymore as Authentic is in the
mix. A Preakness win could vault Authentic into the top spot in
the division, where he would remain if neither he nor Tiz the
Law wins the GI Breeders' Cup Classic. Jack Knowlton, who
heads the group that owns Tiz the Law, is well aware of the
possible scenarios.
AI think we are still in the lead for the Eclipse, but if Authentic
goes there and wins he'll be in the lead," Knowlton said. "I'd like
to go there and win that race. If we do that and beat Authentic
that would put an exclamation point on the end of the sentence.
If neither of us win, I think we'd be in a better position with
three Grade I wins. That's where I am.
"In all likelihood, he has a better chance of winning the
Preakness than the Breeders' Cup Classic, where you'd be facing
horses like Tom's d'Etat [Smart Strike], Maximum Security
[Maximum Security] and some other really good older horses.
I'd like one more go against the 3-year-olds."

Kudos to Churchill Stewards
The Churchill Downs stewards could not have handled the
disqualification of Maximum Security in last year's Derby any
worse. First, they failed to post an inquiry into what was clearly
a very roughly run race and then they refused to take any
questions from the media after issuing a brief statement that
left a lot of questions unanswered.
Apparently, they have learned from their mistakes. After
Friday's sixth race, which involved the disqualification of Lasting
Legacy (Tapizar), the chief steward Barbara Borden came on the
track's television feed to explain the decision. Stewards' reports
involving DQ's are also posted on the Churchill Downs website.
Let's hope other tracks follow Churchill's lead. Transparency is
never a bad thing.
Another Horse Wins After Drastic Late Odds Drop
By now, horseplayers are used to seeing dramatic drops in the
odds after the field leaves the gate, but what happened in
Saturday's second race at Saratoga was hard to fathom. When
the horses loaded into the gate, Vineyard Sound (Stormy
Atlantic) was 24-1. While the race was being run Vineyard Sound
dropped to 11-1. A winner, of course, Vineyard Sound paid off at
8-1.
Saying it again: horse racing is the only gambling game where
you can win a bet and feel like you've lost.
NYRA ANNOUNCES JOCKEY COVID-19
PROTOCOLS FOR BELMONT FALL MEET The New York Racing Association announced Sunday its
COVID-19 health and safety protocols for jockeys during the
27-day Belmont Park fall meet, which will open Friday, Sept. 18
and run through Sunday, Nov. 1.
In order to mitigate risk and reduce the spread of COVID-19,
Belmont Park will be closed to out-of-town jockeys until further
notice. Members of the regular NYRA jockey colony who travel
to ride at any other racetrack during the Belmont Park fall meet
will be required to provide two negative COVID-19 tests taken
within a five-day window in order to return to ride at Belmont.
Jockeys traveling out of state who have completed the required
testing will then be physically isolated in the jockey quarters for
three additional calendar days.
For example, if a NYRA jockey travels out of New York to
compete on a Saturday, then that jockey should be tested upon
return to New York on Sunday and tested again on Thursday.

Belmont Park | Chelsea Durand
Should both tests be returned negative then the jockey will be
allowed to ride races at Belmont beginning Friday and will be
provided an isolated area on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
NYRA jockeys who have traveled outside of New York state to
compete at other racetracks beginning the week of Aug. 31 will
also be required to provide two negative COVID-19 tests taken
within the 5-day window preceding that jockey's first mount at
Belmont Park.
Jockeys who have remained in New York and not competed at
other tracks following the conclusion of the Saratoga meet Sept.
7 will be required to provide a negative COVID-19 test taken
within the 7-day window preceding that jockey's first mount at
Belmont Park.
All testing must be performed in New York state.
Condition Book 1 for the fall meet currently lists 17 active
jockeys and two apprentice riders who will be designated
members of the NYRA jockey colony. Jockeys and agents
interested in being included in the NYRA jockey colony may
contact NYRA Senior Vice President of Racing Operations Martin
Panza for consideration by Sept. 18.
In addition to race-day safety protocols which include standard
health screening and temperature checks, the jockey quarters at
Belmont Park have been substantially altered to provide
maximum social distancing and reduce density. All areas
accessed by jockeys during the regular course of a race day are
closed to outside personnel, including credentialed media, and
are cleaned and disinfected throughout the day.
Jockeys are not permitted access to the barn area. In order to
work a horse in the morning, the jockey must meet the horse in
the paddock and may then proceed to the main track.
Jockey agents must produce a negative COVID-19 test in order
to gain access to the barn area. Races will continue to be drawn
via Zoom.
All valets must provide a negative COVID-19 test taken
anytime after Sept. 13 in order to access the jockey quarters on
opening day, Sept. 18. Valets working in the jockey quarters are
not permitted in the barn area.
JACKIE=S WARRIOR MEETS >RISING STAR=
PAIR IN HOPEFULby Joe Bianca
With the obvious caveat that anything can happen with 2-
year-olds this early in their development--look no further than
Sittin On Go (Brody=s Cause)=s 24-1 upset in Saturday GII Iroquois
S.--Monday=s GI Runhappy Hopeful S. looks solidly like a three-
horse affair, as arguably the three most impressive dirt juveniles
of the meet will clash in the seven-furlong test.
Made the fractional favorite on the morning line at 7-5, J. Kirk
and Judy Robison=s Jackie=s Warrior (Maclean=s Music) looks
formidable in his attempt for back-to-back Spa graded stakes
scores. A first-out winner going five panels over next-out >TDN

Drawn outside of what little speed there is, the $95,000
Keeneland September grad figures to work out a dream trip as
he stretches out an additional furlong.
Klaravich Stables= Reinvestment Risk (Upstart) is a tick behind
at 8-5 and may well go off favored at final odds. Unveiled going
a local three-quarters in a loaded looking field of firsters Aug. 1,
the $280,000 OBS March buy made short work of his rivals,
rocketing away to a 7 3/4-length romp and >TDN Rising Star=
honors. Clicking off his final quarter in :23.81 while geared down
late, Reinvestment Risk was flattered when third finisher
Olympiad (Speightstown) returned to a sharp maiden victory
Saturday at the Spa.
Rounding out the big three is another >Rising Star= in Shadwell
Stable=s Mutasaabeq (Into Mischief). Backed down to 85 cents
on the dollar debuting at 5 1/2 furlongs here Aug. 8, the
$425,000 Keeneland November weanling buy pressed the pace
widest out and drew clear in the stretch to a 4 1/2-length
success.
MAIDENS FIGURE TO HAVE BIG SAY IN DEL
MAR FUTURITYby Joe Bianca
Dr. Schivel (Violence), a blowout maiden winner last out, plus
a pair of horses yet to earn their diploma make up a quality trio
of major contenders in Monday=s GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity.
Backed down to 3-2 debuting June 21 at Santa Anita, the Luis
Mendez trainee rallied to be third after some trouble and was
runner-up July 4 at Los Alamitos. Jumping way forward in his
local bow Aug. 8, the bay blasted clear to a 5 3/4-length victory,
earning by far his highest career Beyer with an 86.
Returning to take another crack at him is the runner-up from
that day, Spielberg (Union Rags). Selling for a cool $1 million at
Keeneland September, the chestnut was backed down to 4-5
debuting for Bob Baffert, but was no match for Dr Schivel.
Breaking from the rail, he drilled five furlongs in :59 3/5 (2/74)
over this track Aug. 22.
Dixie=s Two Stents (Quality Road) looks to give Doug O=Neill
his third Del Mar Futurity win. Narrowly bested by Baffert=s
odds-on Freedom Fighter (Violence) debuting locally Aug. 1, the
$60,000 Keeneland November buy clocked his final furlong in
:11.49 that day and has come back to blow out five panels in a
bullet :59 flat (1/58) Aug. 30.
Weston (Hit It a Bomb), a 21-1 victor over Dr. Schivel in the
aforementioned Arcadia heat, backed up that result with a
game tally in the GII Best Pal S. Aug. 8. He=ll likely need a big
figure boost off his career top of 67 to make it three in a row.

