Only when the Tatmadaw isstrong, will the nation be strong

HAILING THE 63RD ANNIVERSARY ARMED FORCES DAY:

To shoulder the dutiesHlaing Aung

Sitting in a slingchair, war veteran U BaHman was watching thebroadcasts of thetraining sessions beingundergone by the paradecolumns of theservicemen for theArmed Forces Dayparade. He watched onscreen that at dawn theparade columns werereciting the Four Oathsof Tatmadaw membersin chorus in the parade

U Ba Hman is now an elderly person. Those who willhave to carry out national development tasks and shoulderthe duties are young Tatmadaw members, intellectualsand intelligentsia, farmers, workers, and national racepeople. Only when all the youth of the nation remainunited in discharging nation-building tasks will it bepossible for the nation, which has lagged behind othercountries in development in successive periods due todisintegration of national solidarity, to stand tall in theworld. Now, the people have passed the nightmares. U BaHman believes that he will soon witness the transformationof the nation into a new one soon.

ground. We will be loyal to the

State and the people, We will be loyal to the

Fallen Comrades, We will conscientiously

obey the orders andresponsibilities given byour superiors,

We vow to sacrifice ourlives for our country, our people, and ourArmed Forces.

While reciting thefour oaths in a low murmur

together with theTatmadaw members onscreen, he had a total recallof his past experiences. In the 1960s

Gunfire shattered thesilence of the nighttimeand flames appeared in thedarkness. A piece of badnews spread thatKyungalay Village wasunder the raid ofinsurgents. Lowering hishead, primary schoolboyMaung Ba Hman had to

stay hiding under thehouse. Ballonkwin Wardin Letpadan where MaungBa Hman lived was a littledistant from KyungalayVillage. However, theresidents were in a state ofpanic, thinking what theyshould do if the insurgentswould also raid the town. The insurgents were saidto be KNDO members. Itwas said that they camefrom Bago Yomamountain range and theywere accompanied bythose ready to rob thehouses and carry the stolenproperty with the use ofelephants. It was also saidthat the insurgents wereKawthulay with long hair;that they had decided thatthey would not have theirhair cut until Kawthulayrevolution was successful;and their hair was touchingtheir shoulders. Maung BaHman wondered if theirrevolution was to burndown the villages and robthe houses of the people.Their revolution is nothingmore than planting mines, launching bomb attacksand firing small weapons

to kill innocent people andcommitting terrorist acts,so the revolution is stillfar from victory. U BaHman happened tovisualize how long theirhair would have grown ifthey are still alive. Thearmed groups that haverealized the benevolentattitude of thegovernment have madepeace. In the 1970s

Private Ba Hman wason duty under theOperation “Ye Min Aung”at a place on the westernbank of the Thanlwin riverin Naunglai Paphanregion, Shan State (North). The platoon that includedPrivate Ba Hman wasstationed near the edge ofa rock mass. At that time, the platoon was locked ina battle with the BurmaCommunist Party (BCP)and was surrounded by theenemies. Beforewithdrawing, the BCPtroops were firing heavily. And the bullets of the 0.5machine-gun and theshells of 0.57mmrecoilless gun werefalling behind the platoonof Maung Ba Hman. ShanYoma mountain range wascompletely covered withcordite smells and ranksmells of blood. Therations of the platoon hadrun out for a long time.Three or four days ago, asmall amount of leftoverrice was given to awounded private. Sincethen, they had lived onwater. They had to takerisks to fetch that water. After fetching water inthe ravine near anabandoned farm, thetroops climbed up thehill. At that time, theycame under machine-gun

attacks. So, they had tocrawl uphill and carriedthe water bottles. Manyhillside farms had beendestroyed, and villageshad been reduced toashes. Having a yamroot to ease his hunger,Maung Ba Hmanwondered when theinternal armedconflicts would end.In the 1980s

Maung Ba Hmanwas one of the troopsthat engaged in theOperation “Moe Hein(12)” that was launchedto crush down the drugsmuggling of insurgentsaround Monekyut,Lwema Ankham, andKyet-hinkhathi hill inthe border area of ShanState (East). Theenemies were said to bedrug smugglers, but atthat time they were verystrong, taking astronghold in borderareas. A brigade-leveloperation was thuslaunched withsupporting fire of105mm and 76mmartillery. The membershad to climb up the rockmountains with nopathways and passthrough the rough andhard hillsides to occupythe camps of theenemies. Before longthey had occupied theenemies’ militarycamps, sacrificing livesof many members. When the 1988 unrestbroke out, they had toleave the camps andwent back to the townsfor security, thus givingopportunities to thedrug smuggler insur-gents to reoccupy thesecamps.

Ko Ba Hman, an old soldier, was contributingvoluntary services at a work site of a railway projectin the central part of Myanmar. Following Mongyan,Methawaw and Marnel Palaw battles, many nationalrace armed groups made peace. Then, Tatmadawmembers, who had defended the motherland at risk totheir lives, were engaged in nation-building tasks.Tatmadaw members contributed their labour to theroad and bridge projects being implemented in thecentral part of Myanmar plus many regions includingChin, Kayah, Shan and Rakhine states, and TaninthayiDivision. He still remembers that some TE and Hinotrucks overturned in the explosions of mines plantedby insurgents near Monelaik Creek on Kengtung-Mongphyat-Mongyawng Road. At that time, it tookabout ten days for a truck to run 100 miles on themuddy road in Shan State (East). Moreover, underthe guard of two battalions, Tatmadaw members hadto repair the bridges destroyed and clear all the earthpiled by insurgents along the 18-mile road section tosend rations to the frontier military camps. Now,Mongyawng and Mongyu roads are coping withHilux passenger buses. Ko Ba Hman was pleased towatch on TV that the distance is now less than anhour’s drive. He recalled his sadness, when he wastransferred from Shan State to Mon and Kayin states,he found that trees, as thick as a thigh of a man, weregrowing along the old gravel road beside DonthamiCreek and wrecks of bridges on the banks of thecreeks due to the bomb blasts committed by insurgents. The regions then were under the reign of insurgents,so smooth transport was not possible. In consequence, the regions were not in a position to enjoydevelopment, and insurgents took refuge in thoseregions. Therefore, the regions were under the threat

of insurgents. Ko Ba Hman wishes local nationalrace people of the states suffering from the evilconsequences would enjoy the taste of peace anddevelopment as soon as possible.

Now, war veteran U Ba Hman no longer worriesabout that. He has witnessed that the whole nationhas developed at the unprecedented level. The Stateconstitution has been drafted that can guaranteemulti-party democracy aspired by the people as wellas self-administration aspired by some national races.

Soon, a referendum will be held to approve thedraft of the State constitution. It is virtually impossiblethat the draft constitution wins the satisfaction of allthe national people. U Ba Hman hopes that it will winthe satisfaction of the majority of the people.

U Ba Hman does not want at all to see anysituations in which the people have to stay hidingunder the houses following the sounds of gunfire. And local people have to leave their farmlands, lands, homes and villages to avoid the evilconsequences of armed conflicts. He wants to see thepeople building a new nation in collaboration.

U Ba Hman is now an elderly person. Those whowill have to carry out national development tasks andshoulder the duties are young Tatmadaw members, intellectuals and intelligentsia, farmers, workers, and national race people. Only when all the youth ofthe nation remain united in discharging nation-building tasks will it be possible for the nation, whichhas lagged behind other countries in development insuccessive periods due to disintegration of nationalsolidarity, to stand tall in the world. Now, the peoplehave passed the nightmares. U Ba Hman believesthat he will soon witness the transformation of thenation into a new one soon.
