by Cassie KibensThe teacher heads over to an art table

stressing the importance of shadows to

emphasize the effect of the chin. A few mo-

ments later he is back at another table en-couraging the student’s work and showing

her how to hold a pencil to achieve a better

    and easier sketch.

During the last session of the class a stu-

dent requests a nude model, so the teacher

complies with a 10-inch statuette made of

wood with moveable limbs that now sits on

    the table.

A month after retirement David Swim-

mer, 67, decided to gure out what he

wanted to be when he grew up. A Clayton

attorney for most of his life, Swimmer nal-

ly retired at the end of 2014 and just a few

months later he decided to teach drawing

to senior citizens at adult daycare centers.

Swimmer had not taken a formal art

class until about four years ago, but enjoyedart from a young age, which contributed to

    the after-retirement lifestyle. A museum

visit as a youngster was an inspiration.

“When I was a kid, I had this drunken

dentist,” Swimmer said. “He didn’t drink

when he practiced, but he had like a trem-

or and I did what any kid would do when I

had a tremor inside my face, I bit him. And

my mother told me that if I didn’t bite Dr.

Jolly, she would take me to the art museum

and show me ‘Hercules Battles the Hydra.’”

Swimmer grew up in University City,

attended University City High School and

eventually left to go to law school to avoid

being drafted during the Vietnam War. His

two children, Ghram, 38, and Hannah, 33,

    both support his after-retirement lifestyle

and so does his second wife, Mary Pat, whobelieves her husband is happier now that

he is teaching instead of practicing law.

Swimmer does not know why he ended

up teaching to senior citizens, but he is

grateful that he has had the opportunity

to work with them. Some of the students

Swimmer instructs have dementia and oth-

er intellectual issues. Drawing seems to be

    a positive outlet for them.

“People who do not have a lot of ver-

bal command of language anymore can be

    wonderful, persuasive artists,” Swimmer

said. “They get to be young adults again.

They’re learning something. They get to

apply themselves, and then it’s real when

they’re through. They display it in their

room. They send it to their grandchildren.”It is not easels and special sketching

pencils Swimmer uses to teach the class, it

is printer paper and old-fashioned number

two pencils. The models? There are none.

They’re too expensive and they tend to take

breaks, said Swimmer. Instead, he uses

various statuettes, many no taller than 10

inches. Classes tend to last about an hour,

as to not go on for too long and lose the at-

    tention of his pupils.

“These people don’t have an innite span

of attention,” Swimmer said. “They don’t

concentrate often, and after an hour

they’re exhausted. And I want to stop

when they still want to work.”

    Swimmer teaches gesture drawing,

which involves a different grip of the

pencil, often almost parallel with the

table, and uses the person’s shoulderand entire body to draw, not just the

wrist. He learned this technique while

training with the St. Louis Artists

    Guild. Swimmer teaches 25-30 ses-

sions a month at about two-dozen dif-

    ferent places around St. Louis.

“I am so grateful that I am doing

what I’m doing,” Swimmer said. “In

    old cartoons, when somebody would

have an idea, there would be a light

bulb that would turn on. I get to watch

that every week. I call it, an ‘ah-hah’

    moment.”

    When Swimmer is not teaching

drawing he is reading or cruising

around on his 1000cc Yamaha motor-

cycle. The motorcycle may have somepower, but Swimmer says he goes so

slow that bugs settle in the back of his

    helmet, not just the front.

Seniors look forward to his arrival.

He is often the youngest one in the

room, which he gets a kick out of.

“I feel privileged that they look

forward to my showing up,” he said.

“Many of them can’t remember my

name, so I’m ‘the kid.’ And because I’m67, I love to be ‘the kid.’”

Swimmer said his older art stu-

dents are capable of learning, though

    teaching new techniques can require

    patience.

“I love watching the art grow,”

Swimmer said. “If a Higher Power is

light, and if everybody has a seed of

creativity, I’m the rusty watering can.

And if these people get watered, some-

thing will grow. And I love to see what

happens. I can literally watch God’s

actions when I see these people cre-

    ate.”

Teaching Drawing To Seniorsfrom page 1-PT

    Once individuals retire they may

discover a newfound freedom in their

schedule with time to devote to hob-

    bies and pastimes they enjoy.

According to research, hobbies canhave many benets. They may serve

as an emotional outlet or a way to re-

lax. Hobbies can keep the mind and

hands active. They also allow for qui-

et time and mind wandering – which

can free up creative thinking. Hobbies

can also serve as a means to connect-

ing with people and opening up new

    groups of friends.

