CLERGY CORNER (cont’d)it, the focus is not on ourselves but on serving and glorifying God. The Vine and Nave are not the only places where we worship. God created us to work and to worship – for us as resurrection people.
–– Clark
Recently First-Centenary, The Scenic City Women’s Network, and the Chattanooga Institute for Faith and Work hosted a video broadcast of a live event from Dallas, Texas called, “Work As Worship.” Those are three words we do not often hear in that order. Our context of the word “work” should be both that which is fi nancially paid as well as unpaid. Most people reading this will spend (or have spent) half of their lives engaged in work.
For some, work is something that has to be done to pay for the things they need and beyond that, the things they want. For many, work is self-satisfying, self-fulfi lling and for the most part enjoyable. But work as worship?
When we accepted Jesus Christ as our savior, we began a lifetime journey to serve as a whole life disciple. We are called to serve Christ through all of our roles in life, especially the one where we spend most of our waking hours. God gave each of us talent and passion to be used in work. Your work matters to God because the people with whom you work with matter to God.
When we do our work with excellence, integrity and diligence we are living out, avodah...the Hebrew word that, depending on its use, means service, or work, or worship. For us the world is not divided into compartments of sacred and secular. Regardless, if we love our work or just tolerate

A Letter From CampThis year you
sent 64 Centenary children to Camp Lookout! This
is the most we have ever sent to spend a week surrounded by God’s beautiful gift of creation. The following thank you note is from a rising high school junior
who has been in The Centenary since Kindergarten. She was selected to work at Camp through the Volunteer in Training program. She eloquently told the story of what your generous gift of camp scholarships each summer means to these children.
Thank you.
Dear Sponsor,I had the wonderful opportunity to work at Camp Lookout for the
month of June. During my time there, one thing I enjoyed was seeing the First-Centenary kids interact with other kids and learn more about God and his creation. Thank you for providing these children with the chance to learn, participate, and explore what Camp Lookout has to offer. One of my favorite activities as staff, was catching the campers as they came to the end of the zipline and asking them, “Was that fun?!” It made me realize my time as a camper and how First-Centenary sponsors have helped me go to camp for 10 years. It is such an amazing thing and I can’t wait for next summer.
Thank you, Chantal NizigiyimanaChantal, is currently a Passport Scholar attending a summer program at Smith
College and studying global women’s health.
Christmas in July Please return Christmas shoeboxes by Sunday, August 11.

First Centenary United Methodist Women are grateful to our congregation for supporting the
Potato Bar Lunch July 28! We are pleased to announce that with the donation of much of the food and labor we have $831 for
mission giving! Thank each of you!
Fellow parishioners: Through your thoughtful generosity in 2018, First-Centenary’s giving to Holston Home for Children – www.holstonhome.org – was among the top 12 churches in the Conference. On behalf of the children served by Holston Home, thank you.
Holston Home was founded in Greeneville, Tennessee by Elizabeth Wiley in 1895. Mrs. Wiley believed every child had a right to food, shelter, education and to be taught about a loving Heavenly Father – a promise continuing to this day. In 1904, Mrs. Wiley established Fifth Sunday offerings, and First-Centenary predecessors were among the fi rst to participate. First-Centenary has a long-standing connection to Holston Home. Rev. Ned Wiley, former Centenary Pastor, was Mrs. Wiley’s grandson, and former First Methodist Pastor Robert Wilcox served as President of Holston Home following his service in Chattanooga. Each year hundreds of children and their families fi nd new life through the gifts of churches throughout Holston Conference. In sharing in this ministry through our giving, we, at First-Centenary, are making a difference!
–– Pete Palmer, Holston Home Trustee

Mark your calendars and plan on joining us!
Thank you & Farewell Recital, Sunday, August 11Jeron Burney is headed to graduate school at
the University of Notre Dame near South Bend, Indiana. In appreciation for the generosity of the First-Centenary congregation, Jeron will present a farewell recital in the Sanctuary on Sunday, August 11 at 2 p.m. Plan to come and enjoy some of Jeron’s favorites that he has sung in worship and recitals. While serving as one of our Chancel Choir Scholarship singers, our church made it possible for Jeron to study opera in Italy, and tour Ireland with the UTC Chamber Singers. We are going to miss him, but are proud of his accomplishments and we cheer him on to the next big step in his life.
