The Caminos______Newsletter of the Arcadia Historical Society_____Spring 2018 President’s Message: A Tribute Most Deserving The Arcadia Historical Society held its Annual Membership Meeting with 60 individuals in attendance on Sunday, April 29 at Prince Erik Hall. Ed Andersen who is the Public Relations Director with the Arcadia Historical Society had the honor of presenting a Certificate of Appreciation to Gil Stromsoe for 30 years of service with the Arcadia Historical Society. Ed commented, “I don’t know many who have volunteered as many years as Gil has.” After an arousing applause, Gil did share that he served as the Society’s Treasurer for 25 of those years and he is still on the Society’s Board because “they won’t let me quit.” Gil Stromsoe has worked for many years as a CPA and just recently retired from Mark Schaefer Associates. He has also been an Arcadia chamber member and a member of the Rotary Club for a number of years. Gil’s wife Carol was present for the recognition. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Earlier on the same evening, Rev. Jolene Cadenbach, PhD gave an entertaining account of the life of Prince Erik of Denmark on a chicken ranch in Arcadia entitled “Royalty at the Ranch: Prince Erik and His Arcadia Legacy.” His home, built late 1924 or early 1925, still stands behind the Arcadia Congregational Church at 2607 S. Santa Anita Avenue. _______ Recently, a news clipping about Prince Erik was discovered in the archives of the AHS files: Prince & Princess Arrive from Abroad “The following clipping sent out by the Associated Press has much to say about an American family. ‘New York, March 11. – Chickens that cheep are dearer to the heart of Prince Erik than those at Charleston. The Prince, nephew of King Christian and cousin of King George of England, arrived today with his wife, the former Lois Booth, daughter of an Ottawa multi-millionaire. They came on the Lithuania. Prince Erik cares little for all the ceremony which surrounds royalty. He practices and lives democratically. He said: ‘I’ll be glad to get out to Arcadia, my ranch in California, where I have 6000 fowls. I think chickens which lay eggs are a thousand times better than jazz or the variety of chickens which extract golden eggs from foolish geese instead of laying them. I am a practical rancher now and that is my profession in life.’ It is not known just when the Prince and his wife will arrive in Arcadia, but from the nature of the dispatch it will undoubtedly be soon.’ ” - Karen Hou ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Up Coming Events: Sunday, July 1, 2018: AHS booth at the Downtown Patriotic Festival, time to be announced Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018 at 10 AM: “Lucky Baldwin: The Man Who Was Never Licked” Presenter: Ed Andersen, Public Relations Director of AHS; Saturday Morning Coffee, Floretta K. The Crown Prince of Sweden Visits Prince Erik’s Home in Arcadia

According toWilliamMcConnell of Charter Oak, his family lived in Arcadia from the early1920s to 1937. Over the years, his father, Oliver W. It seems that this visit to Arcadia by the Swedish Royal made news in Arcadia, and theentouragewasgivenapoliceescorttoPrinceErik’sestateon“DoubleDrive”(nowknownasSantaAnitaAvenue).