Following up her Ballerina success with a score in the GII
Gallant Bloom H. at Belmont, the homebred was a well-beaten
sixth at 2-1 in the GI Breeders= Cup Filly & Mare Sprint and
retreated to 12th when stretched out to two turns in the GI
Apple Blossom H. for D. Wayne Lukas. Returning to the Carlos
Martin barn after that, she was an odds-on runner-up in the GIII
Vagrancy H. June 27 at Belmont and fourth in defense of her
Ballerina title last out Aug. 8.
Well supported here at a nickel below 7-5 with Irad Ortiz, Jr.
subbing for the unavailable Javier Castellano, the dark bay
settled in a distant fourth as Lady=s Island blitzed through a
:21.64 quarter and sizzling :43.81 half. The frontrunner drifted
wide off the turn, and Come Dancing attacked from the two
path with Blamed advancing on the rail. Come Dancing started
to do better of those two at the sixteenth pole, struck the lead
soon after and held a game Lady=s Island at bay to prevail.
The Honorable Miss is Come Dancing=s fifth graded stakes
triumph, but her first victory in nearly a year.
AI race almost exclusively fillies. They get to a point where you
feel like it's time and they want to go on and breed and move on
to the next phase of their career. That was not the case with
Come Dancing,@ said winning owner/breeder Marc Holliday of
Blue Devil Racing Stable. AThis horse is happiest when she is on
the racetrack and when it's race day. She was on her toes today
and she knew exactly what the deal was. You can see it in the
morning and in the paddock. This is a mare that just wants to
run. I felt it wouldn't be fair to put the horse out to pasture a
year too early. I hope to have Come Dancing babies for the next
15 to 20 years. We'll see what happens.@
AI was happy to see that Irad was able to get her to break and
settle and he had her in the clear when he made his move,@
added Martin. AThe track has been very fast but I just wanted to
see the old Come Dancing give us a run like the champion that
she is. It's very gratifying that Marc brought her back. A lot
naysayers were saying she lost a step but hopefully she can
come back and finish the year strong and we can be vindicated.
I'm so happy for Come Dancing, she's a special horse for us.@

It took nearly every step of the nine furlongs, but favored
Pixelate, second or third in five straight previous stakes tries,
dove late to just get up in Sunday=s GII Del Mar Derby.
A third-out graduate last summer at Arlington, the Godolphin
homebred was a neck second at 35-1 in the Awad S. at Belmont
and followed that up with a score when closing out his 2-year-
old season in Aqueduct=s Central Park S. Third in the Texas Turf
Mile S. Jan. 26 at Sam Houston, he was runner-up in the Black
Gold S. Feb. 29 at Fair Grounds and May 23 War Chant S. at
Churchill. Dropping a spot in the Audubon S. there June 20, he
was last seen completing the exacta in the Kent S. at Delaware
July 4.
Made the clear favorite in this 11-horse field after shipping
cross-country, Pixelate found a good spot tracking in a distant,
ground-saving third as 50-1 shot Dominant Soul showed the way
through a :24.63 quarter. Margot=s Boy turned up the heat past
a :49.77 half and the chalk drew in closer midway around the far
turn before angling three deep at the head of the lane. The
frontrunner briefly looked as though he might steal it, but was
overtaken by Margot=s Boy at the eighth pole. That one went on
with it until deep stretch, but Pixelate found just enough to tag
him in the shadow of the wire.
AI talked to Mike [Stidham] this morning and we both agreed
that we had the best horse in the race,@ said winning rider
Umberto Rispoli. AI said I wanted to ride him up closer than
normal for him; I told him this is a smaller tighter course, not
like Churchill. He said, >You ride him like you want to.= I had a
great trip and he fired when he had to. I'm very happy. And I've
waited 16 years [his riding career] to wear these [pointing to the
Godolphin royal blue silks].@
AMy dad [Richard Mandella] and Michael have been friends for
a long time,@ said Gary Mandella, who saddled the horse for
Stidham. AMichael sends his horses here to my dad's barn and
dad sends his horses back east to Michael. I'm happy to help
him win a big race. The horse arrived Thursday, galloped a
couple days and he was ready to go. We didn't do anything. My
instruction to [Rispoli] was, >Did Mike call you? Yes? Then good
luck.=@
Pedigree Notes:
One of 87 stakes winners for the late City Zip, Pixelate
becomes his 33rd graded stakes winner with the victory. He is
the second foal out English SW Speckled, a half-sister to MGSW
Skylighter (Sky Mesa). His third dam Nastique was a MGISW.
Speckled has an unraced juvenile More Than Ready filly named
National Flower, a yearling filly by Astern (Aus) and a weanling
Hard Spun filly. She was bred to Sky Mesa this term.
ARROGATE YEARLINGS KEEP THE TORCH
BURNING
by Katie Ritz
Arrogate=s first book of 143 mares, a who=s who of some of the
top breeding stock in the country, reflected the jaw-dropping
career of North America=s richest racehorse. Dual Eclipse
Champion Songbird (Medaglia d=Oro) was one of several
champions sent to Arrogate during his first year at stud.

Arrogate colt out of Crosswinds | EquiSport Photo
AArrogate=s first book was incredibly special,@ said Juddmonte=s
Stallions Nominations Manager Leif Aaron. AHalf of the book was
graded stakes winners or graded stakes producers, and a
quarter of it was Grade I winners or Grade I producers. Breeders
brought their very best mares to Arrogate.@
That first book has now transformed into a formidable group
of yearlings. No one could have predicted the circumstances in
which Arrogate=s first offspring would enter the sales ring. Soon
after they turned yearlings, a worldwide pandemic ensued,
accompanied by an uncertain market. Then months later, the
tragic death of their sire rocked the racing world.
AHis death was an incredible loss for the breed,@ lamented Tom
Hinkle.
Hinkle Farms will have one member of each crop from
Arrogate, with a yearling and weanling currently on the farm
and a mare in foal to Arrogate.
AOf the two that we have, I couldn=t be more pleased. They=re
very similar--strong, a lot of leg and a lot of bone,@ Hinkle said.
The yearling, a colt out of the Storm Cat mare Crosswinds, is
slated as Hip 116 in the Keeneland September Sale. The
youngster is a half-brother to two graded stakes winners
including GISW Weep No More (Mineshaft).
AHe=s a really handsome colt,@ Hinkle said. AHe=s big and strong,
and is very correct. From day one, he=s been a pleasure to be
around. He was always very competitive in the paddock and is
willing to do whatever we ask of him.@
An additional 54 Arrogate yearlings are set for the Keeneland
sale, and 12 more are cataloged for the Fasig-Tipton Selected
Yearlings Showcase.
AArrogate is going to be well-represented,@ Aaron said of the
two upcoming sales. AThis would be a great opportunity for
buyers to go out and get what could possibly be a piece of
history. At the end of the day, we=re only going to have three
crops from him and who knows what he=ll be. He could be
anything. I mean, he was one of the greatest racehorses of all
time.@
Aaron said he believes that the trends in Arrogate=s yearlings
are representative of the physicals that buyers are looking for.
AWe=re excited because right now, the two things everybody
wants is scope and substance,@ said Aaron. AWith the Arrogates,
we=re really seeing that. To me, it=s a good mixture of the scope
and prettiness of Unbridled=s Song, but the substance that
Distorted Humor throws in.@
The Juddmonte connections took notice of Arrogate=s physical
at the Keeneland September Sale, where they purchased him as
a yearling for $560,000.
AHe was a very balanced horse,@ Aaron noted. AHe had a ton of
bone as a yearling, which is something he=s really putting into
his offspring, but he still had that stretch that Unbridled=s Song
gives you--the two-turn, Classic-looking horse that covers a lot
of ground. And then the Baffert secret ingredient was the speed
and the ability to carry that speed over two turns.@
That ability was taken to the big stage on August 27, 2016,
when Arrogate stormed to victory in the GI Travers in a 13 1/2-
length, record-breaking performance.
AArrogate=s Travers was absolutely a special day,@ Aaron
recalled. AWhen he came in that race and blew away the field
and set a track record doing it, I think it was pretty obvious to
everybody how good he was and what kind of star he could be.@
After clinching three more Grade I wins including a Breeders=
Cup victory, Arrogate retired from racing and joined the roster
at Juddmonte. That same year, Leif Aaron took on the role as
Stallion Nominations Manager.
AComing here with Arrogate was very exciting for me because
my first job was at Juddmonte when I was 16, mucking stalls,@
he remembered. Cont. p20

