Another year has sped past and we find ourselves already choosing pieces of work for Prime News.

Once again we were spoilt for choice and have had to make some difficult decisions. Many thanks to Ralph Tidmarsh and Cynthia Kaiser for helping collect and select the pieces that appear in this edition. A big thank you, also, to the teachers who have put much thought and preparation into the lessons that produced this work in class. I was delighted to see such a range of different genres amongst the contributions and am confident that the children going through our system will finish with a wide repertoire of writing skills both in fictional and non-fictional writing.

Our overall aim is to enthuse the children and get them writing pieces that they are proud of; in the early years, successfully putting pencil to paper is a priority and later, once they have been bitten by the bug, we begin to mould and help them develop their style.

Consequently, you will notice errors in some of the texts; what you will read are pieces that have been planned, written and edited by the children.

I must finish with a final thank you to the formidable Prime magazine team who

have put in the hours necessary to produce the magazines, particular thanks go to Renaud Litré, but also to Kate Lancaster, Jackie Gadret, Melanie Melhem and Matthew Cousineau, for all their efforts and hard work, without which this edition would not be possible.

Editorialby Ralph TidmarshHead of Wednesday School

Once upon a time there was a large group of children who could speak at least two languages and who were learning how to

read and write. Every day Once or twice a week they went to their lessons where their teachers drilled them over and over again in grammar carefully guided them in the ways of the writer. Then they all lived happily ever after. The end. They wrote and they wrote and they wrote, and every time they did, they got a bit better. And they read and they read and each time it got a bit easier. In the end they were perfect writers realised that no-one is perfect but they learned how to give it a go and how to learn from their mistakes and their successes. Some of their successes and some of their mistakes are here for you to read.

And they all lived happily ever after. The End

The Cat that could fly by Lea Prieur P3E

Once upon a time there was a normal brown cat. While he was walking in the park, he saw a tiny blue bird. The bird flew across the park and landed in a tree.

After that the cat went to bed and fell asleep. Soon after he started dream that he could fly. He was flying over the clouds saying, “Hello” to the moon. He saw the stars and sun.

Afterwards the cat woke up and went for a walk. Next to his house, he found a magic bottle of milk. As he drunk it he started to fly. Once in the sky the bird came to him and told him, “I left the milk in front of your house because I wanted to be your friend.”

Finally the cat and the bird became friends.

An Explanationby Eléonore Tommasini P3

How the Water Cycle Works

First the sun heats the water and the water becomes vaper. The water vaper makes it go up into the sky this is called evaporation

Then the water forms clouds in the sky and in the cloud little raindrops or bilt and so the cloud gets to hevy. that is called condensation.

Finely the snow or the rain a lot of things like that falls down as raindrops this is called Pricipitation.

Then the water start all from the beginning again!

Boating at Lake Whitneyby Samuel Hanlon P3B

One day while I was planning the boat trip to Lake Whitney I desided to go on my own. The next day I set of with all the equipment I needed I set of in my best sailing boat. After ten hours in the boat I had seen loads of amazing birds  :  cormorants, greebs……… Then all of a sudden the birds flew away and the waves turned into mini tsunamis. All of a sudden a huge head of a sea monster. Then it nearly bit my head of. I was nearly nearly nearly finished. It was awful. I sailed back as fast as lightning and as fast as I could to the lock. THE END.

Imitating Alexander McCall Smith’s style at the beginning of his novel Akimbo and the Elephants, P4K students wrote a description of their own hometown.

Imagine living in a place where each morning you can here some cars roaling in a big, large road, and with a lote of big apartements all glued together. On the ground, a big cathedral stands like that, bigger then all of the other houses. When you wake up, and you go to school, you can see and here a man screm that his tomatoes are fresh. When you wake up, your mum waching you and tells you to dress up. — Constant Lacroix

Imagine living in a place where on the giant road the song of the cars who wake us the morning. Imagine living in a place where every cars are different collours. Lila Yang-first girl on Mt.Merapi

I, Chang Pang, interviewed Miss Lila Yang, about eleven year old girl who mounted the deadly Mount Merapi, met fierce pirates, fought a monstrous tiger with her bare hands and stepped through the lethal flames of Razvani!

CP: What tempted you to leave home so much?

LY: I like making fireworks, so I decided to become a firework maker!

CP: Why didn’t you think first?

LY/ I did think first, only that I didn’t know about the dangers and I wanted to show I wasn’t a baby!

CP: Weren’t you afraid when you saw the pirates? Why?

LY: No, because the’re a bit stupid, they don’t know how to tie a boat to a tree!

CP: You were very tired when climbing the mountain. Why didn’t you rest?

