The field school was conceived by Studio Carolina Izzo, in close collaboration with the Museum and Heritage Studies programme at Victoria University of Wellington and the Italian Ministry of National Heritage and Cultural Activities. The field school will focus on the study and analysis of the condition of the porcelain sculptures at Capodimonte Museum in Naples as well as taking part in the hands-on restoration of these objects. Thanks to Carolina’s contacts and experience participants will also have privileged access to other museums - notably the famous Opificio delle Pietre Dure and the prestigious restoration school Palazzo Spinelli, as well as visiting selected museums in Florence. A day trip to Pompeii or Herculaneum and their conservation laboratories will provide a behind-the- scenes look at conservation work at these historical sites. We will also visit other specialised conservation laboratories, meet scientists and top museum collection managers, as well as discuss experiences and challenges with private conservators of museums not accessible to the public. Target audience The tour is aimed at providing conservators, registrars, collection managers, museum curators, architects and selected students with specialist training in preventive conservation, from theory to practice. It will be of interest to a range of participants at different levels from experienced conservators and museum staff to students with lile prior experience. Objectives The objective of the field school is to learn about different ways of preserving, conserving and displaying heritage objects. You will study how professionals in the museum sector interact with works of historical importance. This is a unique opportunity for you to: learn about, and apply, professional conservation techniques thoroughly examine works displayed or stored in a variety of locations engage in a constructive debate on the problems and issues related to preventive conservation and the preservation of historical objects and other artifacts in museums, churches and other exclusive locations. The programme is also a fantastic opportunity for exchanging and sharing knowledge with the group and contributing to the Museums of Naples. This field school may, with approval, be undertaken in conjunction with a 15 point course: MHST524: Special Topic: Study Tour. The programme will include visits to see workshops, laboratories, public and private museums and professional conservation activities. The primary locations of the tour will be the Capodimonte Museum and the Pignatelli Museum in Naples, Italy. Under the direction of Carolina Izzo and the guidance of selected Italian experts supervised by the museums’ head of conservation, participants will have a unique professional experience in the home of conservation. Activities include a visit to Villa San Michele on the island of Capri. The ruins of this ancient Roman imperial villa were preserved by Axel Munthe and now showcase exceptional pieces collected by the Munthe family between 1896 and 1910. An additional activity will be a visit to the excavated city of Pompeii or Herculaneum and their conservation laboratories, which will also provide insight into various techniques of ongoing maintenance of historical artifacts. The programme will also allow for some free time where the participants can explore markets, sample the local cuisine, shop, or sit in a café in a piazza and observe Italian style and the customs of this region. C ancell ationsVictoria University reserves the right to change the proposed itinerary if necessary and reserves the right to postpone or cancel the workshop due to unforseen circumstances and to refuse or cancel any booking.

Should this occur, any payments made will be refunded.

If you withdraw after booking and before the payment of the second deposit required by Friday 29 July 2016 you will be required to pay a full withdrawal fee of NZ$1,000.

Withdrawal before the tour will involve the loss of the full amount paid. You are strongly advised to take out travel insurance at the time of your booking to cover against cancellation prior to departure, and any unexpected health or other incidents during your trip.

About the s tudy tour direc torCarolina Izzo studied conservation in Florence and worked for almost two decades for the Italian Ministry of Culture restoring damaged artifacts from the 1981 earthquake in Irpinia, Italy. She has worked as Conservator of Paintings

at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa for many years. In 2015 Studio Carolina Izzo was the winner of the Craftsmanship Award in the 2015 Interior Awards for the restoration work on the painted dome at Christchurch’s Isaac Theatre Royal.

Monday 14 November to Thursday 17 NovemberPignatelli Museum - Naples Workshop

The tour continues at the Pignatelli Museum. This area was very popular during the neoclassic period when foreign tourists came to visit and discuss conservation and treatment issues. The building contains the original furniture, as well as numerous other features including a room with ornate walls decorated with gilded leather and silk. The villa was built in the 1820s by Sir Ferdinand Acton. The conservators and curators will show us some interesting artifacts and discuss their history. We will explore in detail the elegant bronze vases, their gilding technique and the cleaning process.

Friday 18 DecemberWorkshop

Visit to conservation sites located in churches and heritage buildings and meet with conservator colleagues.

S aturday 19 and Sunday 20 NovemberFree days

Monday 2 1 NovemberFrom the port of Naples you will take a ferry to Capri and visit the Villa Axel Munthe in Anacapri. Here you will have the opportunity to view the conservation treatments performed by Carolina and colleagues and engage in discussion about the preservation of objects displayed in difficult climates. We will then visit Tiberio’s villa and the 14th-century Charterhouse of S. Giacomo.

Tuesday 2 2 to Friday 2 5 November Meet in Florence (via your own travel/transportation arrangements - not included in the tour fee).

Applying for the tourPlaces on the tour are limited and are granted at the discretion of the tour director.

• To apply for a place on this tour please fill out the form on our website www.victoria.ac.nz/studytours.

• You will then be emailed a questionnaire to complete in support of your application.

• We will let you know whether or not you have accepted for the tour - this should be within 14 days of receiving your questionnaire.

• To secure your place on the tour you will then need to pay the initial NZ$1,000 deposit.

Applications for the tour close on Friday 24 June.