ASo to come back with Arrogate to help be a part of running his
book was very special to me. I got to deal with a lot of top-class
breeders and top-class mares.@
In meeting Arrogate=s offspring over the past two years, Aaron
said he has found a common thread in the group.
AOne of the traits that Arrogate possessed and that his
offspring also possess is kind of an intangible trait, but it=s his
personality,@ he said. AThey=re horses that want to be on the
move. Arrogate was always tough to stand up for pictures
because he wanted to be doing something. He absolutely had
that will to win, and I=m glad to see his offspring showing some
of that same trait.@
As the Arrogate yearlings make their way to the sales in the
coming days, the next chapter begins in the champion=s story.
AThis year with the yearling sales, it=s a little bittersweet,@
Aaron admitted. ALosing Arrogate was a massive loss for the
farm. It was a massive loss to the breeders that supported him,
and it was a massive loss to the fans. I think the history books
will show that it was a massive loss to the breed. He was such a
talent and his offspring look absolutely special. He has every
chance underneath him to keep the torch going, and we would
love to see that happen.@

SUPERMAN SHAQ DELIVERS IN RISING STAR
GRADUATION Superman Shaq (Shackleford), a half-brother to champion
Monomoy Girl (Tapizar), disappointed with a dull effort in his
debut, but made amends with a >TDN Rising Star= worthy
graduation at Del Mar Sunday. Shedding blinkers and sent off
the 5-2 favorite for this second start, the chestnut colt strode
out to the early lead and had company through a quarter in
:22.08. He began inching clear turning for home, spurted further
away after a half in :45.77 and bound home a 3 3/4-length
winner. Parnelli (Quality Road) was second and Hot Pastrami
(Dominus) was third. The time for the 5 1/2 furlongs was
1:04.25.
Superman Shaq was beaten 23 1/4 lengths when sixth after
pressing the pace in his six-furlong debut at Del Mar Aug. 8, but
had put in a solid string of three works since that Aug. 8 effort,
most recently going five furlongs in 1:00 flat (3/58) Aug. 30.
AI thought I did, but I didn=t have him fit for the first race,@
trainer Peter Miller admitted Sunday evening. AThe blinkers off
today helped him relax, too.@
Miller said the colt could make his next start in the Sept. 26
GI American Pharoah S., a Win and You=re in race for the
GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile.
Superman Shaq was a $230,000 Fasig-Tipton October yearling
and put in a sizzling quarter-mile work in :20 3/5 before reselling
for $550,000 at this year=s OBS Spring sale. In addition to
Monomoy Girl, who continued her illustrious career with a
victory in Friday=s GI La Troienne S., the colt is a half to fellow
>TDN Rising Star= and graded winner Mr. Monomoy (Palace
Malice). Drumette, in foal to Mastery, sold for $1.85 million at
the 2018 Keeneland November sale. She produced a filly by
Mastery in 2019 and a colt by Tapit in 2020.

Waist Deep graduated by a front-running eight lengths going
5 1/2 furlongs at Delaware Park July 22 and was a well-beaten
fourth behind Pico d=Oro (Curlin) in the Aug. 9 Runhappy Ellis
Park Juvenile. Trying two turns for the first time, the bay gelding
jumped out to the early lead, setting fractions of :24.66 and
:48.68, and skipped clear in upper stretch for a confident tally.
AIn his last start, he cut his leg during shipping and we really
had to work on it before the race,@ said winning trainer Anthony
Farrior. AHe really wasn=t comfortable the whole week and then
he got in trouble in the race. We always thought he was a nice
horse, so we wanted to give him another try in stakes company.
After his second start, we saw what he was showing us in the
morning, so we felt he had stakes ability. In the mornings we
never really go to the bottom of him. Every time some other
horse would come up to him, he would want to go on. So I
wasn=t worried about this being his first time around two turns.
Farrior continued, AHe=s a nice horse. We=ll probably give him
the rest of the winter off, turn him out and let him grow,
because he has a lot of growing to do.@

Veteran Battle Station, a dual restricted black-type winner at
two and three and an occasional claimer at four and five, was
both the longest shot on the board and the winner in Sunday=s
Lucky Coin S. Battle Station broke sharply to sit just off
Readyforprimetime and Pulsate as the first quarter flew by in
:21.97 and the half in :44.71. Looking for room coming off the
turn, the dark bay had to move to the three path to find clear
sailing. He ground down the leaders, switching to his wrong
lead as he sailed by about a sixteenth from home. The Lucky
Coin marked his first open victory in a listed stakes.
Four out of Battle Station=s five career wins came at two and
three, while his July 15 allowance/optional claimer victory at
Delaware was his first trip to the winner=s circle in two years.
He=s had four different trainers in his career and is currently in
his second stint in the Atras barn, for whom he finished fifth
over this course and distance just nine days prior.

Kaleem Shah's Madone found running room late and surged to
victory in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf S. Sunday evening. The
favorite was unhurried early and fell well back in the field.
Racing keenly behind tepid splits, she took closer order but ran
up on heels in the tightly bunched field. Full of run but with
nowhere to go nearing the home stretch, the dark bay filly
finally found a seam to run through and surged to the wire
ahead of Nimbostratus and Ivy League, who had both taken the
overland route.
Nimostratus just got her nose in front of Ivy League on the
wire, but the stewards ruled that the filly had come out and
impeded the third-place finisher and their placements were
reversed.
The first Northern Hemisphere black-type winner for her
reverse shuttle sire, Madone opened her career with a
late-running one-length victory over this same course and
one-mile distance July 31. The dark bay filly was a $70,000
KEENOV weanling and a $50,000 KEESEP yearling before selling
for $125,000 at this year's OBS March sale. Madone=s dam has a
filly of 2019 by Astern (Aus) and a colt of this year by Cairo

SO GRACIOUS (f, 4, Speightstown--Spanish Gold, by Medaglia

maiden special weight over the main track at Laurel Jan. 18.
Dismissed at 35-1, the bay filly raced near the back of a strung-
out field behind fractions of :21.70 and :44.59. Behind a wall of
horses at the top of the lane, she shifted out several paths for
clear running room and, once she saw daylight, unleashed a
furious late kick to get up in the shadow of the wire to win by a
half-length over favored Keota (Lonhro {Aus}). Her shift to the
center of the course caught the attention of the stewards, who
put up the inquiry sign, but eventually determined there had
been no infraction. So Gracious has a yearling half-brother by

last seen in action completing the superfecta in the GIII Sweet

frontrunners early on, the blinkered dark bay showed a good
turn of foot and inched into contention leaving the bend. Within

scampered clear to win by two lengths.

