They want to drink, but not get 'drunk'! Many people start misbehaving and pick up fight after drinking. This not

This can help you avoid you from those obnox-ious hangovers, preventing you from be-coming a “Stu, Alan, Phil or Doug”.

The best way to avoid getting drunk is to try to limit your alcohol consumption. Now, not all of us are good with self-restraint. Have protein or high fat snacks along with it. It might add some kilos to your weight but would surely help you minimize the ill effects of alcohol.

Make sure that you do not drink concen-trated pegs. Dilute your drink and then en-

Here's another simple step. If you find it diffi-cult to contain yourself when you your favorite liquor being served in a pub, then bring a limited amount of money with yourself! EEK

If you cook, there's a very good chance you have a cutting board or two in your kitchen. Cutting boards might seem like a basic kitchen necessity, but there's actu-ally a lot to know: Which type should you use for which task? Are they dishwasher safe? What's the best size? Setting the facts straight can make a big difference. Here, are nine cutting board mistakes to stop making ASAP.

1 You're cutting meat and vegetables on the same board. Avoid cross-contamination by

using separate cutting boards for meat and poultry, and vegetables.

2You're chopping on a slippery cutting board. Save yourself time—and a finger—by

securing your cutting board before you start chopping.

3You're using the wrong size. To make sure your cutting board is large enough,

place your knife diagonally across the board. If the length of the knife is longer than the cut-ting board, scale up; the board's surface area should be a couple of inches larger than the knife.

4You're putting it in the dishwasher. Pro-longed exposure to heat and water, which

can cause warping and cracking. Instead, scrub your cutting boards in hot soapy water.

5You're not oiling your wood boards. Oil them with a food-safe mineral oil (also called liq-

uid paraffin) or beeswax to help prevent water absorption.

6You're cutting on glass, marble, or Corian will dull your knives with incredible speed.

Plus, they're really slippery.

7You're hoarding your old cutting boards. Once your cutting boards start to develop

deep grooves or indentations that are tough to clean and easy for bacteria to live in, it's time to replace them.

Also known as Chinese gooseberry, kiwi fruit is an oval berry about the size of a large egg, with fuzzy brown skin and tiny black seeds in juicy, sweet-sour, green flesh. Miniature grape-sized kiwis can be eaten whole, skin and all.

It will continue to ripen at room temperature for up to 10 days after it’s picked, otherwise they keep well in the fridge. Kiwi fruit tastes best raw and is a rich source of Vitamin C. It can be mixed into fruit salads and added to pavlovas, and is often eaten as part of a breakfast fruit plate.

It can irritate some people’s throats or stomachs when eaten puréed, dried or juiced as it contains crystals of calcium oxylate. It also contains enzymes that prevent gelatine from setting, so it is difficult to make kiwi jelly unless you cook the fruit first.

Every woman wants pic-ture-perfect, flawless skin. Clear and beautiful skin is one of the main elements

of a person’s beauty. Instead of relying on artificial products, you can try some simple and easy home remedies to improve the overall health and appearance of your skin.

Lemon is one of the best ingredi-ents that you can use to promote clear skin. The citric acid present in lemon helps keep the skin clear by removing dead cells, and its vitamin C content helps reduce dark spots by increasing the cell renewal process. Lemon also has bleaching properties that will help improve your overall skin complex-ion.

Apply fresh-squeezed lemon juice to your entire face and neck. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then wash it off with lukewarm water. After this, rub cucumber slices on your skin to soften and moisturize it. Do this daily or every other day.

Another option is squeeze the juice of one-half lemon and mix one to two tablespoons of raw honey in it. Apply it on your face, leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes and then rinse it off. To exfoliate your skin, mix two teaspoons each of lemon juice and sugar. Apply the mixture on your face, neck and hands. Scrub in a circular motion and leave it on for 10 min-utes. Then rinse it off with luke-warm water. Follow this remedy once a week to enjoy glowing skin.

Jeans fabric is actually one of those things that look and feel better as it ages. Unlike any other textile, denim will never fall out of

fashion, so if you have an old, worn out or out of

style pair of jeans that you are no lon-ger wearing, don’t throw them out be-cause there are a lot of amazing ways to repurpose them. If you want to get a little crafty, there are lots of wonderful do-it-yourself projects using jeans.

JEAN COCKTAIL NAPKINS One of the craftiest things you can make out of an old pair of jeans are some funky cocktail napkins, which can be perfect for a casual get-together. You can customize them for the oc-casion with bleach stamps or you can decorate them with stitches along the edges. Your guests will surely be impressed and you will be so proud of your masterpiece.

Often airlines charge you more for a checked bag, so it’s easier and cheaper to just bring a carry-on bag. However, some

airlines impose weight restrictions on your carry-on bags, and all have liquid restrictions; so before you leave home consider these simple tips on how and what to pack. Below are some of the carry-on essentials you will need:

HOW TO PACK A CARRY-ON BAG

Don’t forget to pack something warm for the plane. The temperatures can often drop and it’s always a good idea or have a warm pair of socks and a sweatshirt handy.

