A Message from Pastor Matt Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, “God has made us his people through our Baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith.” (Lutheran Book of Worship, Service of the Word) It is often these words, or words similar to them that I say before the Apostles’ or Nicene Creed on Sunday morning. A tradition borne over from the LBW (or “green book”), it reminds the congregation that the words that we are about to share are an articulation and confession of our faith.

Historically developed out of different circumstances, the three ecumenical Creeds of the Lutheran Church (Apostles, Nicene, and Athanasian) serve as a unifying symbol of Christian orthodoxy, and an expression of the faith that we share. Strictly defined, a Creed is a formal

statement of belief, and derives from the Latin word credo, “I believe.” Its inclusion in our worship services marks a reminder that our faith is a gift understood as coming from God through Christ, and lived out in our relationship with the Trinity. The three articles of the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds speak to that dynamic of Father…Son…and Holy Spirit. And while not being found in the Bible, the expression of the Creeds testify to the theological truths found in Scripture. In many ways, the Creeds become a short hand way to understand and teach the Christian faith through the historical test and understanding of generations before us. It links us together and reminds us that we are not alone, but rather joined with God’s Church throughout time.

This month as we celebrate All Saints’ Day, a day to remember and give thanks for the life of those who have died, may the reading and sharing of the Creed be a further symbol and a sign of the hope that we will be joined together again in God’s kingdom. Yours in Christ, Pastor Matt

A Message from Deacon Shari Dear Friends, I just returned from being on retreat with 10 of our middle schoolers and one of our college aged young people. What an amazing time we had! The event we went to is called Free Ride and it is for Lutheran youth of the Delaware-Maryland synod of the ELCA. During this event the youth gather together around a theme and have small group Bible study, large group worship and lots and lots of fun! This year the theme was Breaking the Good News. Our youth learned about turning the scriptures, specifically the Gospel of Mark, into story and telling them rather than reading them. This method of storytelling is how the scriptures would have originally been passed down. Our youth were excited about this new way of hearing God’s word. One of our youth said, “Deacon Shari, it just makes it easier to understand, it makes it more real”. I think making the scripture real for the lives of our youth is one of my most important tasks as someone who leads them in their faith formation.

Page 5: Prince of Peace - Razor Planet · schoolers and one of our college aged young people. What an amazing time we had! The event we went to is called Free Ride and it is for Lutheran

Each night we would end the evening with family time, where we gather together as just our congregation and we talk about the day. The last night of the event, the 12 of us were gathered in a cabin talking and Tim Heim, the college aged chaperone, asked the youth where they thought heaven was or what they thought heaven was and the conversation that followed was one of the most moving things I have ever been apart of! They all had something to say and what they had to say was beautiful and pointed to a God and a heaven that is real for them and real and active in their lives. Our youth never cease to amaze me! Take time to ask them about Free Ride, take time and ask them about God and about faith, and take time to be amazed as you grow together! God’s Peace, Deacon Shari

A Message from Michele Nitzel, Daycare Director

November is a time for us to be extra thankful for all the Blessings that are in our lives. This month the children’s learning will focus on family and friends and on the holiday Thanksgiving. The children will be able to invite family members in to share a special thanksgiving luncheon with us. As we teach the children to be aware of the Blessings they have, we will share in the joys that make us the special individuals we are and create new reasons to be thankful. The POPCLC staff is reminded daily of the special Blessings in our lives; the children, coworkers, friends and family, our health and especially the entire POP community. We wish you and your family a month filled with bountiful Blessings to share. Thanks & Blessings, Michele Nitzel

A Message from Tom Arentz, Council President

Those who know me, even slightly, will never mistake me for a singer. When I sit and reflect upon the gifts I have been given in life, singing is never one that comes immediately to mind. I have always admired those who sing, whether it be as part of a group, choir or as a soloist. Therefore, I responded with some wariness when Alisa and Shari approached me about participating in the Christmas concert, put on by our choir. “No, no,” they assured me. I would not be singing (and you are all welcome for that gift). This invitation led me down a path of thought, however, especially considering the recent work done on the organ. There are those who feel that theology cannot keep words silent between the covers of a book, that it must leap off the printed page, exit the mouth, and fill the air with holy sound. Theology has a voice. The lips, not the pen, are the best instruments of theological expression. Although there are a multitude of books, commentaries, journals, essays and sermons that serve as wonderful mediums of faith, music holds a special place in the church and during the worship services. There are those who learn through books, and dare I say there are seminarians who say they learn as much, or more, in daily chapel services as in the classroom or study. The same can be said of any worshipper who confesses the creeds, prays, and sings the hymns. Faith and hymns, belief and confession, go hand in glove. Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks and sings. Lift up your voices as you are able, and rejoice when the organ sounds again in the sanctuary. Also be sure to appreciate the gifts of having not one but two contemporary groups to sing at the 9:30 service, along with the soloists and guest musicians who performed over the summer.

ELCA Youth Gathering Trip

An update! The 13 youth and 6 adults going to Detroit in 2015 are hard at work. We are raising money and we are getting to know one another as a team rather than a group of individuals. The theme for the gathering is "Rise Up" and is looking specifically at the Gospel of Mark and the ways in which Jesus teaches the disciples and the world to "Rise up" with the help of God. We give thanks to all those who have supported and helped us so far, especially Linda Dejong and Beth Dorflein. Our Basket Bingo is coming up on Nov. 1st! Please get a ticket, come have fun, and support our youth all at the same time!!!!

Please consider making a direct donation to support our youth attending the Rise Up Gathering trip by visiting http://www.gofundme.com/ewvkqo.

In the months of October & November, Prince of Peace will be offering a congregation-wide Small Group ministry opportunity looking at the book, Reclaiming the "L" Word: Renewing the Church from Its Lutheran Core. The book explores some of the theological contributions of our historical tradition, with the intent of "setting us free to follow Jesus into a world desperate for his love, trusting that God has intentionally gifted each one of us with something precious to offer, and the passion to share it." There will be a number of small groups meeting throughout the months of October & November, with opportunities Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday nights, as well as Thursday during the day. Groups will be meeting both offsite and at the church. Please look for the sign-up sheets on the board, or call/email the office for more information.
