May 2017

Spring driving weather has been great, don’t we wish it lasted all year? We’ve enjoyed driving the MGB around late on the weekend afternoons, taking a short drive to the Sonic or over to the Barnes and Noble to peruse the latest magazines.

Thanks to all the members who have finally renewed. It does slip one’s mind so a little reminder nudging helps out. All the fun, neat stuff we do depends on the ac-tive membership, so if you haven’t renewed, please go ahead and take care of it when you finish reading the Windscreen.

We had an excellent April meeting at the Marina Variety Store restaurant, it was good to see Jack again, as well as new member Eric. Fred Motter came over from Mt. Pleasant in his 77 MGB so we look forward to seeing him at more club events. Don Kelly is looking for some expertise in setting the pre-load on his Rover V8 rocker assembly. If you have done that then let us know. Michael went over some events coming up in the next couple of months, check the wonderful website for that information.

Diane was looking at another possible venue for the British Car Days, which we hold in late October. The Isle of Palms had expressed interest in us having our show there this year, but when Diane and I met with them to explore that possibility we found the date we needed was not available. We do have the usual spot reserved at the Mt. Pleasant Waterfront Park but it’s good to change venues once in a while to keep things interesting. More on this in VP’s Corner.

The Charleston Regional Development Authority has a Global Business Development Team that has created a Charleston Metro Foreign Direct Investment Plan. I agree, that’s a lot of tongue-tying names. Whatever the case may be, they are cre-ating an inventory of cultural associations, etc., in the Charleston Area and since we are the “British” Car Club of Charleston we’ve been identified as a cultural as-set. Well, we knew that all along but now it’s official. We’re going to speak to them about our club and get an idea of what they are actually doing. If it promotes our club, then that’s a good thing.

The club went up to the new Elliott Remington Motorsport Classic and Concierge grand opening last Saturday, the 22nd. Last Saturday was the Trident Tech spring spin-off car show, which was a big event, with around 300 cars entered. They have created a British class this year, and the entry fee was waived in celebration of their 25th anniversary. More in Mike Wests review on page 6.

Cars on Kiawah is right around the corner, so we’re looking forward to that event. It’s a lovely venue and a perfect setting to spend a leisurely day looking at classic cars. Susanne and I have been asked to bring the ’49 Chevy Thriftmaster Panel truck down, in addition to our MG Magnette. I’ll leave Mt. Pleasant in the panel truck about an hour before Susanne leaves in the Magnette; we should both ar-rive on Kiawah about the same time.

Our own Dr. Tom Horton is on tap again for a history drive up to Snow’s Island, Gen Francis Marion’s home camp where he was tagged with the “Swamp Fox” mon-iker. The camp is about halfway between Lake City and Conway near highway 378 and Johnsonville and we’re sure to get one of Tom’s riveting talks about the his-tory of the area. Marion was an interesting man, kind of reclusive and unlike many of his peers, stayed out of the limelight as much as possible. If you’ve been to one of Tom’s talks you will know they are not to be missed, he is a gifted speaker and a true academic. Keep an eye on the club website, we’ll finalized the time and place that the club will meet for the drive.

Until next time,

Safety Fast!

Hello Everyone,

Time to start some serious chatter about our upcoming 33rd Annual BCD on Saturday, October 28th at the Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park!

Some of you might be saying that it’s too early to talk about BCD, but actually, it’s late (at least in my world)! With May staring at me, I essentially have five months to coordinate and gear up to request donations for the silent auction, interview food truck vendors, reserve the Welcome Reception venue, etc., etc., etc. The month of October is just to confirm all of the details and ensure that everything is ready to roll out on the 27th and 28th.

I want to remind everyone now that this show is not put on for the benefit of Garrett Academy, but rather for our members and guests. Should we have prof-its we feel we would like to share with Garrett will be decided after all of the ex-penses are tallied. There is a rumor that we may have a car to raffle off this year so be sure to follow the Prez Sez or the VP’s Corner for info.

