Once past security they were given a VIP tour of the kitchens by Wayne Mayes (Sous Chef) where they were surprised to hear that they serve over 500 meals a day. Next it was to look at the logistical side of things looking at where everything starts, in the form of the delivery and storage areas and then where it finishes in the form of the recycling plant. We were all very surprised to see how ‘green’ they were, recycling over 80% of all waste including the food waste which is turned into fertiliser and used around the grounds. Lastly it was a tour of the restaurant and a Cup Cake making competition with Julie Cottom (Chef de Partie); surprisingly this was a big hit! Howard Rose, Funding & Publicity Manager and Cooking Club coordinator said: “A huge thank you to Karen Crawford for allowing us to visit and thank you to all of her team at Network Rail for making us so welcome. The children enjoyed the day and had a real insight into how a professional hospitality & conferencing facility runs. This is another example of how a local business can work with schools to enhance pupils learning” Photo – Y6 Cooking Club
