I want to give special thanks Jim Dove, Peter and Annie Steele, Liz Kaufmann, and Bob Simons for helping take all the show equipment out of the trailer and stow it in the storage locker, and everyone else who stuck around to help break down the show. November 2017

The 33rd annual British Car day was a rousing success with around 100 cars on the show field. The weather really cooperated; although it was supposed to get wet later in the day it held off until the show was over.

Thanks to the club members who worked so hard to make the show so good. Dave Rosato jumped to help Diane Lambert and juggled a lot of duties all at the same time. Thanks to Michael Rains and Ken Smith for doing the layout, Millie for doing regalia, Lynn for manning the auction tent. The PA system worked really well this year, big thanks to Jeff Nickles for having his crew come over and set it up on Saturday morning. Don Kelly was everywhere, including making sure that only show attendees came into the field.

The Friday night reception was very nice. Thanks to Millie and Irene for putting that on, Hamp and Susie and Jim and Jane for serving. Nick helped bartend. Lynn Rosato put together five amazing baskets full of great items that were auctioned off at the reception. I’m always in awe of people who have such artistic talents.

There were so many great cars that came to the show. Ben Nodtvedt brought the Spitfire that he talked me out of last year, we had three Triumph Stags including Steve Norrie’s white Stag. John Bigler drove the Morgan frame, sans body, to the show. That generated a lot of interest. We only had two chrome bumper MGBs, the fewest I’ve ever seen but in an interesting twist had five Lotuses.

The Rolled Quesadilla truck turned out some delicious eats and the ice cream truck did a brisk business. Both of those folks indicated that they would love to come back next year.

Michael Carnell presented his Founder’s Award to Jack and Diane Lambert, who most certainly deserved it. They have both led and supported the club for many years and the club thanks them for their dedication.

We will have a wrap-up meeting to discuss the show and how we can improve it and make it more attractive for owners to attend. I only received three survey ques-tionnaires, they were pretty positive. I want to give special thanks Jim Dove, Peter and Annie Steele, Liz Kaufmann, and Bob Simons for helping take all the show equipment out of the trailer and stow it in the storage locker, and everyone else who stuck around to help break down the show.

So, we’ll look forward to the next meeting, and until then,

Safety Fast!

With another British Car Day under our belts, it’s time for all those who worked so hard to make the event successful to take a bow, a deep breath, and

to enjoy a massage at your favorite spa!

I want to take time on behalf of all of our members and guests to thank you for all of your time and efforts to put together a first class Welcome Reception fol-lowed by a full day of enjoying great fall weather in beautiful South Carolina, Brit cars gleaming in the sunshine, Owners beaming almost as much as their cars, ca-maraderie and an overall enjoyable day at Waterfront Park! Those of us who have worked on many BCDs, know that it’s not something that just comes together in a few days, but rather several months of planning, making contacts, designing the best field layout, strategizing how to bring everything to the show grounds, etc., etc., etc.

I want to thank Brian Smart for once again sharing his incredible artistic talent with the Club by providing the artwork for this year’s shirts and posters. Brian has selflessly given of his talents for a number of years, and I would guess that we may be the only Club that is gifted with fresh, custom artwork that provides a unique look and helps set the tone for our BCD each year.

Hopefully, most if not all of you know Michael Carnell who is the Founder of The British Car Club of Charleston. Michael is responsible for starting the club that we all enjoy today. Michael, along with Gene Gillenwater (member #2) are still very involved with the Club and often keep tabs on the Club’s progress from a dis-tance. Gene has been making the trek from Ohio each year to attend BCD, and this year was no different, and of course, we were very happy to spend time with Gene and his lovely wife.

As the BCCC’s Founder, Michael decided last year to begin giving a Founder’s Choice Award. The award could be given for a vehicle or to a person or persons who have contributed to carrying on the founding values as envisioned by Michael. The founding values of Camaraderie, Cars and Community gives a little insight into Michael and Gene as young men, and I can tell you firsthand that they still hold these values near and dear.