Ensure that your liquids meet the airline require-ments and that they are packed into a clear, zip-top bag – they should include a mini toothpaste and toothbrush, lip balm, hand cream, face wipes and a mini deodorant.

Make sure that all your valuables and electron-ics are well-protected, and that the cords of your laptop or phone chargers are not tangled. Place them in your shoes, in spare sunglass cases or in a little plastic zip-lock bag for safe keeping.

This is pretty self-explanatory, but be sure to have your passport, itinerary, wallet, cash and cards all close at hand.

Aircrafts can get particularly noisy (crying babies, snoring man next to you and engine noise) so you may want to consider either a pair of earplugs or some headphones to drown out the unwanted noise.

Commonly referred to as high blood pressure. BLOOD PRESSURE is the pressure with which blood is pumped from the heart and

through the intricate blood system throughout the body. It is generally accepted that there is a wide range of blood pressures that can be considered normal as variations occur based on one’s body mass, fitness level and even genetics. If your blood pressure is 120-139/60-90mmHg this is generally fine. Vigorous activity can also cause slight variations.

Absolutely anybody; males, females, adults and even children can have hypertension. Generally speaking the largest burden lies with middle aged to elderly adults and sometimes the disease process begins many years before it is actually detected. So this underlies the importance of yearly medical physicals to try and screen for diseases like hypertension, obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, cervical and breast cancer amongst others.

Some symptoms which are red flags and important to seek medical attention include any kind of severe chest pain, continuous headaches of any type with varying response to medications, visual or auditory disturbances, unsteady gait, fast or irregular heartbeat and dizzy spells and/or fainting episodes.

WHAT TESTS ARE DONE AT THE HOSPITAL/CLINIC?We often recommend patients take their own blood pressure at home severally and show us the results as many people suffer from ''white coat hypertension'' whereby their blood pressure is elevated by the sight and thought of being in front of a doctor, truly terrifying!!! Sometimes we attach a 24hr ambulatory BP device to a patient which records 24hr variations. Once this confirmation has been made baseline blood tests include:

• Serum electrolytes, creatinine, protein, albumin

(for kidney function)

• Fasting lipid profile

• TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone)

• Random blood glucose and if high may do an OGTT

to confirm if diabetic or not

• Other tests we frequently do to determine organ function:

• 12-lead ECG,

• 2D-ECHO

• Chest X ray

• Calculating ones BMI and doing a general physical examination

to include fundoscopy(eye examination), auscultating the heart

and renal arteries and lungs

Some of the most worrying side effects seen across the globe are Heart attacks, Heart failure, Strokes and Kidney failure.

WHAT MEASURES CAN BE TAKEN TO PREVENT/ALLEVIATE HYPERTENSION?

1. Reducing dietary salt intake.

2. Regular aerobic and cardiovascular exercise.

3. Limit or eliminate alcohol consumption less than 3units/day

males and less than 2 units/day females

4. Maintain body weight to a BMI between 19-25kg/m2

5. Diet rich in fruits and vegetables

6. Medications: We have a wide array of medications that is

best suited for you!

The most common type of hair loss—alo-pecia—affects a majority of men and a smaller percentage of women from age

35. In men, the typical hair loss can be seen by receding hairlines towards the back of the head. Subsequently large patches of hair loss may leave a horseshoe-shaped tuft of hair. This latter form of hair loss usually occurs for individuals with a issues in the liver, digestive system and pancreas.

In women, typical alopecia hair loss is seen in the thinning of hair all over the scalp, but more noticeably over the top of the head. Hair loss in children are not common, but a majority cases of alopecia in children will see restora-tion over time.

One of the other best ways to prevent hair loss is feeding it from the inside out. Eating poorly causes hair to drop excessively. Avoid eating excessive carbohydrates, carbonated drinks and processed foods. These all cause your blood to be acidic, causing mineral loss from your hair. Avoid unhealthy diet fads that make you lose weight too quickly. For, along with the unhealthy weight loss, you lose your precious hair.

As a former first grade teacher, teach-ing children to read is one of my greatest

passions! In summary, here are some prac-tical suggestions you can implement every day based on the strategies shared with you in this post and previous posts.

Obviously, you can’t implement all of these suggestions with children of all ages, so use your judgement about what is best for your child.0 Read to your child every day!0 Ask your child questions before, during, and after reading.0 Let your child see you reading.0 Look for letters while out and about

and in the environment around you.0 When teaching letters and letter sounds, incorporate as many senses as possible.0 Read a variety of books and make a game out of guessing the genre.0 Have fun rhyming!0 Work on letter sounds and manipulating them within words (phonemic awareness)0 Encourage your child to sound out short words (consonant, vowel, consonant).0 Practice memorizing a few sight words each day.0 Most of all, have fun together!
