A Message from Pastor Matt

Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,

”Give thanks to the Lord, for God’s love endures forever.” (Psalm 118:1)

Thank you to the entire congregation for such a wonderful celebration this past Sunday! It is hard to imagine that it has been 10 years since I began serving as your pastor. It has truly been a blessing and a privilege to do so. I know that Andi and the girls feel just as blessed to be here among such kind and loving people.

In that time we have served together, laughed together, cried together, worked together, and in the name of Christ, have endeavored to share God’s message of grace and forgiveness in all that we do. Through the Holy Spirit, many wonderful things have been done in God’s name this past decade. I am excited and eager to see where the Spirit will lead us in the years to come!

Thank you for being the people who God has called you to be. Working together on the next 10 years together!

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Matt

A Message from Deacon Al Streckfus OSSD

I received a book entitled “The Parables of Joshua” for Christmas. I have read most of the books that the author has written and my faith has been strengthened with reading the words and placing myself in the different places that Joshua has been. I would like to share one of the stories that I read recently entitled “The Parable of the Wealthy Artist”. Joshua was walking through a crowd of people when someone asked Him what is the kingdom of heaven like, and Joshua replied by saying that the kingdom of heaven is like a man who was wealthy and had power. In spite of his possessions he was alone, and had no one to share his joy. Hopefully trying to find someone to share his joy he dressed himself in plain clothes and living a simple life he began his search. During his search he saw that the people were enchanted with their own lives and saw no reason to share it with anyone else.

The man continued traveling and in his extended search he found people like himself who were ordinary. They were kind and friendly and welcomed him into their home. Some extended their friendship while others ignored him. Those who stayed friends with him, he shared his true identity and shared with them his life. When those who previously ignored him saw what they had missed they were beside themselves, and wished they had stayed with him. And that my Brothers and Sisters in Christ is the way it will be with those who, when our Savior comes knocking, see in Him nothing of value, and so turn him away, and continue to walk in darkness. My question to you is this, what kind of person will you be. The one who ignored Him, and walk away, or will you be the person, who shares what they have and invite Him into your home and life.

Peace be with you.

Deacon Al Streckfus O.S.S.D.

A Message from Michele Nitzel, Daycare Director

February might be the shortest month of the year but that won’t slow the teachers down when planning the activities to keep our children busy throughout the day. This month’s theme is “All about Building.” With help from the three little pigs, the children will explore materials to build strong and weak structures. Using “wind” from different sources they will have as much fun building the structures as they do to make them fall. Hopefully all of the structures will survive the forces of nature. Ms. Diane will visit to teach us about dental health and keeping our teeth strong. Ms. Diane is a dental hygienist from Dr. Richard Kline’s office. The teachers will help the children explore ways to keep their hearts healthy and strong through exercise and good nutrition. Valentine’s Day will help us focus on cooperation and friendships. The staff will host a “Hot Chocolate and Cookies” night for the children and their families. In addition to enjoying a cup of hot chocolate with their friends, the teachers will share their favorite storybook with everyone. We quietly wish for just a little bit of snow. Have a wonderful month!

Message from Michele Jecelin Council President

Members of the Congregation: With the new year comes new challenges. As with the last several years, there has been a struggle to end the year with a budget that is not in a deficit. Please keep this in mind as you create your personal budgets for 2017. When the budget is presented to Council, it is looked at very carefully and at times we have had to make hard decisions to cut funding to present a balanced budget at the annual Congregational meeting. With the organ project fully completed and paid for along with the new electronic giving program just starting out, it is my hope that by the end of the year that Prince of Peace will have finished in the black. We have been greatly blessed as a church to be able to help fund many needed programs, but will only be able to continue to do so with your help. God’s Peace and blessings, Michele Jecelin Council President