I am sooooooooooo excited and appreciative that Brian Smart has once again agreed to give so generously of his time and talent to provide the artwork for our 33rd Annual British Car Day! I can’t say enough how fortunate we are to have fresh, custom artwork every year … AND … Brian generously donates this to the Club! This is priceless both to the Club and to the lucky person who has the vehi-cle featured! Thank you Brian. I can’t wait to see what you have in store for us and to get posters and information distributed around town and in publications to announce our event!

Please start giving thought to what role you would like to play in this year’s event and contact me via [email protected] to volunteer. I’ve got plenty of room for your name on the list! Why just be a member … instead, resolve to be an active member! I promise that its way more fun to be part of the event rather than standing on the sidelines and just showing up! Let’s show off the talents of our members!

Thank you all in advance for your assistance. As the proverb by English writer John Heywood goes, “Many hands make light work”, and this is certainly an occa-sion where many hands are most welcome and needed!

See you soon!

A Dear Friend Remembered

By Diane Lambert

As Jack and I and many longtime BCCC members say a fond farewell to our dear friend Barry Neal, I can’t help but think about the first time we met. Actually, Barry’s lovely wife Denise contacted me when Jack was President. Denise was very excited because she and Barry were moving from Chicago to Charleston. Denise had come across our website and reached out to see how she and Barry could become part of the Club. Fortunately for the Club, when Denise said she and Barry wanted to become members, what she meant was that she and Barry wanted to become very active members. From the very beginning, they jumped in with both feet and never stopped being actively involved until mov-ing away a few years ago.

Always there to help whenever and however he could, Barry was instrumental in implementing our very first BCD raffle at a time when we held two car shows per year. The show was called Wheels for Life which was an open car show held at the James Island County Park, and the pro-ceeds went to The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The prize was a trip to England for two. Barry and Denise worked tirelessly on the details to set up an amazing weeklong, all expenses paid trip to England. Tickets sold for $25 and sold out quickly. Several members bought multiple tickets, but it was one lucky person in California who purchased just one ticket and won.

For many years, Barry and Denise arranged for us to display our cars at the Summerville Flow-ertown Festival and then hosted many great after parties at their home. They were always there to volunteer whenever and however needed to make the Club interesting, vibrant and success-ful. As Treasurer for several years, Barry played an important role, not simply keeping us on the straight and narrow financially, but also helping with budgeting for our annual BCDs and tracking our show successes.

We enjoyed their participation in the Charleston and Folly Beach parades where Barry and Denise would decorate their beautiful 1952 MG TD lovingly named Matilda, which came from Australia. Through the years, they enjoyed the parade decorating gatherings at Jack and Wen-dy Tripps’ home, Bobby and Jenelle Grooms’ home and then Bob and Jackie Lane’s home along with their friends in the BCCC. In addition to the TD Barry and Denise had a beautiful E-Type, and MG A and an MG B to round out their collection.

Ever the proper English Gentleman, Barry was a very kind man who had positive things to say about everyone, and generously offered his time, knowledge and a helping hand to all who might need them. Barry also shared his delightful, reserved sense of humor and enjoyed a good laugh. He loved to share, and we loved to hear the great life stories Barry would tell us about his work and travels, and he was always interesting, but never boastful.

Talking with Denise, I understand that she may be moving out of state, but her friends in the BCCC want her to know that she has a lifetime membership, and that we will miss both Barry and she as the wonderful, active members they have been for many years and appreciate their many contributions as members and friends.

April Events By Mike West with commentary by WH Charnock

April 22 saw eighteen British Cars, including what must be the world's largest Rolls Royce, at Elliot Remington's Garage off Clements Ferry Road near Cainhoy. Remington has a full service car business from storage to detailing and from service to conci-erge. The event was nicely catered and the attendees got a full description of all ser-vices that could be provided. There was an interactive driving simulator and some virtual reality glasses to entertain the crowd while most of us were ogling Ken Smith's beauti-fully detailed Jag on the showroom amongst the Porchii, Audii, and Bentlii !!