READY SOUL (c, 3, More Than Ready--Secretariat's Soul {Ire},
by Sadler's Wells) debuted last fall with a 5 1/2-furlong third on
the all-weather, then sat on the bench for 10 months,
reappearing Aug. 9 with a switch to turf and another third. Off at
nearly 3-1 to make the third time a charm, Ready Soul didn=t get
up until the very last strides for a nail-biting win. Shuffled to
midpack while others did the heavy lifting through a quarter in
:23.63 and a half in :47.18, Ready Soul looked well-beaten down
the lane as eventual runner-up Union Colonel (Colonel John)
appeared home free. In the last strides, Union Colonel was
suddenly swarmed by both Ready Soul and Waltzing Champ
(Ghostzapper) with a photo showing just a nose and a head
separated the three at the wire. The homebred winner is out of
a full-sister to the Fipke star Perfect Soul (Ire), Canada=s
champion grass horse in 2003 and a GISW in the U.S. as well.
She has a 2-year-old full-sister to Ready Soul named Magical
Soul, who was off the board in her first career start at Saratoga
Aug. 30 for owner Tobey L. Morton. Secretariat=s Soul also has a

SOUPER MUNNINGS (f, 2, Munnings--Mylitta, by Sky Mesa),
fresh off a head second in her five-furlong debut over this
course Aug. 16, swerved to the outside at the break, but was
intent on the lead and secured it immediately. Ticking off
fractions of :22.65 and :46.28, she held the others at bay
throughout and had enough left to stave off a late charge from
In My Opinion (Munnings), who also finished just behind her in
their joint unveiling. Souper Munnings crossed the wire a neck
the best Sunday as the 8-5 chalk. Hailing from the same family
as 1994 Canadian Horse of the Year Alywow (Alysheba), the
winner=s dam has a yearling colt by Distorted Humor and a 2020

debut at this track Aug. 2. Sent off at 5-1, the chestnut filly
tracked the pace through a quarter in :23.27 and rolled up to
challenge for the lead after a half in :46.64. She surged to lead in
upper stretch and sailed home 2 3/4 lengths in front. Favored
Bellamore (Empire Maker) rallied four wide into the lane and
raced greenly while chasing the winner home in second.
Woodslane Farm purchased Prospector=s Moon for $350,000 as
a Keeneland September yearling in 2013. Malibu Curl is her first

CONSTERNATION (IRE) (f, 2, Acclamation {GB}--Easton Arch, by
Arch) was runner-up going six furlongs on debut at Limerick
June 29 for owner Eimear O=Brien and trainer Andrew Slattery.
Sent off at 6-1 in her stateside bow, the bay miss was off a half-
step slowly and trailed the field early. She began picking off foes
with a half-mile to cover and wound up for the stretch run with
a six-wide rally and swept to the lead under a motionless
Drayden Van Dyke to win by 1 3/4 lengths. Queen ofthe Temple
(Temple City) was second. Easton Arch produced a filly by James
Garfield (Ire) this year. The mare, in foal to Declaration of War,
sold for $130,000 at the 2016 Keeneland November sale. That in
utero foal, now named Dark Spectre (Ire), graduated over the
all-weather at Lingfield Aug. 4.
AWe are always scouting the globe for talent and
Consternation came onto our radar after her debut at Limerick
in which she was a sneaky-good second in our opinion,@ Eclipse
Thoroughbred=s Aron Wellman explained. AThe race was just shy
of seven furlongs, which is a taxing distance and she seemed a
very smart filly who handled being inside of a large field and she
showed bravery while bulling her way through the pack and
accelerating noticeably to gain second. She looked like a filly
with a turn of foot, might appreciate firm turf and a route of
ground. It=s early days, but so far she=s made us look smart.@
Wellman continued, APaddy Gallagher hosted Andrew
Slattery=s son last year in California, as he=s now an aspiring
apprentice jockey and we got good vibes from their yard once
Consternation came into view as a potential purchase. Eclipse
put the deal together and brought Chuck Winner is as a partner.
Chuck has been a huge supporter of the game and we both have
had good filly imports with Paddy in the past, so we=re delighted
Consternation delivered the type of performance she did today.
She jumped through all the hoops, transitioned like a class filly
with a lot of natural talent and we have high hopes for the
future. She=s in good hands with Paddy, as he has an incredible
knack with Euro fillies and if all goes well we will target the
Surfer Girl S. at Santa Anita next month.@ Click for the

PRECOCITY THE KEY ATNEW-LOOK ASCOT
By Kelsey Riley
The yearling sale caravan rolls onto Newmarket on Monday for
the relocated Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale, where 257
commercial youngsters will go under the hammer. The fledgling
sale which celebrate its fourth renewal rides the momentum of
a pair of group-winning 2-year-olds at major meetings over the
summer, with Steel Bull (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire})=s victory in the G3
Molecomb S. at Glorious Goodwood preceding Miss Amulet (Ire)
(Sir Prancealot {Ire})=s score in the G2 Lowther S. at York=s Ebor
meeting, which followed a victory in Naas=s Listed Marwell S.
Both have already turned a profit for connections: Steel Bull, a
,15,000 yearling, was sold privately to Chantal Regalado-
Gonzalez after his Molecomb win, while Miss Amulet, with the
residual value of black-type aside, has earned in excess of
,84,000 off a ,7,500 purchase price. Miss Amulet is set to
appear in the G1 Cheveley Park S. on Sept. 26, while Steel Bull
also looks bound for Group 1 company in the autumn.
AThose kinds of flagship horses are crucial for any sale,@ said
Matt Prior, Tattersalls Ascot=s head of sales. ALast year we sold
approximately 150 horses and within that we=ve got a real
flagship colt and a flagship filly. It=s been an ideal showcase for
the saleBSteel Bull was bought for ,15,000, won the Molecomb
hugely impressively and looked unlucky in his last start and like
one to keep an eye on in the later Group 1s in the year.@ Cont. p2
ALL HAIL THE KING IN MOULIN In the absence of Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}), Kameko
(Kitten=s Joy) and the retired Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}),
Sunday=s G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp boasted almost
everything else that still held some claim to elevated status in
the mile category and it was TDN Rising Star Persian King (Ire)
(Kingman {GB}) who emerged supreme. Long deemed more
than capable of a performance such as this, Godolphin SNC and
Ballymore Thoroughbred Ltd=s imposing specimen just needed
things to fall right and with conditions in his favour and an ideal
target horse in Circus Maximus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) it was all set
up ideally here. Sunk in the heavy ground when fourth behind
Palace Pier in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville Aug. 16,
the 18-5 second favourite who is unbeaten at this track tanked
along with relish in the hands of Pierre-Charles Boudot in a close
second with the rest detached throughout the early stages.

