The college provides free federal income tax form preparation assistance and a learning opportunity for our students. The faculty also trained more than 700 VITA site workers from across the city.

Greetings friends, alumni, faculty, staff and students. There is a special sense of enthusiasm this spring semester as we celebrate our 115th

Anniversary! In January, our college played its traditional active role in the city’s Martin Luther King March. We provided additional financial literacy education to incoming students through a $100,000 USA Funds® grant. Later our student engagement scholarship students began generating millions of dollars in refunds for our neighbors through our free income tax assistance site. In adherence to Black History Month, we were so proud of the February release of our very own oral history book, published by Texas A&M University Press. In observance of the month long celebration we welcomed Herman Boone, the inspiration for the movie Remember the Titans, as a President’s Lecture Series speaker. As students looked forward to Spring Break, March was just the beginning of the 115th anniversary festivities. The 5th annual Scholarship Golf Tournament raised $108,000 in donations. St.Philip’sCollegenursingeducationfacultymembersJosephineLaraandMelissaHancockhaveacceptedinvitationstoparticipateaswritingteammembersonaconcept-basedcurriculumimplementationproject.TheprojectisfundedbyaTexasHigherEducationCoordinatingBoardNursingInnovationGrantforassociatedegreelevelregisterednursingeducation.Thegrantprogramwasestablishedbythe77thTexasLegislaturetoreversethestate’sshortageofnursesandisadministeredbytheWorkforce,AcademicAffairsandResearchDivisionoftheBoard.

OnJanuary28,thefreeVolunteerIncomeTaxAssistance(VITA)siteatSt.Philip’sCollegeopenedwiththehelpofourstudentengagementscholarshipstudents.TheVITAsiteprovidesfreefederalincometaxformpreparationassistanceandfinancialliteracyservicesthroughApril15aswellasalearningopportunityforourstudents.TheBusinessInformationSolutionsfacultywhooverseetheprogramalsoconductedtrainingatSt.Philip’sformorethan700VITAsiteworkersfromacrossthecityin

preparationforacomplexshortenedtaxseasonattributabletofederalbudgetarybalancingmeasures.TheSt.Philip’sVITAsiteprocessedanestimated3,155e-filersprocessing$6,739,359inrefunds

fortheclientsservicedinthistaxseason.TheAlamoCollegesBoardofTrustees,thecityandtheInternalRevenueServicerecognizedthecollegeforproviding20yearsofoutstandingandinnovativevolunteerfederalincometaxassistancetolow-incometaxpayersfrom1992-2012.

The college gave teens an opportunity to show preteens how to use math and engineering.

The 35th annual Cowboy Breakfast attracted many supporters from St. Philip’s College to encourage students (below) who cooked for breakfast crowds.

USAFunds®,anIndianapolis-basednonprofitthathelpsAmericanfamiliesbenefitfrompostsecondaryeducation,hasawardeda$100,000granttohelpSt.Philip’sCollegestudentsmanagetheirstudentloanportfoliosthroughthecollege’sFinancialWealthManagementPlanforitsstudents.Thisgrantassistancerepresentssignificantfundingtoenhancestudentpreparedness,accessandsuccessbyprovidingfinancialandotherservices.USAFunds®primarilyserveslow-incomeandfirst-generationstudents,studentsofcolor,fosteryouthandadultlearners.

ThenonprofitcorporationnotifiedthecollegeofitsselectionJanuary22.OnFebruary19-21,St.Philip’sCollegePresidentDr.AdenaWilliamsLostonandmembersofheradministrationparticipatedintheUSAFundsSymposium.Thesymposiumfocusedondevelopingplanstoleveragefinancialliteracy,studentloandebtmanagementanddefaultpreventionasavehicletosupportstudentretentionanddegreecompletion.

“Atourinstitution,financialliteracy,wealthandsecurityarebeingaddressedattheonsetofthecollegeexperienceforallfull-time,first-time-in-collegestudents,”saidDr.SherrieLang,thecollege’sVicePresidentforStudentSuccess.“TheUSAFunds®grantisawelcomesupplementtoouroperationalbudgetforcriticalcollegefunctionsin2013,specificallyforprovidingfinancialliteracyeducationtoeachincomingstudent,”Langcontinued.