"We are the British Brotherhood, our cars are fairly old,

Each thing is in its place, while drivers sit in the cold.

Driving our machinery behind an aero screen,

While little boys cry "Racer" and their daddies wax obscene!

We are the British Brotherhood, our cars are hell to run,

The moderns get the spares they need, but we get all the fun!

No automatic nonsense, no streamlined tin for us,

And if we break a crankshaft, we can always take a bus!"

And then the British Brotherhood moved on a week later to the Trident Tech 25th An-nual Spring Spin-off Car Show held at their North Charleston Campus. There were about thirty classes and judging was not by popular vote, but by a team of automotive experts skilled in restoration as well as design and repair of cars. There were special awards to TTC students in Automotive Engineering with grades well over 3.6 and awards for club participation . There were about 320 cars registered and the range was from Ford Model T's to brand new Alfa Romeos and Porsches. Mustangs and VWs, Corvettes and muscle cars took the field in this very family-oriented car show. Rick Hendricks Au-tomotive paid ALL the fees including entry, trophy and giveaway costs while South Caro-lina Federal provided unique screwdrivers and Tee Shirts for the attendees. The BCCC did not come close to taking the Participation Award and the organizers may not have a British Car class next year if so few British Cars show up. Caveat Emptor !!!

"The badge on the bar on the front of your car,

Is today a thought mediocre,

And if you have the passion to be in the fashion,

You must wear it on blazer or choker!

For the girls it looks better on headscarf or sweater,

And if she is up to the minute,

The tattoo on her neck, tells the name of the car,

Beloved of the driver within it!"

Watch the Windscreen and the website for other events and car shows and once again many thanks to our event coordinator and the many folks that participate in BCCC events!

May 1st—British May Day

The first day of the month of May is known as May Day. It is the time of year when warmer weather be-gins and flowers and trees start to blossom. It is said to be a time of love and romance. It is when people celebrate the coming of summer with lots of different customs that are expressions of joy and hope after a long winter.

Maypole Dancing - a traditional dance at this time of year

The beginning of Summer Although summer does not officially begin until June, May Day marks its begin-ning. May Day celebrations have been carried out in England for over 2000 years. May Day Bank Holiday The month of May has many traditions and celebrations. For the convenience of the general public, many May Day activities have now been moved to the new May Day holiday (from 1978) on the first Monday of the month. This Monday is a bank holiday, a day off school and work. Many of the May Day celebrations take place at the weekend as well as on the 'May Day' Monday. The weekend is know as bank holiday weekend because it comes with the extra day holiday on the Monday.

Steeplechase of Charleston By Mert Fox

Seven members of the BCCC (Mert, Woody, Debbie, Phil & Rosemary, Henry and Heather) attended the Steeplechase of Charleston event on Saturday, April 8th, The Plantation at Stono Ferry. There were 6 vehicles (Jaguar XJS coupe, Land Rover, Lotus Evora, Aston Martin Vantage, MGA, and MGB) displayed in the Vendor Village area. We had a reserved spot with tent, tables, chairs, linens along with a great view of the race track.

The BCCC had been invited by the Bruno event team from Birmingham, Al. This was the first Spring steeplechase to be held in the Charleston area. Coordination had been ar-ranged and our group was extremely pleased with the results.

We parked the cars adjacent to the tent. Then laid out the food and beverages for all to partake. The club logo banner was hung. A group photo was taken and the day began.

The weather was postcard perfect. No clouds, light breeze. Just superb. The only an-noyance was the no-see-ms. Sunscreen lotion was a must.

There were 5 races in groups of 6 to 8 horses. Bets were made among the group. Every-one became a winner during the day. Between the races, the crowd would visit the ven-dor area. We were available for any questions. Numerous photos were taken with hopes of maybe, someday, such a car could be theirs.