IT SAYS A LOT ABOUT WHERE THE SALE
HAS COME IN FOUR YEARS THAT NOW
WE’RE STARTING TO OFFER THE
SIBLINGS TO BLACK-TYPE WINNERS
THAT WE’VE SOLD.Matt Prior
Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale Preview Cont. from p1
He added, AMiss Amulet has been a revelation for a filly that
cost ,7,500. She=s a great bargain buy type of advert, which is
what Ascot has the reputation for. Summer Sands was that the
year before. Miss Amulet looks like she=s going to take all the
beating in the Cheveley Park
having won the Lowther, so she=s
a dream filly to have come out of
the sale. I think that will give
people confidence to come back
this year, and they should know
that there is no doubt that some
of next year=s high-class juveniles
are in the catalogue and they can
go out there with confidence and
find them.@
With siblings to 96 2-year-old
winners and 69 yearlings out of
2-year-old-winning mares catalogued, buyers won=t have to dig
too deep to find precocious types, and two that should make
most short lists are Ringfort Stud=s half-sister to Miss Amulet (lot
143) from the first crop of Yeomanstown=s Scat Daddy son El
Kabeir; and Linacre House Stud=s full-sister to prior stakes-
winning Ascot yearling graduate Flaming Princess (Ire) (Gutaifan
{Ire}) (lot 116) (more on her in yesterday=s TDN). They are
among 20 siblings to black-type performers catalogued.
AI think it says a lot about where the sale has come in four
years that now we=re starting to offer the siblings to black-type
winners that we=ve sold, such as James Kelly=s Linacre House
Stud=s smashing Gutaifan full-
sister to Flaming Princess,@ Prior
said. AIt=s a really good filly family
and she looks like she could be a
Queen Mary filly next year; she=s
that kind of filly. As an individual
people won=t be disappointed
when they see her; she=s by a
stallion that=s really kicked on this
year with Fev Rover coming out
recently. I think she=s going to be
on people=s short lists.
AAnd Derek Veitch of Ringfort
Stud, who bred Miss Amulet, he=s returning this year with a filly
from the first crop of El Kabeir, so there=s a bit of residual value
as well. Reports are she=s a really nice individual that I think is
going to be popular and could go to any sale, so we=re lucky to
have them in our sale.@

Whitsbury Manor Stud=s Goken colt | Tattersalls Ascot
Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale Preview Cont.
AIt=s a real feather in the cap for the sale this year to have
those vendors that have been
rewarded by selling nice horses
with us to come back and have
confidence to bring the siblings
to the market,@ Prior said.
Whitsbury Manor Stud has
been a regular supporter of the
Ascot Yearling Sale, and the
Harper family=s nursery brings
eight yearlings this year
including a colt from the second
crop of Goken (Fr) (lot 245), the
leading first-crop sire in France
this season and second only to
Mehmas (Ire) currently among
all European first-crop sires.
Goken sired Sunday=s G3 Prix la
Rochette victor Go Athletico (Fr).
Lot 245 is a three-quarter brother to Kendargent (Fr) stakes
winners Kendam (Fr) and Kenfreeze (Fr) and is the only progeny
of his sire thus far offered at a UK yearling sale. Ed Harper
purchased the dam, Damdam Freeze (Fr) (Indian Rocket {GB}),
for i50,000 carrying this colt at Arqana December in 2018 and,
with the addition of some updates from Kendam=s G3 Prix La
Rochette victor Kenway (Fr)
(Galiway {GB}), she was sold to
Mags O=Toole at Tattersalls July
this year for 70,000gns in foal to
Showcasing (GB).
AI had an inkling that Goken
might surprise a few people
amongst the first-season sires so
I was keen to buy the best
quality mare I could that was in
foal from his second season,@
Harper explained. AWe=ve been
fortunate the mare has provided
us with an athletic colt, he=s
compact but has a lovely way of
going and there=s also been a
nice update on the page with
Kenway picking up more group
race placings under the first dam. He should attract good
attention from anyone that has seen how well Goken=s runners
have been performing.@ Cont. p4

Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale Outs: 26, 67, 113, 162, 164, 194
Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale Preview Cont.
With Showcasing as its flagbearer, Adaay (Ire) and Due
Diligence having gotten off to promising starts and the G1 Flying
Five S. winner Havana Grey (GB) also coming up through the
ranks, Whitsbury Manor has laid its foundations with speed, and
thus the Tattersalls Ascot Sale is a natural fit.
AThis sale has been specifically positioned to offer precocious
2-year-old types, which is exactly the section of the market that
we aim to focus on with our stallions,@ Harper confirmed. AIn
addition, the usual location of the sale at Ascot is only an hour
from Whitsbury which is considerably closer to home than all
the others. Therefore, if this sale is able to continue as a good
outlet for our stock it provides us with a very efficient market as
far as travel, staff, hotels, etcetera are concerned.@
Whitsbury Manor offers two of the three yearlings by
Showcasing in the saleBa filly, lot 69, and a colt, lot 127Band
Harper described them both as Agreat walkers.@ Another he
pointed to in the consignment was a Due Diligence filly who is
the first foal out of the unraced Eshq (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB})
(lot 7), a granddaughter of American champion mare Fleet
Indian. Whitsbury Manor scooped her up for 1,500gns at
Tattersalls December last year.
AShe is the absolute image of what I think the sale is looking
for: strong, compact, and a ready-made 2-year-old,@ Harper said.
AI just hope she goes to a trainer that won=t be afraid to push on
with her as she=s ready to go.@
The likes of Showcasing and Gutaifan represent a strong sire
profile at the burgeoning Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale. There
are similarly three yearlings catalogued by young sensation
Night Of Thunder (Ire), with representation as well from the likes
of Acclamation (GB) and his red hot son Mehmas (Ire); Dandy
Man, Holy Roman Emperor (Ire), Iffraaj (Ire) and Zoffany (Ire).
AWe=re over the moon; three Night of Thunders tells you how
far the sale has come,@ Prior said. AHe=s been a revelation as a
sire and we feel very lucky that we have that calibre of stallion
not only once but three times. That sire power makes such a
difference. Mehmas is off to a flyer and we have nine of those
so buyers will have plenty to go at there.@
As the third European yearling sale on a re-shuffled calendar in
an unprecedented year, all eyes will be on Park Paddocks on
Monday before the action shifts to Deauville on Wednesday.
Last week=s Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale achieved a solid
clearance rate of 84%, but with turnover nearly half of what it
was last year and other markers significantly down, vendors will
be hoping the desire for bloodstock grows as the season
marches on.

Giovanni Parri and Andrea Guistarini with Le Gi=s Dubawi filly
Emma Berry
ITALIAN AND IRISH FARMS MAKE
DEAUVILLE DEBUT By Emma Berry
DEAUVILLE, FranceCIn a yearling sales season which has had
more reshuffles than the British government=s cabinet, the
caravan has finally started rolling in the last week and has now
pitched up in Deauville for Arqana=s headline event of the year.
As it is taking place three weeks later than usual, it is no longer
the August Sale but the Select Sale, though there is a more than
familiar feel to the catalogue, which features plenty of France=s
leading equine families.
Two consignors have taken advantage of the sale=s later date
to try their hand with a debut Arqana draft. Though new to this
particular sale, both are familiar names on the wider circuit:
Italy=s Allevamento Le Gi and Baroda Stud of Ireland. They also
each have a Dubawi filly to sell from just six yearlings in total in
the catalogue by the revered Darley stallion.
From Tuscany to Normandy Giovanni Parri is representing Le Gi in France while his father
Massimo has remained at the family=s beautiful farm in the
shadow of the Tuscan Hills to oversee a draft of 15 going to their
home country=s SGA Sale on Sept. 19.
As the head of Italy=s Thoroughbred breeders= association
(ANAC), Massimo Parri is understandably keen to support the
sale in Milan but the family has also succeeded in recent years
when selling abroad. Notably, they topped Tattersalls October
Book 2 in 2017 when selling a Sea The Stars (Ire) colt out of Biz
Bar (GB) (Tobougg {Ire}) for 850,000gns to Shadwell, and it is the
Dubawi (Ire) half-sister of this colt who makes up half of Le Gi=s
select Arqana draft. Cont. p6