Financialliteracymodulesbecameavalue-addedelementofthemandatorystudentorientationprogramaswellasstudentdevelopmentcoursesinAugustof2012.

St.Philip’sCollegecelebrated2013NationalEngineeringWeekbyhostingitsAnnualGreenEnergyandEngineeringDayeventfor300students,grades5-12,February23attheCentersforExcellenceforMathematicsandforScienceinBuilding1onthecollege’sSouthwestCampus.

“Onehundredeightypreteenslistenedtoinspirationalspeechesfromteenageengineeringstudentsintheircommunity.Thiseventhelpedyoungpeopledevelopanunderstandingofhowvaluabletheyaretoourfuture,”saidDr.JoDeeDuncan,2013conferenceorganizeranddirectorofthecenters.“Wegaveteenagerstheopportunitytoshowpreteenshowtousemathandengineeringtomakeapositiveimpactintheirworld,”saidDuncan.

Highschoolstudentstouredthecollege’smanufacturingtechnologyandpowergenerationlaboratoriesandusedcomputer-assisteddraftinganddesigntomanufactureitemsfortheirpersonaluse.Allofthestudentsengagedinhands-onengineeringactivitieswithvolunteersfromSt.Philip’sCollege,UTSA,TexasStateUniversity,InstituteforElectronicsandElectricalEngineersandAmericanSocietyofCivilEngineers.

“Offeringprogramsforyouthinourcommunitytolearnmoreaboutcareerfieldstheyfindinterestingandstimulatingisapartofthecollege’sstrategicplantoincreasethenumberofitsstudentsengaginginSTEMdegrees.Theyoungpeoplebeganbuildingstrategicnetworksofpeersandrolemodelstohelpthemsucceedinachievingtheirdreamsthroughtheevent,”saidRubenPrieto,STEMspecialprojectscoordinatoratthecollege.

Severaldozenofthefirst-yearculinaryartsprogramstudentsatSt.Philip’sCollegeenjoyedaspecialpartoftheSPCexperienceduringthe35thannualCowboyBreakfastonJanuary25intheCowboysDanceHallparkinglot.TheCowboyBreakfastFoundationhasdonated$98,000toourculinaryprogramtodate.

TheCowboyBreakfaststartedoutasthekickoffeventtotheSanAntonioStockShowandRodeoandhasgrownintoahugestand-aloneevent.TheSt.Philip’sCollegeculinarystudentsarriveat2a.m.tostartcookingthemassiveamountsoffoodneededtoservebreakfastcrowdsof55,000ormorepeople.Thestudentsplayanintegralpartinhavingallthefoodreadytoservetothecrowdsofearlyriserswholineupasearlyas4:30a.m.toenjoythefeast.Televisionnewsandradiostationswerepresenttohighlightthetalentsofourstudentsinoneoftheworld’stop25ratedcollege-levelculinaryartsprograms.

OnJanuary21,morethan200St.Philip’sCollegestudents,faculty,staffandfamilymembersparticipatedintheCityofSanAntonio’s2013MartinLutherKingMarchbymarchingandoperatingacollegepromotionalboothduringtheeventwhichattractedinexcessof100,000participants.Thecity’s2.75mileprocessionpassedthecollege’sMLKcampuswhichofferedsupportasaVIAMetropolitanTransitpark-and-ridesiteforthemarch.

AcommemorativeprogramwasheldinPittman-SullivanParktomarkthecloseofthemarch.St.Philip’sCollegestudentvolunteersgreetedmarchersandprovidedthemwithinformationpromotingthecollege’sVolunteerIncomeTaxAssistanceservices(VITA).

Dr.AdenaWilliamsLoston,PresidentofSt.Philip’sCollege,wastherecipientofthe2013MartinLutherKingJr.DistinguishedAchievementAward.“Dr.Lostonisoutstandinginourcommunity,doingmorethingstoensurewearewell-represented,protected,andthatfreedomisexpressedamongthestudents,”saidKimJordan,ChairoftheCommission’sPublicAwardsCommittee.

formanewlyintegratedone.AfterbeatingoutlocalfavoritecoachBillYoasttobecomecoachoftheTitans,Boonefacedachallengeofhislifetime.Theteamcametogethertoformabondwithacommonvision–winningthestatechampionshipwithanundefeatedrecord.