We have been invited to return on Novem-ber 12th (Sunday) to participate in the Fall Steeplechase of Charleston. Our group will definitely be there. Hopefully more BCCC members will participate.

The entire event was just “Spot On”.

Royal Oak Day—May 29th Royal Oak Day (Oak Apple Day) was a public holiday

celebrated in England on 29 May to commemorate the

restoration of the English monarchy, in May 1660.

“Parliament had ordered the 29th of May, the King’s birth-

day, to be forever kept as a day of thanksgiving for our

redemption from tyranny and the King’s return to his Gov-

ernment, he returning to London that day."

Samuel Pepys’s Diary 1st June 1660 Commonwealth of England

The English Civil War 1642-1649 was fought between the

royalist forces loyal to King Charles I and the parliamen-

tarians led by Oliver Cromwell. The Royalist were defeated at the Battle of Naseby in

1645 and Charles I was caught and executed on 30 January 1649. Cromwell declared Brit-

ain a republic 'The Commonwealth' and went on to become it's Lord Protector. Following

his death in 1658 Cromwell was succeeded briefly by his son Richard before the monarchy

was restored and Charles II became king on 29 May 1660.

How was Oak Apple Day marked?

Oak Apple Day was a time for dancing and parties. To show their support for the monar-

chy, people wore sprigs of oak leaves or a sprig with an oak apple on (gall produced in oak

buds by wasps). On 29 May, children would challenge each other to show their oak sprigs

or apples, and those not wearing one would face some form of punishment, varying from

one place to another.

“Pinch-Bum-Day" - a pinch on the bottom

"Nettle Day" - whipping with nettles

"The wise boy wore his oak leaves, armed himselves (sic) with a stinging nettle and car-

ried a few dock leaves for first aid just in case"

Bibliography of Nottinghamshire Folk Plays & Related Customs In some areas it was necessary to wear the oak sprig only until noon; after that one was

safe. In the 1890s many railway engines were decorated with boughs of oak on 29 May.

Why was the Oak chosen to commemorate the return of the monar-

chy?

It is said that King Charles' life was saved after the battle of Worcester in 1651, when

he escaped from the Roundhead army by hiding in an oak tree in the grounds of Boscobel

House in Staffordshire.

The Oak Tree is a symbol of England The image of the Royal Oak can be pubs and hotels signs, on stamps and also on coins (£1). There have also been numerous naval ships, a train and a London underground station named ‘The Royal Oak’.

Easter Lamb with Peas

Ingredients • 1kg/2lb 4oz boned lamb shoulder, cut into large chunks • 150ml/5fl oz extra virgin olive oil • 2 onions, roughly chopped • 1 large carrot, sliced • 1 celery stalk, roughly chopped • 5 garlic cloves, crushed • ½ x 50g/2oz tin anchovy fillets • handful thyme sprigs • 1 red chilli, sliced • 250ml/9fl oz white wine • 25ml/1fl oz white wine vinegar • 250g/9oz fresh or frozen peas • 400g/14oz potatoes, cut into quarters • 200g/7oz cherry tomatoes, halved • salt and freshly ground black pepper • 6 portions fresh bread, to serve

Method 1. Season the lamb chunks with salt and black pepper. Set aside. 2. Heat the olive oil in a large lidded pan and fry the onions, carrot and celery

for 4–5 minutes, or until softened. Add the garlic, anchovies, thyme and chilli, and continue to cook, stirring, until the anchovies have almost dissolved into the oil. Add the lamb chunks and fry for a further 4–5 minutes, or until browned all over.

3. Stir in the wine and continue to cook until the volume of the liquid has reduced by half, then add the vinegar. Reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer gently for 20 minutes.

4. Add the peas, potatoes and tomatoes, cover again and continue to cook for about an hour, until the sauce has reduced by half.

5. Serve hot with plenty of bread to mop up the sauce.

The secret of success in this recipe is to leave the lamb to cook on a very low heat. Serve this springtime dish with plenty of bread to mop up the sauce.
