Writing: Imaginative Story

Related to our door theme from last week, I would like you to try and write a story (you can base it in reality, or it could be completely imagined) related to a character entering a door or portal they come across. Remember this could open to many things. You might be able to use your poem from last week and expand upon what you came up with there. Plan out your story first, think beginning, middle, end, twists, cliff hangers etc. It is really important to have an interesting plot. Remember your plan is just notes not full sentences.

Medium Chilli Challenge Write your opening a door/portal themed story. Look at the plan you have made. Focus in on setting and character. For help with the setting look at the mild chilli challenge information and for character think about not only how they look on the outside but their thoughts and feelings. Can you attempt a range of connectives, vary your openers and write about 300 words?

Hot Chilli Challenge

As well as a focus on character and setting I want you to think about the style and tone of the language that you use.

Wherever you can, use actions and speech to let readers know what’s happening. Show don’t tell. So, instead of writing “He was scared”, you could write “His stomach churned, he felt shivers go up his back.”

Carefully check each word, sentence, and paragraph. Is it the best you can write? Have you thought VCOP? Remember to use paragraphs, vary your sentence length and write approximately 500 words. This is challenging stuff but, have a go.

Mild Chilli Challenge Write your opening a door/portal themed story. Look at the plan you have made. I want you to focus on describing the setting. Think of adjectives use the senses to describe what your character sees, feels, hears, tastes and smells. Can you also use connectives other than ‘and’ to join 2 or more simple sentences and write approximately 100 words?

Use the story you have created about a door or portal and design a front cover for it. Remember we did this for the 500 words competition!

Think of an interesting title, the size of the text the illustration you are using. Are you going to focus on the character or setting or something else? What would your blurb be for the back of the book? Get creative p7 you don’t have to draw it you could use a computer, paint it, 3D model it or collage it.

Create a Front Cover and blurb Enid Blyton said "Fill your mind with

all kinds of interesting things—the more you have in it; the more will come out of it…. It may come out changed, re-arranged, polished, shining, almost unrecognizable—but nevertheless it was you who put it there first of all.” Reading for 30 minutes every day will definitely help fill your mind with interesting things. If you do, then as Enid went on to say “what a wonderful assortment it will have to choose from! We always speak about the value of reading in improving writing go forth and magpie ideas!

Active Adverbs Adverbs are words that describe verbs. They can be moved around a sentence and can often change its meaning, or they can add emphasis on to a sentence.

For example: The girl ate her lunch, slowly. Slowly, the girl ate her lunch. The first suggests she was just slow at eating. The second suggests she is eating with caution. Look at the following sentence. Move the position of the adverb. Does it change the meaning or emphasis? What you will need to know what is the adverb and of course the verb? Silently, Lottie slunk towards her food bowl. Can you now make up your own sentence with an adverb and then alter its placement?

Higher Order Reading Skills

So, we continue on our quest to revisit the skill of understanding what we are reading. This week I again want you to write down some questions about a piece of text you have been reading. Then this time, are you able to answer these? This week our focus is on understanding.

This type of questions involves the skills of interpreting, exemplifying, classifying, summarizing, inferring, comparing and explaining.

For example: How would you compare Harry Potter to Ron Weasley? What would happen if Dumbledore hadn’t arranged for Severus Snape to kill him and let Draco Malfoy do it instead? How can you describe the character of Hagrid?

Spelling

How is your personal project going? Have you managed to pick a topic yet? Perhaps it’s something you have always wanted to know about?

From last weeks KWL grid, have a look at what you already know. Do you know how you know this? Was it a reliable source? Now look towards what you would like to know. Where do you think you can find out that? Access to books might be trickier at this time. Work through that list of questions making sure you note down where you got your information and put it in your own words.

Have you heard of spelling bees? Nope, not bees that zoom round the garden spelling. It’s a competition in which contestants are asked to spell a broad selection of words, usually with a varying degree of difficulty. There are two ways you could play this. Option 1 online at : https://www.gamestolearnenglish.com/spelling-bee/ select your own level and word choice or option 2 compete against an adult at home. Someone could choose words from the dictionary to test you.
