 THE PRIDE OF SLOVENIANBOOKBINDINGTe Janez Vajkard Valvasor Foundationestablished at the Slovenian Academy o Science and Arts in 2001 has recorded agrand achievement in publishing.In late 2008 it published the ‘IconothecaValvasoriana’, a acsimile o the graphiccollection assembled by the chie historiano Kranjska Region, Janez Vajkard Valvaor

and member o the Royal Academy, ater  whom the oundation was named. Te

original o that collection, known to very ew, is kept by the Biblioteca Metropolitanain Zagreb. Valvasoriana comprises 18books o large ormat. With 7752 graphicsand drawings it is a true printing andbookbinding masterpiece. One hundredprints are available. Te Slovenian Ministry o Culture will be purchasing 20. Many willbe sent as gits to various Slovenian libraries.Valvasor started his work on the collection

in the mid-17th century. It was shaped by his 14-year long travels through Austria,

Italy, Switzerland, Germany and France.  Among its authors are Albrecht Durer,Lucas Cranach, Jacques Calott and many more or less known German, Austrian,Italian, English and Kranjska masters o the16th and 17th century. Te co-ounder o the Valvasor Foundation, Jože Gostiša, who

  was also head o the Valvasoriana project,believes this achievement is o monumental,global signicance.

Iconotheca Valvasoriana is seen as the mostchallenging publishing project in Slovenia.

LITERARy IDENTITIESOF EuROPEIn the Cankarjev Dom art and congrcentre in Ljubljana an interesting project ispreparation. At a series o evenings, writersthe Literary Identities o Europe will prese

their work. Te series includes nine auth whose works are translated in the Euromcollection. Te writers will read parts o thtranslated novels and short stories and talktranslators and the authors o the preac

 who are experts on national literatures. Taudience is, o course, welcome to join conversation. Te purpose o meeting t

 writers is to learn o their histories, whare all part o a mosaic o identities, ideproblems and conficts - the mosaic called tEuropean Union. Nine evenings o literatu

  will present nine human and literary ao Europe. What connects them is literatuand the search or answers to the genequestions o humanity: who are we, a

 where are we going?

CONCLuSION OF THEINTERNATIONAL yEAROF INTERCuLTuRAL

DIALOGEuropean Year o Intercultural Dialogconcluded with the end o 2008. Sloveniaand its institutions took an active part,and were represented by Marko Peljhan,the European Ambassador o InterculturalDialogue. In his opinion, the Year o Intercultural Dialogue cannot last only a year, as or him it is a process with noend. Te incentive to dedicate a year tointercultural dialogue came ater the

observation o civil society that Europe andits institutions were too distant rom theircitizens and ater suggestions that activecitizenship should be supported. Tereore,

every Member State o the EuropeanUnion established a national coordinationcommittee, mainly o ministerialrepresentatives and representatives o thecultural institutions which take part inthe intercultural dialogue. Te intention

 was to include dierent segments o civilsociety, especially young people.

 Among the most important events withinthe ramework o the Year o InterculturalDialog, the Slovenian national coordinator

o the project Sonja Kralj Bervar listed the  January opening event at the Cankarjev dom art and congress centre, wherea conerence entitled ‘Intercultural

Dialogue as the Fundamental Value o theEU’ was held, as well as the conerence‘Europe, the World and Humanity in the21st Century’, which took place in Aprilin Ljubljana; the Youth Event 2008 in thetown Brdo pri Kranju; the establishmento the Euro-Mediterranean University o Piran at the beginning o June, and thenational project Europe in School, where10,000 young and 5,000 o their mentorsparticipated.
