Here is a story that I found in a small book by Henri Nouwen called “The Way of the Heart,” and it’s a story tak-en from the early desert fathers: “A brother committed a fault. A council was called to which Abba Moses was invited, but he refused to go to it. Then the priest sent someone to say to him, ‘Come, for everyone is waiting for you.’ So he got up and went. He took a leaking jug, filled it with water, and carried it with him. The others came out to meet him and said to him, ‘What is this, Father?’ The old man said to them, ‘My sins run out behind me, and I do not see them, and today I am coming to judge the error of another.’ When they heard that they said no more to the brother but forgave him.” In the week after Easter our parish hosted homeless families and many people were involved in helping to bring meals and in providing a comfortable space for these families to stay. Many thanks to all who helped. Also congratulations to our young friends who this weekend and next receive their first communion. Thank you as well to our faith formation staff and volunteers and to the families of these young people themselves. Blessings on your week!

D o you have a friend, neighbor, coworker, or relative who is going through a difficult time?

Here’s a great way you can help them—tell them about our Stephen Ministry! Stephen Ministers are members of St. Francis who have received special training to provide high quality, confidential, one-to-one, Christian care to people who are grieving the loss of a loved one, coping with a cancer diagnosis, going through a divorce or separation, battling a chronic illness (or caring for a spouse or parent who is chronically ill), experiencing a great deal of stress, facing the loss of a job—or encountering any of countless other life challenges.

Stephen Ministers meet weekly with their care receivers to listen, care, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual support. (Males are matched with males, and females are matched with females.) The caring relationship lasts for as long as the person needs care. It’s free and it’s a powerful way you can help a hurting friend.

To learn how to connect someone you know with a Stephen Minister, contact Kathleen Owen at 919-847-8205x241. Our Stephen Ministers are there to care!

There Is No Need to Struggle Alone! Everyone goes through difficult times. Having someone to care, to listen, to share God’s love with, can help you get through the confusion, stress, or loneliness you may be experiencing. God does not intend for you to struggle alone.

What Is a Stephen Minister? A Stephen Minister is … • A child of God who walks beside a hurting person;

• A caring Christian who really listens;

• A member of our congregation who has received 50 hours of training in how to provide distinctively Christian care;

• A person who is ready to focus on your needs;

• A trustworthy confidant who will keep everything you say—and even your identity—confidential; and

• Someone who will faithfully meet with you on a weekly basis for as long as your need persists.

A Stephen Minister is NOT ... • A counselor or therapist;

• A problem-solver;

• Someone who runs errands or helps with chores; or

• A casual visitor.

Our Stephen Ministers are ready to provide you with the confidential, one-to-one Christian care you need to make it through a crisis or help you through a difficult time.

Walking in Mercy - Living with Mental Illness – So Far

O ver the past four months, we have learned about different classifications of mental illness

and the current treatment options. We’ve heard from panelists about different avenues for accessing care – both from government sources and private sources. We’ve heard from experts on how to assist those with mental illness in finding housing, employment, and other universal needs. And finally, we wanted to know how our church teaching would affect the care of those with mental illness.

On April 11, Fr. Stephen Mimnaugh, O.F.M. and Br. Ramon Razon spoke to our gathering about two housing facilities for those with mental illness. Both facilities are in New York City but they serve differ-ent populations. The hallmark of both fa-cilities is that people are treated first as people and then as people with mental illness. The housing is also permanent which helps provide stability. It seems to make all the difference!

So what’s next? Well that depends on you. The Mental Health Team will be gathering soon to make plans for the Fall 2017 program but we’d like to hear from you about what you’d like to see. What would be helpful or interesting to you?

Some topics we haven’t addressed are substance abuse and addiction, post partum depression and eating disorders. We could have movie nights and discussion groups. There could also be a monthly support gathering. We could continue to highlight local resources. We could have a book club.

But we don’t want to do it without you. So if you have some ideas about what you’d like to see, or if you have some thoughts about what you don’t want to see, send them my way at [email protected] Because at the end of the day, this walking in mercy is best done together.

O ur Lady of the Rosary parish in Louisburg, NC has the main food pantry in this poor and rural community where approximately 24% of the population live below the pov-

erty line. Hundreds of people each month have trouble stretching their income to cover food. They come to this food pantry for help but also for hope.

A smile, a listening ear, and wishes for a good day with a bag of food may mean the difference between total despair and the will to go on, especially for many young Hispanic families in these troubling times. Won’t you help?

On May 13/14 grocery bags will be handed out after all masses, and your donations may be dropped off at the truck in our parking lot the next weekend, May 20/21. Volunteers are needed to both hand out grocery bags and accept donations. To sign up please visit: bit.ly/OLRfooddrivemay2017. Families are welcome!

Needed items: Rice and maseca flour, dried beans, canned tomatoes, canned vegetables, canned fruit, macaroni and cheese, canned meats, peanut butter and jelly, dry soup packages, juice, oatmeal or dry cereal, diapers (all sizes). Grocery store gift cards are also a great option. Checks made out to Our Lady of the Rosary parish are very much appreciated as well. For more information please contact Kathe Henke at [email protected].

Inspired by our patron Francis of Assisi, we seek to proclaim the reign of God by growing in Holiness through our experience of Christ in word, sacrament and one another, offering Hope to those who hunger for human dignity, and extending Hospitality to all.

Through May 1 Jobs for Life Dinners: Jobs for Life is an employment ministry where unemployed and underemployed men and women, many of whom are homeless, come seeking training, mentoring and coaching to help them find meaningful work. We are so excited to partner again with Catholic Charities and the Support Circle Program. Visit bit.ly/jobsforlifemarch2017

Let there be light!

Mark Doggett Batteries Plus Bulbs’

franchise owner

B atteries Plus Bulbs’ franchise owner Mark Doggett assisted St. Francis with a major LED conversion of just about every fixture in the church and many of the school buildings. Mark and his team solved every issue that came up while installing over 3,000 individual LED tubes. The church, Mark, and Duke Energy partnered and

were able to save the church about $25,000 for the lights. During the long life of these LED bulbs, a substantial amount of energy will be saved and that will also be money in our pocket!

A growing part of Mark's revenue comes from business accounts such as hotels, schools, property management companies, and others. As a Batteries Plus Bulbs’ franchisee, Mark is visible and known in his community and networking helps grow sales. Mark and his family have been very active in our church, schools, and ministries.

The Batteries Plus Bulbs’ team at the Glenwood Avenue store is problem solving oriented. They enjoy helping customers learn about the different types of LED bulbs and how they will improve the lighting throughout their customers’ homes and businesses. The team serves customers, performs diagnostic testing on cell phone and car batteries, repairs cell phones and tablets, installs car batteries and watch batteries, and many other tasks.

We’d like to thank Mark and his team for a job well done. Batteries Plus Bulbs has recently relocated to 6812 Glenwood Avenue and their phone is 984-233-5353.