Italian & Irish Farms Make Deauville Debut Cont.
Selling within the first two hours of the opening day of the sale
on Wednesday, lot 34 is also a half-sister to the G1 Gran Premio
do Milano winner Biz The Nurse (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}) and fellow
stakes winners Mysterious Boy (Ire) (Arcano {Ire}), Bullish Glory
(Ire) (Roderic O=Connor {Ire}) and Biz Power (Ire) (Power {Ire}).
Furthermore, the progeny of Biz Bar have delivered three
updates since the catalogue went to press, with the mare=s
Golden Horn (GB) 3-year-old Presidential Sweet (Ity), having
won her maiden in Italy by seven lengths, and the 99-rated
aforementioned Book 2 topper Alfaatik (GB) having returned to
winning ways at York=s Ebor meeting.
AThe Dubawi filly has a really nice temperament and she=s
been doing everything very well since she arrived here,@ said
Giovanni Parri at Arqana on Sunday. AWe took her to be lunged
this morning and she behaved just as if she was still at our farm.@
He continued, AWe have sold at Tattersalls for the last three
years and we decided to come here when Arqana announced
that the sale would be moved to September. When we made
that decision, Great Britain was in a worse condition than France
with COVID and so we through that probably it would be easier
for us to come here to Arqana from Italy.
AAlso, last year there were a lot of Dubawi yearlings in
Tattersalls, so it might have been too much competition. She
was born in February so it=s a good time now for her to come to
a sale. The family is going well. Alfaatik won again for John
Gosden, and the 3-year-old won her maiden well and was then
second yesterday [Saturday] in a good conditions race.@
It=s not just this family that has been going well for Le Gi, which
has celebrated two Classic winners in Italy this year. Cima
Emergency (Ire) (Canford Cliffs {Ire}) won the G3 Premio Parioli
(Italian 2000 Guineas) and Auyantepui (GB) (Night Of Thunder
{Ire}) landed the G2 Oaks d=Italia. Formerly trained in Italy by
Nicolo Simondi, the latter is co-owned by the Parri family with
OTI Racing and is now with Chantilly-based young Italian trainer
Mario Baratti. She is entered in Thursday=s Listed Prix Joubert at
ParisLongchamp.
Parri said, AIt has been an exciting year as we won the Oaks as
breeder and owner, and also the Guineas, both with the
offspring of our young mares, so we are very happy. We are
going to sell a Kodiac (GB) half-brother to the Guineas winner in
Milan and we are very excited about him.@
The SGA draft also includes yearlings by Pride Of Dubai (Aus),
Churchill (Ire) and Mehmas (Ire), while at Arqana, the pair of
offerings is completed by a colt by Camelot (GB) (lot 76) out of
the four-time winner Dweezil (Ire) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}), a
half-sister to Derby Italiano victor De Sica (Ire) (Sri Pekan).

A filly by Dubawi out of Daytona Bay | Baroda Stud
Italian & Irish Farms Make Deauville Debut Cont.
AThe Camelot is a horse for someone who likes to dream: he=s
not a 2-year-old type but more a Classic type,@ noted Parri. AHe=s
a first foal but he doesn=t look like a first foal because he is a
good size and strong.@
Baroda Branches Out The second Dubawi filly to take to the ring on Arqana=s
opening day, lot 61 is the only one in the sale to have arrived
from Ireland, though she started her life in Germany. Bred by
Janet Leve-Ostermann=s Gestut Haus Itlingen, the daughter of
the G3 Hamburger Stutenpreis winner Daytona Bay (GB)
(Motivator {GB}) was a 300,000gns pinhook from the Tattersalls
December Sale and she will be the first Baroda-consigned
yearling to be offered in Deauville.
AWe=ve been coming here for years and we usually sell
through Monceaux, but it=s great to have our first draft here,@
said stud owner David Cox.
AThe timing of the sales all being on top of each other now,
especially with the American sales as well, is difficult, but
Arqana has done a very good job of helping to get as many
people over here as can come. The statistics for the online
facilities so far this year have been very interesting as well.@
He added of the Dubawi yearling, AShe=s a lovely filly with
scope and she=s a great mover. She=s an exciting one to be
selling. Dubawi has enjoyed enormous success with mares by
Sadler=s Wells-line stallions: Ghaiyyath (Ire) is out of a Galileo
(Ire) mare as is Dubawi=s young stallion son Night Of Thunder
(Ire). Cont. p8

Showcasing filly out of Deux Saisons | Baroda Stud
Persian King & Pierre-Charles Boudot | Scoop Dyga
Italian & Irish Farms Make Deauville Debut Cont.
European champion 2-year-old Too Darn Hot (GB) is out of a
daughter of Singspiel (Ire), likewise Group 1 winners Wuheida
(GB) and Old Persian (GB), while Barathea (Ire) is the broodmare
sire of Dubai World Cup winner Monterosso (GB), Juddmonte
International heroine Arabian Queen (GB) and Hunter=s Light
(GB).@
Just six lots later, Baroda will be back in action action with lot
67, a daughter of another popular British-based stallion,
Showcasing (GB). The March-born filly is out of the dual winner
Deux Saisons (GB) (Chineur {Fr}), who is herself a half-sister to
G1 Poule d=Essai des Poulains winner Tin Horse (Ire) (Sakhee),
while the family also includes last year=s Horse of the Year in
Germany, Rubaiyat (Fr) (Areion {Ger}).
AShe is a fast-looking filly and hopefully she=ll be popular,@ said
Cox. AIt=s a case of finding the right sale for the right horse and
we=ve a few Showcasing yearlings so we thought she would suit
this market with some good French winners in her pedigree.
With the prize-money being so strong in France it=s a great place
to be selling horses and it was a natural progression for us as a
consignment to come here. It was a last-minute move to come
to Arqana but everyone has had to be flexible this year. The
breeze-up boys started it and had to move horses around but
they showed that it can be done, and we all have to adapt in a
difficult year.@
Following the French sale, Baroda turns its attentions to
shipping its drafts for the relocated Goffs Orby Sale to the UK,
swiftly followed by those for the Tattersalls October Sale.
Cox added, AWe will also be welcoming clients to the farm in a
socially-distanced manner if they would like to see the Goffs
Orby yearlings and Tattersalls yearlings ahead of the sale,
especially if they can=t travel to the UK.@
G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp Cont. from p1
Left in front two out, the 4-year-old was in total control from
there with the winning margin eventually narrowed to 1 3/4
lengths by the sole closer Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal), as Circus
Maximus faded to be six lengths behind in third.
APersian King=s victory was expected, to be fair. I don=t want to
play the genius, but I was very confident because I could train
him properly for the first time,@ Andre Fabre said. AThe surfaces
were better than in August and it was less warm, so I could train
him harder.@
Sporting these same Ballymore silks as a juvenile, Persian King
registered a brace of conditions wins at Chantilly by a
cumulative margin of 11 lengths before denying Magna Grecia
(Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) by a neck, with Circus Maximus three
lengths away, in a strong renewal of the G3 Autumn S. at
Newmarket. Cont. p9