SOCIAL MINISTRY

Hello Everyone: You all know me, Carolyn Wagner, as Coordinator of the PoP Food Pantry and “Food for Thought”. Currently, I have accepted the position of Social Ministry Chairperson for 2017. I will continue my role in the various food programs, and I look at this opportunity as a way to serve God, along with the Prince of Peace Community. We are doing a lot of good in our neighborhood, and I am aware there is lots more we can do together. I am eager to expand Social Ministry to include more men, women and teens at PoP, and allow them to fulfill their dreams of church and community involvement. So here’s to a great 2017! Let’s get started!!! Food Pantry News: In 2016, PoP Food Pantry distributed 346 food bags, and 33 Aldi gift cards for $20 each. 2017 Food Pantry Sheet for giving out food on Wednesday mornings from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. is available on the Narthex bulletin board. We are asking people to sign up in advance, please. Also, Thrivent cards to buy Food Pantry food would be appreciated.

We discussed the division of shopping for the Food Pantry. Even though we get donations, we still must purchase additional food. At present, Carolyn & Robert Wagner are shopping for the Food Pantry and Food for Thought. We need to spread the shopping out a little more, so it is not too much on one or two people. Becky McIntyre has volunteered to be the shopper for canned meat (chicken, Spam, etc.) and tuna fish. Barbara Nock has volunteered to be the shopper for peanut butter and jelly. Jane Larkin will be our shopper for Pasta Sauce and pasta. We currently need a shopper for cereal and canned fruit, and a shopper for instant mashed potatoes and baked beans. One additional shopper is needed for pudding and jello. We are asking anyone who would volunteer to be a shopper keep the food pantry stocked monthly with their chosen two items. Your purchases will be reimbursed by Prince of Peace.

Food for Thought: PoP provided 65 backpacks to Red House Elementary August thru December, 2016. Currently, we have 6 children who get a backpack every week (one is a set of siblings). We have incorporated two of those families into getting food pantry bags.

Red House Run has requested that PoP provide backpacks to the children throughout the summer. We have agreed, since the children do not have any weekend food programs available. However, we will deliver 4 backpacks to each child once per month. This would be a once a month delivery to 5 local families. Robin Durago from RHR, Mike Kinnear and Carolyn Wagner will do the delivery. We could use more volunteers to deliver. We may include a bag from the Food Pantry each month for the family. Let us know if you are available. Local Relief: The Local Relief Committee met on January 10, 2017. The committee is comprised of Pastor Matt Fuhrman, Barbara Nock and Carolyn Wagner. They are

Page 19: Prince of Peace - Razor Planet · Andi and the girls feel just as blessed to be here among such kind and loving people. In that time we have served together, laughed together, cried

19

currently working on updating local relief guidelines for PoP that were written long ago, and need revision and updating. Lunch Bags to Zion: We have a new delivery person who delivered the lunch bags this month. It is Frank Kozlowski, and we appreciate him very much. Thank you Frank and family! Red Cross Blood Drive: Prince of Peace Blood drive is Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., run by Mike Kinnear. Prince of Peace has 24 of 36 slots filled. Streets of Hope: We learned from Barbara that although SOH is full (16 men), their turnover is “quick”, meaning the men get to move out and get a place of their own, and a job. This is SOH last year at Zion UCC. SOH is looking for a new place for next season. SOH is asking certain neighborhood churches and businesses to “sponsor a bed”, meaning they would sponsor what it costs to support one person in the shelter. Streets of Hope’s current fundraiser is for Papa John’s Pizza. You can buy a $20 card, with which you will Buy 1 pizza, and Get 1 Free as many times as you want! This card is good through the end of August, 2017, so buy your card now, and use it over and over and over. Wow, what a deal! See Barbara Nock for details or visit the SOH website. Our next meeting is February 16, 2017 at 12:30 pm. God Bless Our Congregation!

Congratulations to all who celebrate! If you find an “active” member’s name missing, it simply means that our church records are incomplete. We will be happy to add that information as you provide it to the church office. For assistance, please call 410-866-8766. Let us know of any omission so that we may update the church record and not miss you the next time.

Please remember to sign up for dedications for the new year! Dedications are not carried over from year to year. Please look at the bulletin board near the water fountain in the narthex for a schedule and price lists. Please fill out the Dedication sheet and put in the Parish Coordinator mailbox. Thank you.