Boonelecturedonthepowerofeducationtoempowerindividualsandaffectsocialchange.HesharedhowhisexperiencesasaneducatorandcoachinVirginiahaveshapedhismessageoftolerance.Hedeclaredtotheaudienceof600thatonlythroughthefullintegrationofallethnicgroupsthroughouteverylayerofoursocietycanwereachourfullpotentialasanation.Today,Booneisretiredbutcontinuestomotivateandinspireaudienceswithhispresentationsonrespect,teamworkandcommunityinvolvement.

TheSt.Philip’sCollegeDepartmentofTourism,Hospitality,andCulinaryArtsandtheUniversityofHouston’sConradN.HiltonCollegeofHotelandRestaurantManagementhavepartneredtodeliveraworld-classbachelor’sdegreetransferprograminhotelandrestaurantmanagementtoSanAntonioin2014,departmentchairMaryKunzannouncedinMarch.ThehospitalityprogramatUHHiltonCollegeisratedamongthetopthreeinAmerica,Kunzexplained.

“Weareexcitedabouthavingtwogreatpartners—St.Philip’sandSanAntonio,”saidJohnBowen,deanoftheUHHiltonCollege.“St.Philip’siswellknownforitshospitalityandculinaryprograms,andwelookforwardtoreceivingtheirgraduatesintoourbachelor’sprogram.ThispartnershipwillenablemoreresidentsofSanAntoniotobenefitfromthearea’svibranttourismeconomybyqualifyingforthemanymanagementopportunitiesthecityoffers.”

Thecollege’sculinaryartsprogramstudentsshowcasedtheirtalentsformorethan100SanAntonioHotelandLodgingAssociationannualluncheonmembersandguestsincludingBowenonFebruary27inthecollege’sHeritageRoom.

St.Philip’sCollege’sTourism,HospitalityandCulinaryArtsdepartmentprovidesfiveprimaryprogramsalongwithonefull-timefacultymemberandoneadvisortoworkdirectlywithstudentsineacharea.Allfiveprogramsinvolvestudentsinclassroom-basedlearningexperiences,aswellaslabexperience,andwork-basedlearningduringapracticumcourse.

TheculinaryartsandrestaurantmanagementprogramshavebeenacknowledgedwithanExemplaryratingfromtheAmericanCulinaryFederationFoundationAccreditingCommission.St.Philip’sCollegeisoneofonly25schoolsworldwidewiththecommission’sExemplarystatusandisratedExemplarybytheTexasHigherEducationCoordinatingBoard––anagencyoftheTexasstategovernmentwhosestaffoverseesallpublicpost–secondaryeducationinTexas.TheSt.Philip’sCollegeprogramtypicallygraduates100studentsannually,accordingtoKunz.

Alumniofthetourism,hospitalityandculinaryartswhotransferintotheuniversity’snewprogramhavereceivedcertificationfromtheAccreditingCommissionforProgramsinHospitalityAdministration™.Thisindustry-recognizedprofessionalcertificationhasbeengrantedtoonlythreehospitalityprogramsin

thestateofTexasandonlyoneprograminthecollege’sservicearea.Theformaltitleofthecommission’scertificationisCertifiedHospitalityGraduate(CHG),whichwasfirstawardedtograduatesofcommission–accreditedacademicprogramsin2009,andthecollege’scertificationofaccreditationfromthecommissioniseffective2012—2019.

“CurrentSt.Philip’sCollegestudentswillbethefirsttobenefitfromthisnewopportunity,”Kunzshared.St.Philip’sCollegecurrentlyoffersassociateofappliedsciencedegreesinhospitalityprofessions,whichfulfillsprerequisitesforsuccessfultransferandadmissiontotheUniversityofHouston’sHotelandRestaurantManagementbachelor’sdegreeprograminSanAntonio,saidKunz.

AnoutreachinitiativewithBowdenhasbeenunderwaysince2012.St.Philip’sCollegehasnineteenemployeescommittingtheirtimetopositivelyaffecttheacademicsuccessofat-riskstudentsthroughtheLunchBuddyProgramattheschool.Dr.Lostonbeganparticipatinginthementoringinitiativethisspring.