LY: I wanted to achieve my goal as fast as I could so I could make my father proud!

CP What are you impressions on Razavani?

LY: He looks lika man but when you talk to him, you would think ”What the heck am I talking to?” and Ravani’s choice of workds is a bit well, not stupid but weird.

I, Chang Pang wrote these answers exactly like they have been spoken to me.

Firework Finale by Elliot Jacquier P5MO

“And for the final; Darth Vader with his display “The Star Warrs.” The audience fell silent. First, gold and silver sparks rose into the air and formed a death star. There were several oohs and aahs from the audience. Then ships of all different colors floated in the darkness. Suddenly, other ships appeared and started firing Golden Snakes at the others. Soon after, the death star fired and all the enemy shps popped and whizzed before revolving into the darkness. For that, ther was thunderous applause from the audience. And then, little sparks leapt around the death star and it exploded into sparks with a huge bombangwingdoobalong. Then, Darth Vader’s head appeared. It laughed, and it too erupted into a shower of sparks that, slowly, landed on the water, like golden dust and lit the whole lake and then it disappeared into a gold whirlpool…The applause was colossal. They clapped, cheered, whistled, stamped and the king thought that they too were going to explode at any second.

“And the winner is…”

At the Stable (riding class)by Maxime de RAVIGNAN P5MA

When the car pulled into the parking, I ran to Camila. I was glad to feel the warm, brown fur of the poney I had named after my mother. I hopped onto her back and trotted to my group, Marilyn told me we were going to work on jumps. She offered me to demonstrate to the class. I happily trotted about 20 yards from the obstacle, I galloped as fast as a bullet, I could see the jump getting nearer, 15 more yards, now 10, 7, 4, 3, 2, I tugged at the reins. Camila lept about 1.5 meters from the ground, I could feel the air, tickling my cheeks. My horse hit the ground softly. Then for two minutes there was a long silence. I thought, "what have I done wrong?" then the silence broke. A burst of applause longed last enough until my smile faded away as I heard Victoria, the leader of Amber's group say, " Amber, you will be the Happy Horses next champion." Then I heard applause from her group; I wasn't going to let that happen...

Today I am with Billy. He stole clothes for me, that are dark and rescued me because I’m the best wriggler! We have a bag with no holes, and have to know how to climb windows. It’s fun! It aint like horrible Ratscrew, but I liked when people clapped to me there. They tole me not to say thank you. I ain’t knowing that.

But now I’m with Billy and I ain’t allowed to make noise. Like my rat life! I like it here. Stealing might mean buying with generosity. ‘Hope you’re doing well. I miss you. I sended this card by water ‘cause I ain’t knowing your address. See you!

P5 Integrated BoulogneRain by Joseph Klotz, Mercedes Goethals, Raphaëlle Legendre and Roxane Butlewski P6II

The rain is a gentle lady,She glides down from the sky,Whispers and is almost not remarked, She gazes at those who call for help,And reacts as patiently as a wise man.

The rain is a sneaky old woman,She tittle-tattles on your windows,Loves observing people, so never goes away. She drifts like a ghost and sneaks into a bird’s nest,And damps anything on her way with a soft touch.

The rain is a selfish child,Who can’t behave himself and is spoilt by his parents. He cries in the wind searching for a home.Squashes any trespassing bramble who blocks his way,And scans everything in his path.

The rain is an aggressive soldier. He marches and charges through the vast mountains,He aggressively shouts orders to his companions,Glares at all innocent strangers,He only behaves in front of his commandant.

Description of a Familiar Settingby Elise Bertholin P6

It is and it will entirely remain a classroom. My beloved classroom. My well-remembered classroom. Once you open the silent door, you enter in a whole new universe. The universe of teachers. On the right, the blackboard and a black cupboard. On the left the students, the chairs, the tables, and another cupboard. With four walls, we’re well protected. With two windows we’re well isolated. That classroom is as mysterious as the students inside it. That is why I love my classroom, but, next year, I know I will not see my simple but attractive classroom because I will be going to college. I can always smell the smell of the ink, paper and beautiful feeling of learning invades you and makes you sit in your place each day.

14th July 1789by Amélie Arranz P6I

Glorious, fantastic! How can I say it? It’s magnificent! Me, the only girl in the W i l d e r f a m i l y f o u g h t i n t h e REVOLUTION!

I was going to pick some flowers for my mother when a tall, handsome, young man laid his hand on my shoulder and said. “How old are yu young lady?”

“Gooday! Ummm 16.” “Then come along, there is a change to be done!”

Before I could say a thing he slipped his hand into mine, and gave me a confident smile and hurried me along. I ran as fast as I could for he was a very strong lad and ran too fast for me to keep up.

