“When reflecting on the passages from the Gospel reading today, I cannot help but think about how we live our lives day to day and moment to moment. Jesus points out that a hired man, who is not a shepherd, and whose sheep are not his own, is not committed to his efforts. The hired man will run away when the wolf appears, or in other words, when things get difficult, he runs off.
In our lives, we get involved in many things that require us to decide our level of commitment. Some of these life events or interests are extremely important and others, well, maybe not so much. For example: Marriage, Children, Jobs, Religion, School, Hobbies, Sports and Friends. We
all, I am sure, have had experiences working with others or participating in these various activities. At times, you may have had encounters with people whom you can tell are not committed to the interest or event.
A sports fan is an easy example to start with. Many people will say they are a true fan of a team and proudly wear team attire. But, when the team is not having a great season, some fans put away the attire and stop watching or following the action. Some even leave their loyalty behind and pick up another team, that is possibly winning, and follow them. In this instance, no harm no foul, right? The same can be said for hobbies. If you decide to not continue with a hobby, who is impacted? Just yourself. After all, the reward is only for yourself. Or is it?
Commitment to your school, or more so your studies, depends on the education level. For the most part, your commitment will affect only your future. It can be comparable to sports or hobbies. But, if you are going to school under a scholarship, or your schooling is being paid for by a family member, your commitment or lack thereof, could put a strain on them. In the case of a scholarship, you may even be left with having to pay back the money yourself.
What about marriage and children? We start to realize our commitment is not just an impact to ourselves, but more so to our spouse or our children. There is more at stake and more people are at risk of being hurt by our actions. Friends are similar in that we can hurt friendships if we do not have a commitment to them.
What is your commitment to your job? Here we have an activity that can fall into multiple perspectives. If you are not committed to your job, you may think it only effects yourself, but this is not the whole picture. How you act and what you do effects everyone around you: coworkers, managers, even customers.
Lastly, what about religion? How does our commitment to our faith have an impact? Is it only an impact to our self? Does it affect others? Is it something that can be easily dismissed like a hobby or a sports team? I think it is safe to say that this past year has most likely challenged us with all the before mentioned commitments. Our faith and beliefs have been challenged as well.
Now if you go back through all the worldly analysis of the above-mentioned impacts of our commitments, and include the spiritual impacts, you start to see a different view of things. Everything about what we do and how we react, comes back to our faith. As Jesus says, “A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” When we commit to something or someone, we are taking on a commitment that needs to be considered on multiple levels. If others are impacted by our commitments, we need to first recognize the commandments God gave us, as well as the primary charge Jesus gave us to “love one another.” We then must accept that we are laying down our lives for others and seeing our commitments through. Otherwise, we are just “a hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them.”
It is always a good idea to spend some prayer time with Jesus and evaluate your commitments. You could not find a better person to share with. After all, He is the good shepherd who laid down his life for us and took it up again.
Easter blessings,
Tom

“I am the good shepherd...and I lay down my life for the sheep...and they will heed my voice.” (John 10:14-16)
When you pray, do you only ask Jesus for the things that you want? Do you ever ask Him what He wants from you? How do you listen for His response? Many times Jesus responds in “quiet whispers” that are not so obvious. So, take time every day, in silence, to actively listen for His voice.

Laying down our lives
The Good Shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. This theme is found also in the story of the Good
Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) On the road from Jerusalem to Jericho, a man fell in with robbers. A priest and a Levite came by, but did not stop to help. Despite their knowledge of the Law and Prophets, they walked right by. Why?
One of the reasons may be that they were afraid. The road from Jerusalem to Jericho is a dangerous road. Because of its numerous steep curves, it lends itself to attacks by robbers who can easily hide not too far from their victims. Perhaps the priests and Levites who passed by that man asked themselves, "If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me? Maybe the robbers who attacked him are still here. Maybe they're hiding just around the bend. This is a dangerous road. I better keep going."
Sometimes we ask the same question. If, for example, I speak up too loudly about the victims of abortion, what will happen to me? Will I face persecution, will I encounter opposition, will I lose popularity if I get involved in a cause like this?
And then the Good Samaritan came along, and he reversed the question. He didn't ask, "If I help this man, what will happen to me?" The Good Samaritan asked, "If I do not help this man, what will happen to him?" And that's the question for us. If I do not address this evil, what will happen to the unborn? If I do not get involved, what will happen to those who are vulnerable, to those who are marginalized our society, those who are oppressed, those who have no one to speak for them?