There are many hobbies to consid-

er, depending on physical health and

abilities. These may be hobbies one

once enjoyed in the past or new ac-

tivities to expand one’s horizons. And

hobbies need not be crafty in the tra-

ditional sense; just about any activity

     – even being a mentor – can be a formof a hobby.

    Starting A Hobby

When deciding on a hobby, rst

take an inventory of skills and inter-

ests. For someone who has always

been handy around wood and con-

    struction, perhaps a woodworking

hobby will be enjoyable and also may

work as a source of income revenue.

    Other activities that require the

use of the hands and mind include

    knitting, needlepoint, painting, puz-

    zles, quilting, scrapbooking and cro-

cheting. These can keep the mind

active and improve dexterity and ne

motor skills.Next, consider the costs surround-

ing a hobby. While taking photos may

    have relatively low costs, collectibles,

exotic sports, sports cars and travel

could become expensive. Also, visit a local hobby shop or

craft store and browse through the

aisles. From building model trains to

cultivating an herb garden, there are

    dozens of ideas to try.

    Other pastimes

A hobby can take the form of volun-

    teer work, teaching, mentoring, join-

ing a martial arts class, taking class-

es at a college, and even caring for a

pet. Those who like to interact with

other people instead of engaging in a

solitary hobby, consider one of these

    types of activities instead.

Once a hobby is started, it is not set

in stone. If it doesn’t work out or isn’tenjoyable, try something else.

by Linda JarrettFor most of her 84 years, Barbara

Perry Lawton has delved into the

world of owers and plants, and

    shared her expertise.

     As an award-winning writer,

    author, speaker and photographer,

    she has written extensively on

    gardening and horticulture.

Now, she can add beekeeping to

    her resume.

    Lawton, a long-time Kirkwood

resident who now resides at Cape

     Albeon retirement community in

     Valley Park, thought the expansive

grounds would be the perfect placefor an herb garden.

She brought the idea to Food

    Service Director David Gomes and

Head Chef Mark DuBro who agreed,

    and Lawton started planting basil,

fennel, rosemary and a host of other

    herbs.

    From there, Lawton said the

    progression to beekeeping seemed a

    “natural” thing to do.

“We’ve got a great chef who likes

to use honey, and I just felt that this

was an ideal spot,” she said.

     After convincing many of the

residents that there would not be

swarms of bees disturbing them, they

found beekeeper Spring Shutt.Shutt, who had been keeping

bees at Principia High School for

two years, said her mentor, Sandy

Brooks, set up hives at Cape Albeon.

Brooks asked Shutt if she would like

    to take them over.

Cape Albeon paid for the bees and

the two hives, each of which contain

70,000 bees. During the rst year

bees produced four gallons of honey.

“Usually you don’t get much the

rst year,” Shutt said. “Our bees did

extremely well, so we had a bumper

crop and expect more this year. “

    “Ideally you get two harvests,”

Lawton said. “One in July and one in

    September.”

Head Chef DuBro said he didn’tknow anything about bees until the

    operation got started.

“We were buying honey for our

cooking and thought it would be great

to have our own honey,” he said.

The benets of eating local honey

    are well-documented.

“It has to do with the plants in the

area,” Shutt said. “The pollen is in

the honey, and if you eat the honey,

    you’re building up an immunity

against the pollen in your area. So,

not only is it good for you, it supports

    local businesses.”

Bees travel in a two-mile radius

to nd owers and plants to gather

    pollen and pollinate,” Shutt said.

“They get pollen on their legs,

put in pollen sacks and carry

    it back to the hive.

    “As they y, they create

    static electricity and pollen

literally jumps on theirlegs into these little yellow

bags,” she said. “They get all

    different colors of pollen, and

    that creates different avors

    of honey.”

    DuBro calls Lawton an

    inspiration.

    “We work together, and

    we realized that, with the

    shortage of honey bees, what

    a good way to incorporate

    something here, help the bee

    population and use the honey

    for cooking,” DuBro said.

    Much research is being

    done on the causes behind

the signicant drop in thehoneybee population.

“Pesticides are a factor,” Shutt said.

“Home gardeners use more pesticides than

the big growers, and some lawn services

spray in the middle of the day when bees

    are out foraging,” she said.

    “They get pesticides on them

and carry it back to the box

    where they communicate by

    touch, and spread pesticides

    throughout the hive.”