When we arrived at the big, terrible Bastille. Someone handed me a gun. “How do I use it?” I asked to the young lad. “ My name is Charles, Charles Wiggins, don’t worry, I will stay with you.” He reassured me.

We entered in the Bastille, and there stood three men attached to chains. “Help us ‘yu’ stupid young lads!” said one “ ‘Yu’ on the king’s side or on ours?” said another. We quickly stared at each other and at the end we helped them.

When I went back home, I told my adventure to my whole family especially Robert, the little one, he wanted to hear many more times! Apparently there were hundreds of prisoners at the other end, but I am glad I delivered three!

The Betby Milo Dwyer P6A

Long ago, but well after the existence of time, was the city of Olympus. Its temples

were made with marble, the statues were made with rubies, her roads had been built out of pure sapphire and diamonds. Even though the gods had all these riches and dispiet the fact they were powerful, there was nothing to do. Humans didn't interest them anymore and they were bored with their parties. In his temple, on a gold and silk bed, his right hand holding an emerald glass of the finest and rarest wine and his left holding grapes, was Zeus. His face expressionless and tired, his room messy with clothes, food and plates, his golden crown on the floor.

"Our kingdom is a ruin and soulless," said Poseidon who had appeared in front of the bedroom door. His voice was quivery and old. His long siren body appeared and octopus tentacles which were a beard swirled around him. His crab hands along the side of his body twitched as he came closer to Zeus.  "Which is why I have an entertainment to propose for us gods," muttered Posidon under his breath, his trident in his left hand.

Suddenly colours came back into Zeus's face. He jumped up energeticly and with a snap of his fingers, his room was back in order. "Tell me what, now!"

Akimbo's thoughts while following the poachers by P4C

Rationing : a 35 line report by Joseph Hanlon P6A

Rationing was a way of sharing out the limited amount of food as fairly as possible during World War II. Being an island, Britain got most of its food like sugar and tea by cargo ship. During world war II, the Germans attacked many of these ships to stop the food arriving.

People were issued ration books by the government. Buff-coloured ones for most adults, green ones for pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under five; and blue ones for children between five and sixteen years of age. When rationing was first introduced on the 8th of January 1940, only three items were rationed (bacon, butter and sugar). As time went on, more items were rationed. A typical ration for one adult per week was :

2 oz of butter, 4 oz of bacon, 4 oz of margarine, 8 oz of sugar, meat to the value of 1 shilling and sixpence, 3 pints of milk, 2 oz of cheese, 1 fresh egg, 2 oz of tea, 1 lb of jam every 2 months, 1 packet of dried eggs every 4 weeks and 12 oz of sweets every 4 weeks. People with blue and green ration books got extra.

To get these items, you had to register at your local shops, and had to go once a week (you couldn’t go to a different shop once you had registered). If you were a member of the Royal Family, or if you travelled around the country, you could get a travellor’s ration book (our present Queen, Elizabeth II, had one). When you entered the shop, you handed over your ration book to the shop-keeper, who would cut out the corresponding coupon of the food you wanted. But sometimes, if for example they didn’t have any butter, instead of getting 4 oz of margarine and 2 oz of butter, you could get 6 oz of margarine.

To get extra food, most people – inspired by the poster “Dig For Victory” – grew their one fruit and vegetables in any spare bit of soil they had.

There are a considerable number of differences between shopping today and when food was rationed. Now, you can find whatever you like to make the meal you want, whereas when food was rationed, there was little or no choice. When food was rationed you often had to queue outside the shops, and sometimes not get anything. Today, we expect to be able to buy what we want, when we want and not queue.

Many items we take for granted now, were not available during and after the war. These included : tropical and mediterrenian fruits (bananas, oranges, lemons) cocoa, coffee, rice.

14th July 1789 by Mercedes Goethals P6IS

It was a chilly, foggy day. The perfect moment for a good and revengeful battle. People armed with spears and pistols hurried, trying hard to be silent, towards the great castle: Bastille. There were many miserable prisoners waiting for someone to rescue them and they soon got their wish.

Even if we advanced quickly, time was running out and soldiers would soon be arriving so we struck. People rushed on every side around me while I started shooting at defenders. But we knew we were out-numbered and half of us tumbled to the muddy floor. Fortunately, our souls were strong and brave enough to continue the invasion. We battled and fought well as a group.

As fear was overwhelming us, I decided to use the canons. Our first shot brought a whole tower down with its many defenders. This opened a path inside. We rushed towards the entry, fighting to keep alive. And guess what was in there: the Governor. We did not hesitate to chop his head off. Soon enough, the prisoners were set free.

