Octopus: Making Contact WED Oct 2 | 8p Octopus intelligence is well known: They are able to navigate complex mazes, use tools, learn from each other, and solve all kinds of puzzles. Video of their escape artistry and ability to body-morph and use camouflage has gone viral on the internet. What is new in the world of octopus research is our discovery that these intelligent animals are individual personalities who are able to recognize faces and interact with people. Nature follows this new science through the story of a pet octopus and her relationship with a marine biologist and his teenage daughter.
Press series premieres SUN Oct 6 | 10p Set in the world of London newspapers – its past riven by hacking scandals, its present at the mercy of the digital age and the 24-hour news cycle, its future uncertain – this razor-sharp and observant drama explores today’s turbulent media landscape and the ethical dilemmas that journalists and editors face each day. The ensemble cast includes Charlotte Riley, Ben Chaplin and David Suchet.
Look Who’s Driving WED Oct 23 | 9pThe real possibility of a world in which cars no longer require human drivers has been sparked by a surge of innovation that’s being heralded by some as the biggest advance in transportation since horses gave way to automobiles. But successfully achieving such a radical transition poses an unprecedented set of technological, engineering, legal, regulatory and other challenges. Which ones have already been overcome, which still remain, and how are scientists and engineers trying to tackle them? NOVA looks for answers.

new series premieres MON Oct 7 | 9p
This new eight-part series, which airs Mondays and Tuesdays throughout the month, examines how today’s

season 6 TUESDAYS | Oct 8 and Oct 15 | 8p The new season begins October with “Hollywood Royalty,” an episode focused on the children of filmmaking legends. Dr. Gates talks to Isabella Rossellini, daughter of Ingrid Bergman and director Roberto Rossellini; Oscar winner Anjelica Huston, daughter of director-actor John Huston; and Mia Farrow, daughter of actress Maureen O’Sullivan and director John Farrow.
In “Off the Farm,” airing October 15, Dr. Gates helps two of television’s funniest performers – Emmy winners Melissa McCarthy and Eric Stonestreet – explore their family stories.
NOTE: Following these two new episodes, Finding Your Roots will present encore episodes from previous seasons until January 2020, when more new episodes from Season 6 will be available.

series premieres SUN Oct 13 | 11p
Based on true-life events in the German town of Mödlareuth at the end of World War II, this drama series follows the story of a
town divided between factions still loyal to the Nazis and others feeling hope and optimism as they learn of Hitler’s downfall
and the imminent arrival of U.S. troops to liberate the town. But that optimism is soon quashed after the U.S. troops depart and
the Russian troops move in to enforce the segregation of the German nation into East and West.

Rothko: Pictures Must Be Miraculous FRI Oct 25 | 10:35p
Explore the life of the celebrated artist whose luminous color field paintings helped define the abstract expressionist
movement – and whose groundbreaking work helped shift the art world epicenter from Paris to New York.
Photo courtesy of Kate Rothko Prizel and Christopher Rothko.
four-part series premieres WED Oct 23 | 10pThis ambitious new documentary series provides fascinating and fresh insights into our planet by expanding the range of perspectives from which to look. In addition to stunning satellite photography from space, drones were employed to generate footage, while helicopters and cameras on the ground provide more-conventional vantage points.
What is revealed from above is a cadence – the rhythm by which the Earth moves – as well as extraordinary colors and fascinating visual patterns. This is our home, as we’ve never seen it before.