To Jack’s and my great surprise, delight and honor, we were chosen to receive the 2017 Founders Choice Award, and we couldn’t be more proud. If you’ve read any of Jack’s or my Windscreen articles throughout the years, you know that we cher-ish our involvement with the Club and our dear friends who we’ve had the privilege of enjoying for a long time and continue to make new ones. And to carry through with Founder’s vision of camaraderie, cars and community. For all of this, Jack and I say Thank You!

Diane Lambert

British Car Day Welcome Reception By Hamp Atkins

A “Jolly Good Time” was had by all of the BCCC volunteers and registrants at the Friday night Welcome Reception. Those in attendance enjoyed Sticky Fingers BBQ and a well stocked bar with a good selection of British beer and wine. There was very competitive bidding on an impressive display of bespoke gift baskets cre-ated by Lynn Rosato. The reception was a fine kick off to Saturday’s show.

The next page is a collage of pictures from the event.

This is what happens when you don’t drive

your car enough!

tures of the Friday evening Welcome Reception as well as British Car Day. Check out the drone video of the

33rd Annual British Car Day By Mike West

British Car Day went off 28th OCTOBER at Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park without a hitch...well there was that diamond in the rough being towed in...and the crowd was well-pleased with the nicely turned out British cars. The Repo man was close by so there were not a lot of high end cars displayed, but the MGs, Healeys, Triumphs, Sunbeams and Morgans were in abundance. All totaled there were 94 cars registered and displayed. There was a raffle for numerous goodies, a 50-50 chance ticket that put $212 in a member's pocket, and a silent auction for model cars, beer signage, and a lot of books donated by Roger Noyes. The food trucks were very much in demand and the ice cream truck was particularly appreciated on that warm afternoon!

Best In Show went to Jim and Karon Harrell displaying his beautifully restored 1973 Morris Minor Traveller with matching trailer. But best in show really went to the hard workers who put up the tents, manned the regalia and registration desks and made all the arrangements for the show. Our club ladies really worked hard on this British Car Day and they made our day more enjoyable! Thanks ladies for putting your heart and soul into British Car Day!

The next four pages show the trophy winners. Go to the club website to see pho-tos of all entrants as well as many more pictures taken by Liz Kauffman, Susanne Lemke and Lynn Rosato.

Cars and Horses By Mert Fox

In April this year, 8 BCCC members arose to the cause and drove our LBC's to the Spring Steeplechase of Charleston event at Stono Ferry in Hollywood, SC. We had a nice tent, tables, chairs, linen, and a BCCC club sign that was provided. We parked our British cars about 40 feet from the track rail. It was a drop dead gorgeous day. Per-fect weather. Members brought enough food and drink to satisfy everyone and then some. Bets were placed, photos taken, visitors passed by to take photos and ask numer-ous questions about our cars. There was a MGA (Woody), MGB (Debbie), Jaguar XJS (Mert), Rolls Royce (Robert), Land Rover (Heather), Lotus (Henry), and an Aston Martin (Phil).

In October, we ventured again to a different venue. The Victory Cup polo games at Hyde Park in Ravenel, SC. We were allowed to erect our tent and bring a club logo ban-ner to display. Each member had purchased their tickets using the event website to re-ceive a BCCC discount. As the event day approached, the Victory Cup event team up-graded our tickets to the Gold Mallet luxury pavilion. This ticket offered free food and beverage sampling(s) from 11am - 1pm. At this event there was a Land Rover (Heather), Lotus (Henry), Aston Martin (Phil), Jaguar XJS convertible (Rosemary), Jaguar XJS coupe (Mert), Rolls Royce (Robert), and a MGB (Debbie). Plenty of spectators taking "I wish I could own this" photos. Numerous comments and a whole lotta humor and jokes. We watched several polo matches, had the opportunity to stomp on some divots during a break between games. It was a real great adventure.

In November (Sunday the 12th), the adventures will continue with a return to the Fall Steeplechase of Charleston, Hollywood, SC. So far there are 12 members and 9 cars. Tokens and other favors will be there. Bring your food, drinks, chairs, and warm thoughts. We have a tent package reserved.

Come and join us. Steeplechase event emails have been sent to all club members. If you have any questions, contact Mert ([email protected]).

There will be more adventures in 2018 coordinated with the club events planner.