The Story of Psycheby Charlotte Spencer P6M

I, Psyche, have two sisters who are jealous of me because I had the sad luck to be born beautiful. Actually, you people might think that it’s great to be born beautiful, but it’s a pain sometimes, because people keep on following me and taking pictures of me.

After a while, I was so happy because people stopped that, but my parents thought it was bizarre. So, the next day my parents went to the god Apollo for help, and sadly, he had bad news. He said I was destined to marry a monster with wings, and that my parents had to leave me on top of a hill….

My Love Storyby Mark Dugdale P6M

Hello, I am Cupid, the God of love. My mother Aphrodite is jealous of any human that is more beautiful than her, so one day she asked me to shoot an arrow into the stunning human, Psyche, to make her fall in love with something horrible, such as a rock or a tree or a skunk. I reluctantly agreed, but when I saw her, I

had another plan.

When I found out how beautiful Psyche was I could not do it. She was so magnificent that I decided to put the arrow away and just go home. When I put the arrow away, however, I accidently stabbed my finger with the arrow tip. According to the magic arrow's rules I was now going to fall in love with the first person I saw. That person was Psyche! I had a huge shock and I couldn’t possibly go to my mother for help but I had only one choice, Apollo….

My life in Spartaby Xavier Mc Court P6S

Hello, my name is Xavius Spartakus. Here are some extracts from my day to day diary.

...I am 14 years old. My father is the king of Sparta but even so, I live in barracks just like all the other boys and every day I have military training because my father wants me to be treated just like the other boys. My bed even smells damp and is lumpy. I am not fed very well. We only eat bread and soup, so we are always hungry and I have to steal from the other boys. It isn’t hard because I am the best boy at it and luckily for me I have never been caught. It’s not that stealing is considered wrong, it’s getting caught which is frowned upon. I am very sad because I never see my parents, especially my mum…

Life of a Young Girl in Athensby Chloe Marsh P6S

Hello, my name is Eirene and I live in Athens. I am eleven and live with my brother, Alexander, and my mother Isidora and my father Hypatos.

Today, I went to my dance class with my best friend Anemone. Our teacher was very bad tempered because he had had an argument with his boss. I didn’t particularly like the dance class today; we did the same things over and over again.

Boring!!! After the class Anemone and I went to the market in the main square. We bought some black olives and some feta cheese. Just off the market square there is a clothes shop. I love that shop there are some lovely woollen garments for cold weather and linen chitons, I bought myself a violet linen chiton and I bought the same for Anemone and we headed home. I dropped Anemone off at her house which is right next to mine.

When I got home I was welcomed by a lovely smell coming from the kitchens, the smell of grilled squid. I went to the dining room and sat down and waited for the servants to bring me my lunch and in a few seconds the servants came in with a big plate of squid garnished with capers and beans.

After lunch I went downstairs and found my mother sewing a woollen garment. I asked her if I could go to the “agora” where a man was reciting some of The Iliad by Homer. She started laughing and said: “Since when have you started liking The Iliad!” I asked again “So can I?” and she said: “Of course you can.” So with that I kissed her and went out the back door. I arrived at the agora and found where the reading would be held. I love the story of Helen of Troy. On the way home I dropped by Anemone’s house to tell her about The Iliad. She was astonished. I said: “I must go home now, my mother is waiting for me.”

When I got home I found my female dog Alexa in the garden playing with a ball. My mother ran out of the house and said: “You are late for your reading class, come on hurry up!” I told my reading teacher Socrates about The Iliad. He said it was a very good choice. After the reading class I went to the kitchens to help my mother cook some deer meat for our supper. It was delicious. Afterwards, we ate figs.

Then, suddenly my uncle Zeropatas ran into the room screaming: “Come quickly and see there is a man who has run all the way from Marathon and he has good news!” We followed him to the front door and then we saw a man panting trying to catch his breath. He said: “I have good news we have beaten the Persians!”

A Diary Entry in the role ofMarie Antoinette’s MotherMay 6th 1769by Laura Burghgraeve P6I

Yesterday was the worst day of my entire life. I was sitting in the courtyard talking to the French delegates when all of a

sudden I heard something coming – I looked up and I could just not believe it but Antonia was astride her horse covered in mud trying to hide from the delegates.

I was so ashamed just by looking at her, so ashamed - I could just not believe what she had done to me, her mother, the Empress so I just shouted at her to remember that she was the future queen and that she better have a good excuse. All my plans just vanished… After that I slipped a note into her room telling her to meet me today. When she arrived she looked so young and innocent. So to show her what she did was wrong I began to fidget with my rings and she was just staring at me as if she did not know what was happening so I just shouted at her to get out.