G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp Cont.
Bought into by Godolphin, he reappeared to take the course-
and-distance G3 Prix de Fontainebleau on fast ground in race-
record time last April before securing the expected Classic
victory in contrasting testing conditions in the G1 Poule d=Essai
des Poulains also over this track and trip the following month.
Denied the Poulains-G1 Prix du Jockey Club double by Sottsass
(Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) at Chantilly last June, the bay sustained an
injury there which kept him off the track until racing=s
resumption in 2020. Turned over by the subsequent Listed Gala
S.-winning stablemate Magny Cours (Medaglia d=Oro) in the
Listed Prix de Montretout over a mile back at Chantilly June 10,
he built on that comeback effort to beat Pretreville (Fr)
(Acclamation {GB}) and Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) in G2 Prix
du Muguet at Saint-Cloud June 28.
Moving back beyond a mile for only the second time in the
nine-furlong G1 Prix d=Ispahan at Chantilly July 19, he made light
work of dispatching of the veteran Stormy Antarctic (GB)
(Stormy Atlantic) there but was out of the first two for the first
time in his career in the Marois on Deauville=s sapping ground.
Coming forward from that slog rather than it setting him back,
Persian King was able to sit on the tail of the aggressively-ridden
Circus Maximus with ease as the remaining quartet found
themselves adrift. Siskin (First Defence) had become worked up
in the stalls as he did in the G1 Middle Park S. last term and was
awkwardly away, while Persian King=s year-younger stablemate
Victor Ludorum (Ire) (Shamardal) again blew the start as he had
in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club. Pinatubo and last year=s runner-up
Romanised (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) made up the four
that were separated from the front duo, but none of their
jockeys could be accused of giving them too much to do as there
were no visual signs that they were under restraint.
Last year=s hero Circus Maximus was probably striding on a
touch too energetically for the first half of the contest, but with
no other pace available in the line-up Ryan Moore had
understandably opted to grasp the nettle. Unfortunately for that
triple Group 1 winner, he was being utilised as a lead horse by
Boudot whose every body signal throughout suggested the race
was wrapped up even before they turned for home with that
comfortable gap still intact to the chasing pack. Letting Persian
King rip as soon as he felt the Ballydoyle challenger under stress,
the considerable talent Boudot had judged the race to
perfection as he so often does and as eyecatching and
reaffirming as Pinatubo=s customary determined charge was, it
was never going to be enough.
Andre Fabre is looking at stepping the winner back up in trip
and, surprisingly, was not ruling out a tilt at the G1 Prix de l=Arc
de Triomphe back here in four weeks= time. Cont. p10

G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp Cont.
AYou can blame the ground for his below-par performance in
the Jacques le Marois and the best horse on the day won today,@
he said. AHe=s entered in [G1] Champion S. and the Arc and all is
possible. We have different options and I think he can step back
up in distance, so we will see closer to the time which way we
go. I don=t know if a mile and a half would be better, as there is
obviously a question mark over the distance.@
Charlie Appleby said of the runner-up, APinatubo has run
another solid race and seen the mile out. We will see how he
comes out of the race and discuss it with connections, but I think
the plan will be to come back to Longchamp for the [G1] Prix de
la Foret and then hopefully on to the Breeders= Cup Mile.@
The Niarchos Family=s Alan Cooper said of Circus Maximus,
AWe have no complaints, he=s run a very good race and we=ll
take him back home and see what Aidan wants to do with him. I
suppose there are only two options now, the [G1] Queen
Elizabeth II S. or the Breeders= Cup Mile.@
Siskin=s jockey Colin Keane commented, AHe ran well and to
the pound of his Sussex form if you compare with Circus
Maximus. It wasn=t an ideal race, as I was left in no mans= land in
front of the main pack.@
Pedigree Notes Persian King is the second foal out of Pretty Please (Ire) (Dylan
Thomas {Ire}), a half to the G1 Prix Ganay hero Planteur (Ire)
(Danehill Dancer {Ire}) who was also second in the G1 Prix du
Jockey Club. Their dam Plante Rare (Ire) (Giant=s Causeway) is a
half to three pattern-race winners headed by the four-times

ATHLETICO IS GO, GO, GO Philippe Decouz trainee Go Athletico (Fr) (Goken {Fr}) posted a
second over seven furlongs in ParisLongchamp=s July 14 Listed
Prix Roland de Chambure on stakes bow last time and returned
to the same Bois de Boulogne strip to cause a 17-2 surprise in
Sunday=s G3 Prix La Rochette. Positioned under some cover
behind the leaders in third, he was shaken into action with 350
metres remaining and quickened smartly in the closing stages to
edge Roland de Chambure third Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) by
a length for a career high and a second black-type success for his

Naval Crown (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) set the tone for the most part,
but was swamped inside the furlong and finished a neck further
back in third.
AWe saw that he handled the track very well when he ran over
course and distance last time, which all horses don=t, and he
handled it very well again today,@ said winning trainer Philippe
Decouz. AWe targeted this race, freshened him up and we were
quite confident that he would run a great race. We are delighted
as we own and bred the horse with some friends and he carries
the colours of one of them for whom this is a first venture into
ownership. He=s a gelding so he can=t go for the upcoming Group

might bring him back over six furlongs for the [G2] Criterium de

Chachnak & his happy connections | Scoop Dyga
G3 Prix du Prince d=Orange Cont.
Winning owner Herve Morin, President of Normandy and
former French Defence Minister, said of the son of the dual
Classic-placed Tamazirte (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), AI am
absolutely delighted--I own the dam and am happy I kept her to
breed. She had yet to produce something equal to her, but she=s
done well going to good stallions and the result is there with this
horse.@
Chachnak had come to prominence when winning Chantilly=s
G3 Prix de Guiche over nine furlongs June 10 and like some of
his rivals here had contested the 10 1/2-furlong G1 Prix du
Jockey Club there July 5 only to finish 13th.
Morin added, AThe Jockey Club was too much for him and the
ground was not ideal for him. He was burnt out at the top of the
straight and it was over quite quickly for him there. We=d
freshened him up with the idea of first going to the [G3 Prix]
Daphnis, but the ground was very soft at that time and we
decided to skip it in favour of this. If the ground remains good or
faster, we=ll come back here for the [G2 Prix] Daniel
Wildenstein.@
Pedigree Notes The aforementioned Tamazirte captured the Daniel
Wildenstein herself and also the G3 Prix de la Grotte, but it was
in defeat that she is best remembered as the runner-up in both
the G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Poule d=Essai des Pouliches. Also
responsible for the River Memories S. scorer and GIII Megahertz

GLYCON SWOOPS FOR LA COUPE Long held in high regard by Jean-Claude Rouget, Haras de Saint
Pair=s homebred Glycon (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) showed why when
taking Sunday=s G3 La Coupe de Maisons-Laffitte at
ParisLongchamp. Surrendering his unbeaten record last time
when runner-up in Clairefontaine=s Listed Prix Defi du
Galop-Paris-Turf Aug. 7, the 9-5 second favourite was settled
with one behind early by a confident Cristian Demuro. Delivered
wide to run by all rivals in the straight, the homebred managed
to subdue the last two of them, Villa Rosa (Fr) (Doctor Dino {Fr})
and Les Vertus (Fr) (Shakespearean {Ire}), in the shade of the
post to score by a short neck and a head respectively.
AHe=s a late-maturing horse who only started late last year and

mind the horse is still undefeated.@ Cont. p13

RAISING THE BAR Boasting three successes from six visits to ParisLongchamp
prior to Sunday, Called To the Bar (Ire) (Henrythenavigator)
returned to his favourite venue to claim a slice of history by
registering an unprecedented third win in the G3 Prix
Gladiateur. Sent off the 17-10 favourite for the 15 1/2-furlong
marathon, believed to be France=s oldest surviving race, the bay
who carries the Fair Salinia Limited silks was held up in rear early
in customary style by Maxime Guyon and unleashed after
straightening for home. Getting to the front approaching the
furlong pole, the popular veteran asserted to score by 1 1/4
lengths from Think of Me (Ger) (So You Think {NZ}), with
Sublimis (Ire) (Shamardal) 3/4 of a length away in third.

