Message from the Vice President

Prince of Songkla University/PSU, PSU’s acronym: MOR-OR (in Thai ม.อ.) is taken from the original name of Prince Mahidol Adulyadej, HRH Prince Mahidol of Songkla and was established in 1967 as the first university in Southern Thailand. It is a multi-campus institution with the main campus in Hat Yai, and four other cam-puses located in Pattani, Surat Thani, Trang and Phuket with 38,000 total students, 2,216 total teachers, and 1,255 teachers with PhD degrees, 56.63% (University target is 60%)*.

PSU is considered by the Ministry of Education as one of the 9 top National Research Universities and always has been rated as one of the 5 top universities in the country. Therefore, the mission of the university is a focus on academic leadership in accordance with the potential of the South, to link to an international network of universities, and to develop a knowledge-based society centered on multi-cultural and eco-nomic sufficiency, and applying the teaching and research practices into the society and community. The primary mission and aim for Phuket Campus is to make this campus international. Most courses are taught in English, focusing on Hospitality and Tourism (Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism), Foreign Languages (Faculty of International Studies), Information Technology, Computer, Technology and Environment (Facul-ty of Technology and Environment) and Computer Engineering (Department of Computer Engineering). In each faculty, the faculty members are encouraged to get a PhD degree, and it is expected that in the next 1-2 years more than 60% of the university’s lecturers will have a PhD, and as we are a research university, all of the research is aimed at solving local problems, national issues, and creating new knowledge, which can be applied to the teaching process.

I believe that Phuket Campus will develop and move forward to become an international campus coinciding with the reputation of the world-famous tourist destination of Phuket (The Pearl of Andaman) in the next coming years.

PhuketPhuket is one of Asia’s most popular beach destinations. With its beautiful natural scenery, palm trees, tropical rainforests, lush mountains, turquoise colored sea, tropical climate, and lovely people. The island has a lot to offer any student who comes to study here:

Beaches: There are many beaches all along the island’s West coast, all with very different styles, from busy Patong Beach, to the more quiet Nai Yang beach. You can also take a boat trip to any of the nearby islands, or go scuba diving in the Andaman Sea.

Phuket Town: Full of boutique shops, cafes, bars and old Sino Portuguese architecture. You can also join the locals in watching a live football match of the local team Phuket FC.

Waterfalls, mountains, wildlife sanctuaries, temples, mosques.

Just North of Phuket is Phang Nga Province, with its spec-tacular bay of limestone cliffs, and Kao Sok National Park.

Phuket has a very relaxed island lifestyle, allowing you to enjoy the scenery, people, and watch the sunsets on a beach under the palm trees.

ThailandThailand has a reputation for being the “Land of Smiles”. It is a kingdom with a multitude of attractions, from Buddhist temples, to tropical rainforests and wildlife, beautiful islands, and a beautiful culture. Thai food is enjoyed 24/7, from street restaurants to fancy hotel buffets, you can find it all. The capital city of Bangkok is modern, bustling, and with so much to see and do. Around 65 million people live in Thailand, most of whom are Thai, with a fair amount of Chi-nese, Indian, Malay, Mon, Khmer, Burmese, and Lao people that make up the population as well. In the north of the country you will find temperate mountains, plains in the center, savannas in the north east, and mangroves and coasts in the south. The economy is thriving, with manufacturing, agriculture and tourism be-ing the leading sectors.
