Embassy ladies host Muslim Women Association Event
Today (13 June 2013) wives of Bangladesh diplomats and Muslim Women’s
Association' organized a discussion followed by a cultural program at the Bangabandhu
auditorium of the Embassy. The Muslim Women’s Association is a Washington, DC based non-
profit organization founded in 1960. Since its foundation, it is playing an important role to
promote values and culture of Muslim majority countries in the USA. More than sixty
participants including wives of Ambassadors of different Muslim majority countries, wives of
foreign diplomats, and representatives from cultural organizations such as THIS for Diplomat,
and Cultural Tourism DC attended the event.
In her welcome remarks, Mrs Rifat Sultana Akram, wife of Bangladesh Ambassador to the USA
thanked the Bangladesh Embassy ladies and Muslim Women Association for the initiative. She
highlighted the role of women in the socio-economic, political and cultural life of Bangladesh.
She said that Bangladesh is often cited as a model Muslim majority country by the international
community for its achievements in the field of women empowerment. Mrs Sultana Hakimi, Vice
President of Muslim Women Association and wife of Ambassador of Afghanistan to the USA
also spoke on the occasion.
In the cultural segment, there were recitations, film show, exhibition of artworks, and
demonstration of Sarees. Ms Rubi Parveen, wife of Mr. Muhammad Muhith, Deputy Chief of
Mission spoke on the life and works of Bangladesh’s national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam and recited
from translation of his poem titled Samya, the equality. Mr. Anis Ahmed, broadcast journalist of
Voice of America introduced Rabindranath Tagore to the audience and recited translation of
some of his famous works including Prithibi, the Earth. He noted that Rabindranath envisioned a
world without fragmentations and divisions, an aspiration transcending geographic and political
boundaries. Among the other attractions were screening of the short film titled “Beautiful
Bangladesh” and a visual demonstration of different kinds of Sarees, including Maslin, Jamdani,
Banarasi, Tangail Silk, Rajshahi Silk and designer Sarees. The audience took deep interest in the
varieties of Saree, a traditional costume so inextricably linked with the identity of women in
Bangladesh. In the sideline of the event, some paintings of Ms Sonia Sharmin, wife of Mr. MJH
Jabed, Counselor (Political) were displayed.
This was part of Embassy’s outreach efforts to promote Bangladesh culture to the wider audience
in the USA and internationally. The guests were served traditional Bangladeshi cuisine.