has been a little bit more difficult for him, going to Hong Kong

G3 Prix Gladiateur Cont.
Called To the Bar has now won five group races including three
in this race which has been staged under the titles the Grand
Prix, Grand Prix Royal, Grand Prix National, Grand Prix Imperial
and the Grand Prix de l=Empereur. Also successful in the 2017
G3 Prix du Lys at Saint-Cloud and G2 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier
again at this track last May, he was far from disgraced when fifth
in the 12-furlong G1 Hong Kong Vase Dec. 8 but fared worse
when only ninth in the Riyadh=s Longines Turf H. Feb. 29.
Unlucky to be only fourth on his European return in the latest
edition of the Vicomtesse Vigier at Chantilly June 14, he may
have been undone as much by a typically guileful ride from the
front by Frankie Dettori when second to Red Verdon (Lemon
Drop Kid) in the G2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil over 14 furlongs here
July 14. A win at the top level back here late next month will not
be coming out of turn, with his first two tries at that level
resulting in second placings to Oscar Performance (Kitten=s Joy)
in the 2017 Belmont Derby Invitational and to Holdthasigreen
(Fr) (Hold That Tiger) in the 2018 Royal-Oak.

NAMOS SETS THE GOLDENE STANDARD Having tried his hand in some demanding British sprints, Stall
Namaskar=s Namos (Ger) (Medicean {GB}) returned home to

re-establish himself as the country=s leading sprinter. Sent off
the 17-5 third favourite with the money down for the British
raider Sunday Star (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) in the 150th renewal of
the G3 Casino Baden-Baden Goldene Peitsche, the triple Group
3 winner made light work of the task in hand under Wladimir
Panov. Settled on the heels of the leaders throughout the early
stages, the bay was sent to the front passing the two-furlong
pole and was in command thereafter to record a two-length
success from Majestic Colt (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}) as K Club (Ire)
(Kodiac {GB}) finished a neck behind in third.
Namos, who has won back-to-back renewals of the G3 Silberne

fifth behind Too Darn Hot (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the seven-

ENABLE EXITS SEPTEMBER IN GOOD FORM,
ARC NEXT Saturday=s G3 September S. heroine Enable (GB) (Nathaniel
{Ire}), who has won two editions of the G1 Qatar Prix de l=Arc de
Triomphe and is pointing toward her fourth-straight appearance
in the ParisLongchamp showpiece, is fit and well following her
performance at Kempton. The 6-year-old bay has won 15 of her
18 starts for her breeder Juddmonte, and polished off her five
rivals by seven lengths in the all-weather Group 3 over the Arc
trip of 1 1/2 miles. After running second in last year=s Arc,
Enable also filled that position in her seasonal return, the July 5
G1 Coral-Eclipse S. at Sandown. She returned to her imperious
best in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO S. at
Ascot on July 25, winning her third edition by 5 1/2 lengths prior
to her tour-de-force in the September.
AThese well-thought-out plans do have a propensity to go
wrong, but thankfully everything seemed to go smoothly and
she=s come out of the race well,@ said Prince Khalid Abdullah=s
racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe, who will be attending the
Oct. 4 Arc if at all possible. AIt was a nice race for her. She was
pretty much out on her own, which is good, and it=s another
piece of the jigsaw in place.
AI=ve always said she is a mare who stirs the emotions. It=s not
just her great ability, but also her personality and her looks that
have really captured many hearts.
AShe has become a huge part of all our lives and we have to
enjoy her. Of course her achievements have put her in the great
pantheon of thoroughbred stars, but win, lose or draw, we have
to try to enjoy her.@
GLEN SHIEL TARGETS CHAMPIONS SPRINT Group winner Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) will resurface in
the G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint S. on British Champions

next with him and we=ll hold no fears whatever the ground is.@
Glen Shiel=s jockey Hollie Doyle was similarly bullish on her
mount=s chances, AGlen Shiel ran his heart out in the Sprint Cup
and thrived on the slow ground. It=s great that Hambleton
Racing have found a horse like this to take them to the big
meetings. After his performance on Saturday, I=m looking
forward to Champions Day even more now.@
DEWHURST NEXT PORT OF CALL FOR
ETONIAN Undefeated G3 Solario S. hero Etonian (Ire) (Olympic Glory
{Ire}) is aiming for the G1 Dewhurst S. at Newmarket on Oct. 10.
Trained by Richard Hannon, the bay colt got off the mark on
debut at Sandown on July 23 and followed up with a 1 1/4-
length win in the Solario there on Aug. 23.
AThe thought at the moment is to go for the Dewhurst,@ said
owner Julie Wood. AIt is lovely to have a horse capable of
performing at this level again as it has been a while. He keeps it
all for his races, but he is a real trier. We thought he was nice
straight away, but until they get to the track you never know,
and he has now done it twice now. Obviously we would like to
finish off this season as good as we can, but the dream is the G1
2000 Guineas next year. He is a lovely horse to look forward to.@
WELLS FARHH GO TO RETURN IN 2021 MGSW Wells Farhh Go (Ire) (Farhh {GB}), who won the G3
Acombe S. at two and the G3 Bahrain Trophy S. at three, will
remain on the bench until 2021, trainer Tim Easterby revealed
on Sunday. The 5-year-old entire was unplaced in the 2019 Ebor
H. at York last August and was seventh in the G3 Cumberland
Lodge S. at Ascot on Oct. 5. The bay has been on an injury-
induced break since.
AHe is still in training, but he=s having a season off,@ said the
trainer. AHe=ll be running next year on the Flat. He had a little
problem this spring from York last year, so he=s had to have this
year off. All being well, he=ll be fine.@

Tackling grizzled sprinters with just two outings in a maiden and
novice to his name, the unbeaten homebred had shown enough
on his latest start at Doncaster Aug. 15 to suggest that he was
made of the right material to create an instant stir in this ever-
competitive and ever-changing division. Off the pace initially, he
was allowed to creep into the contest by Tom Marquand and
stayed on to subdue last year=s winner Dakota Gold from the
furlong pole.
AHe=s a really good-looking horse and I thought this would be
run perfectly for him, but 10 strides in it went wrong as the pace
got away from me a little bit,@ his rider explained. AI didn=t want
to rush him and so let him find his feet and go round horses.
Ultimately I probably gave him a little bit of work to do, so it=s all
the more impressive to be able to pull it off. He=s really exciting.
It=s probably not his ideal ground and he is still showing signs of
immaturity.@
Trainer Ed Walker said, AHe was stepping into a sprint against
older horses from a novice, which is a big ask and I had said to
[owner-breeders] David and Sue [Ward] beforehand that he was
probably the best horse in the race but that it didn=t mean he
was going to win. It was such a step up and that probably caught
him out today, but he has so much ability.@

Walker continued, AWhere he=ll end up, only time will tell but
you would have to think he will get to the top. He=s got the
physical ability--he=s a magnificent horse to look at and he=s only
going to fill that frame as well. It=s all about next year and Tom
said he got away with that ground today but didn=t love it. He is
ground-dependant, so if it=s soft for the [G3] Bengough [S. at
Ascot] or the [G1 QIPCO British] Champions Sprint we=ll wait for
next year.@