ZoeGrantham,astudentatSt.Philips,receivedsecondplaceinthisyear’spoetryslam.Eachpoetisjudgedbythecontentoftheirslamandthedeliveryandpassionbehindtheirperformance.ThefundraisersupportswomenandgirlsthroughtheWomenandGirlsDevelopmentFundestablishedthreeyearsagobytheSanAntonioAreaFoundation.Theirmissionistoenablewomenandgirlstoreachtheirfullpotential.Proceedshavebeengrantedto13nonprofitsthatfocusonissuesforwomenandgirls.

St.Philip’sCollegePresidentDr.AdenaWilliamsLoston(bottomphoto)hostedcommunityandbusinessindustrypartnersatSt.Philip’sCollege’sFifthAnnualGolfTournamentfundraisersponsoredbyCPSEnergyMarch1atTheRepublicGolfCourse.ThisannualfundraisingeventisinobservanceofSt.Philip’s115thAnniversary(whichwillbeformallycelebratedinSeptember).ThishistoricoccasionenablesSt.Philip’sCollegetocelebrateourproudhistory,raisemoneyforstudentscholarships,andengageourbusinessandcommunitypartners.Thisyear’seventattractedmoreparticipantsthanlastyearandraised$108,000.

Atotalof78sponsors,144golfers,alumniandfriendswereinfullsupportoftheSPCmission-providingscholarshipopportunities-throughgenerousgiftsandcashdonations.Presently,nearly80percentofSPCstudentsreceivefinancialaidofsometype.TheTournamentfundsStudentEngagementGrantsandPresidentialScholarsGrants.

CongratulationstoFrostBankfortakingfirstplaceinthetournament.Thegenerosityofallwhoparticipatedmakesadifferenceinthelivesofmanydeservingstudents.

Overthe2013SpringBreak,12ofthecollege’s17seniordiagnosticmedicalsonographyprogramstudentsoptedtositforthephysicsportionoftheircredentialingexamofferedbytheAmericanRegistryofDiagnosticMedicalSonographers.All12successfullypassedtheirexam,reportedprogramfacultymemberNancyLeah.

“Thisisveryexcitingnewsaswehaveworkedhardthefirsthalfofthesemesterinorderforthestudentstobeappropriatelypreparedforthisexam,andthestudentswererewardedfortheirhardwork.Icouldn’tbemoreproudofthem!”saidLeah.“Thisisonlythefirstofthethree-stepprocessourstudentsmustcompleteinordertoobtaintheirsonographycredentials,butitisanimportantonetocompletepriortograduation,”sheconcluded.

TheStudentLifestaffcoordinatedtheopportunityfortwelveSt.Philip’sCollegestudentstoattendthe2013TexasCommunityCollegeStudentDayattheTexasStateCapitolFebruary5inAustin.TexasCommunityCollegeStudentDayoccurseverytwoyearswhentheTexasLegislatureisinsession.

Notonlydothestudentshavetheopportunitytotourthecapitol,theyalsomeetwiththeirrespectiveelectedofficialsanddiscussthe

stateofeducationwhilestressingtheimportanceofcommunitycollegesinthestate.Communitycollegestudentsrepresentasignificantconstituencybecausemorethan750,000students

areenrolledinTexaspubliccommunitycollegesduringthefallof2012comparedto560,000atpublicTexas

universitiesand123,000atindependentcolleges

anduniversities,accordingtotheTexasAssociation

ofCommunityColleges.

TheAlamoCollegesBoardofTrusteesannouncedtheirapprovalofEmeritusstatusforDr.JohnTravisduringtheirFebruary19boardmeeting.

Throughouthis18-yearcareerwithSt.Philip’sCollege,Traviswasaprofessorinthecollege’ssocialandbehavioralsciencesdepartment.PriortoretiringfromactiveservicewiththecollegeinDecember2012,Traviswastherecipientofthecollege’s2013TeachingExcellenceAwardanda2012NationalInstituteforStaffandOrganizationalDevelopmentAward.Theinstitutefocusesnationalattentionondevelopmentaleducationandtheuniquerolecommunitycollegesplayinprovidingaccessibleeducation.Inremarksduringtheboardmeetingceremony,Travissaid,“Ihavelearned

somethingenduringfromeachoneofyouasIbeginthesenextchaptersofmylife,withtheNISODaward,ourstudentgovernment’sprofessorofthemonthaward…allnaturalthingsmoveforward.IthasbeenaprivilegetobewithyouandIthankyoufortheopportunitytoserveasyourambassador.”