    DuBro said the hives have

    been “wonderfully received”

    and residents are enjoying the

    delicious dishes prepared by

    DuBro.

The lush herb garden sitsnext to the hives, surrounded

by bushes to give the bees

privacy as they go about their busy work

making honey and keeping the Queen happy.

“Most of the residents don’t even notice

them now,” DuBro said. “They are not like

yellow jackets that go after your food. They’re

only interested in owers. If you don’t bother

    them, they won’t bother you.”

Shutt became interested in bees when she

was a child, after her family moved to an old

    farm house.

“There were bees living in the attic and

between the inside and outside wall of abedroom,” she said. “The room would heat

up and my whole room smelled like honey.

I would put my ear to the wall and I could

    hear them working.”

    Shutt said Barbara Lawton keeps

everyone on their toes, calling her regularly

to ask when she will be coming out to take

    care of the bees.

When not watching over the bees, Lawton

writes for Gateway Gardener and Outdoor

Guide, and volunteers at Chip Tynan’s

Horticultural Answer Service at the Missouri

Botanical Garden. For nearly 20 years she

contributed a weekly column to the St. LouisPost-Dispatch.

Athletes are used to pushingthemselves and stretching theirlimits, but some limits are best notpushed. Such is the case with thelimits posed by aging. While athletesdon’t have to completely hang uptheir athletic equipment as they

approach senior citizen status, thereare steps senior athletes can taketo ensure they aren’t pushing theirbodies too far as they grow older.

Senior athletes must recognizetheir new recovery time. Where asprained ankle might once have beenas good as new after a few days ofrest, aging athletes must recognizethat the same ankle sprain nowmight require more recovery time.Returning too quickly from an injurycan only make things worse.

Gradually increasing warm uptime with age is a good idea, asit helps ready the body for morestrenuous exercise.

As the body ages, it becomes lessexible, which makes it less capable

    of successfully handling the repetitive

movements common to exercise.Focus on exibility and stretch

muscles before and after a workout.

Activities such as yoga can alsoimprove exibility for athletes of all

    ages.Some senior athletes mistakenly

feel they have nothing to gain bylifting weights now that they are nolonger as concerned about building

muscle. But the body gradually losesmuscle mass as it ages, and that lossputs the joints under greater stresswhen other exercises are performed. That stress can put people at greaterrisk for arthritis, tendinitis andligament sprains. While maxing outon the bench press or challengingoneself on the biceps curl might beoverkill, strength training shouldcontinue to be a part of any tness

    regimen.Senior athletes need not

cease their athletic pursuits. Butrecognizing the changes a body goesthrough and the limitations that agebrings is an important element of

    staying healthy in older adulthood.

Advice To Help Keep Senior Athletes Moving

Swimming is good exercise for all

    ages.

    Seniors face many changes as

they move into their golden years

including how to scale back in the

kitchen. While it seems like reducing

food portions would be easy, thoseused to prepping meals for a large

family may nd it difcult. The

    following tips can make meal

    preparation efcient and cost-

    effective.

    • Divide and store. Supermarkets

    are increasingly offering larger

packages of food products as well

as “family size” offerings to compete

with warehouse clubs. If buying in

bulk, invest in a food vacuum sealer

    or freezer storage bags. Immediately

    separate meats and poultry into

    smaller portions before storing them

in the freezer. Otherwise, look for

    bulk items that are individually

wrapped to maintain freshness. Many canned and jarred items

can be covered and stored in the

    refrigerator after containers are

    opened.

    • Plan meals with similar

    ingredients. To reduce food waste,

    use leftovers to create casseroles

or mix them in with new meals.

Broiled or grilled chicken can be

used to make soups, stir-fry dishes,

    fajitas and sandwiches. The fewer

ingredients you have to buy, the

    smaller the risk of spoilage.

    • Cut recipes in half. Recipes

can be cut down depending on how

many mouths need to be fed. When

    baking, cutting back on proportions

of ingredients can be challenging.Search online for recipe-scaling

programs that can make the work

    easier.

    • Cook on the weekend. Use a

weekend day to prepare food and

package it into small containers in

    the refrigerator or freezer. Then

the containers can be taken out as

needed and heated quickly in the

    microwave for fast meals.

    • Organize a meal-sharing club.

Get together with a few friends and

    split cooking duties. If accustomed

to cooking larger portion sizes, do

so and then spread the wealth with

    others in the group.
