ALLAN SCHLOTHAUER, CGCS PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE * Many thanks to Brian iforris, his staff, and Silverado Country CI ud for hosting our Annual Superintendent/Professional Tournament. As in the past few years we again had a full field. A 144 players began on the South Course under ideal conditions. With some tough pin place- ments and quick greens, the course played tough for most of us. The winners seemed to handle it all right. Congratulations to all the winners who played exceptionally well. This year we tried a new form of scoring, via computer. Tne scoring on the commputer seemed to work rather well. The delay in the scorina came when scorecards had to be rechecked due sane mix up on how the scores were to be posteu. I assure you it will be corrected and ran smoothly next year. Many thanks to Tan Jackson for helping in the scoring using his commputer. Also, many thanks to Dr. Pete Zidnak for taking time out to give a nice presentation on sane of the rules that Superintendents must be aware of on the golf course. Thanks to all who attended and made our tournament a success. See you next month at Tilden Park. Where I hit them, I didn't even disturb the deer, no wonder • they are in the fairway.

Two interns Join Poppy Hills Staff

Wayne Lindelof "Clay" Smith

Two Cal Poly of San Luis Obispo graduates joined the Poppy Hills Golf Course greens staff May 1.

William "Clay" Smith, 26, and Wayne S. Lindelof, 25, were the recipients of NCGA's internships. The intern pro-gram was reinstated this year after a five-year suspension during the construction of Poppy Hills.

Smith and Lindelof will be on the staff at Poppy Hills for one year. They then will move to other golf courses for one more year to enhance their knowledge in different environments.

The selections were made in cooperation with the Golf Course Superintendents Association of Northern California. The interns will be paid with funds budgeted from NCGA dues.

"After an extensive selection process, these two young men were selected from many outstanding applicants," said Bob Eirich, chairman of the NCGA's Green Section. "We hope they will continue a successful program and a couple of years from now we will have two well-trained green superintendent candidates."

Chief Executive Officer John Zoller reports Smith and Lindelof will work under the supervision of Poppy Hills Green Superintendent Paul Colleran.

Smith is a native of Pebble Beach. He attended Oak Grove High School in San Jose before matriculating to Cabarillo College in Aptos and then to Cal Poly.

Lindelof, who lives in Folsom, attended American River College in Sacramento prior to his schooling at Cal Poly
