Is anyone willing to step up? Well, since the last newsletter, we have had a couple of significant contests. The annual Phoenix Speedworld Q-40 Classic was held in February, and I’m told it went well with about 75 entries; I didn’t make it this year due to knee surgery in January. Congratulations to Lee Von Der Hey for winning first place and to Tony Lopez for taking fast time. The next event was the first of a planned annual meet called “Springfest,” held in Whittier, CA and hosted by the San Gabriel Valley RC Club. I believe this was the brainchild of Lee Von Der Hey; the meet was well-run thanks to Lee’s attention to detail. Congratulations to Jim Allen for winning AMA 428 as well as taking fast time. Congratulations to Jim Padelt for winning AMA 424 as well as taking fast time. NATIONAL POINTSI mentioned in the lastnewsletter that the points for2007 are final and shirts are onorder; I’m pleased to reportthat I have received the shirts,and I will be shipping them outover the next week or so.

While I’m on the subject ofnational points, it is veryimportant that each and everymember gets credited with allpoints earned. So, if your grouphosts a race, it is important thatthe results be sent to yourdistrict VP in a timely manner,i.e. the following week. It isjust as important that eachdistrict VP send those results tothe appropriate pointcoordinator in a timely manner,i.e. the following week. If thishappens as it should, the pointcoordinator can tally the pointsand publish standings as we gothrough the year, and you cantrack how you’re doing andmaybe catch a mistake ormissing race. It also makes thepoint coordinator’s job a loteasier.

Phoenix Classic Q40The racing season in the districtis now in full swing. Of course,the big news is the PhoenixClassic Q40 race hosted by theSpeedworld R/C Flyers. Thebuildup to this race wasunprecedented, and the actualevent lived up to everyexpectation. The final tally ofentrants was 74, withcontestants representing sixcountries. Racers beganarriving at the field as early asSunday, a week before the race,and there was a steadilyincreasing crowd for practiceeach day leading up to the race.I was fortunate to get there onTuesday and was able to get ina lot of practice, but moreimportantly, got to spend a lotof time with friends.Sometimes I think that thepractice days flying and hangingout with the other racers is asmuch fun as the race itself.

The race was run with the usualefficiency that only theSpeedworld club can offer, andthere were over 150 heats runover the two days. Theweather, while threatening onFriday, was great for theweekend of racing, althoughthe really fast air never seemedto materialize. The systemdeveloped for the WorldChampionship in 2007 was usedat the race, and the capabilitiesof this system are spectacularand were appreciated by all.The pit area was expanded forthis year, which was good

because we really needed allthe extra space toaccommodate the largeturnout. This year, theSpeedworld club put on theStaurday night barbeque withDarrol Cady doing the honors atthe grill and turning out someterrific steaks!

It seems amazing, but this racemarked the one-yearanniversary of the introductionof the Nelson L.S. motor. It isobvious that people have usedthe year well and have figuredout how to run this motoreffectively. Unlike last year,there were very few flights withpoor engine runs, and mostpeople were going really fast.It is also obvious that thepropeller problem has beenpretty well resolved, thanks tothe research by Lee Von DerHey in the development of theheavy spinners and thecommitment by Fred Burgdorfto continually improve thepropellers we use. Propellerfailures were almost non-existent in Phoenix this year.

The racing began promptly onSaturday morning andcontinued at a breakneck paceuntil Sunday afternoon. Whenall the dust had settled, onlyLee Von Der Hey had a perfectscore and stood alone in firstplace. The flyoff for secondplace ended up with ScottMcAfee in second, FredBurgdorf in third, and Dan Kane

in fourth. The flyoff for fifthwas won by Tom Strom Sr., withA.J. Seaholm taking sixth place.Gary Schmidt, Jim Allen, TravisFlynn, and Gino Del Ponterounded out the rest of the topten places. In eleventh placewas Tony Lopez who flew thefast time for the contest with a1:00.84, the only one to getunder 1:01 (although MatiasSalar did turn a 1:01 flat).Check out the NMPRA websitefor the full standing listings.

With 74 contestants and over150 heats, there was so muchto take in, although there werea few notable things this year.The first was the large andenthusiastic group from Mexico.What a great group of guys! Ihope they can get to moreraces. It was also great to seeBob Smith come out to the race.Bob showed that he is still aforce in pylon racing and with alittle help from Lyle Larson did a

phenomenal job placing 13th.It was obvious that Bob reallyenjoyed his return to racing ashe had some of the biggestsmiles of the weekend. It wasalso nice to see our district takesix of the top ten places andfast time.

This race has evolved into aspectacular event rivaling theNATS in the level of competitionand prestige. It is a MUSTATTEND race if you are at allinterested in Q40. No race isrun better; no club is more

enthusiastic or more preparedto put on a premiere racingevent. No facility can compareto Speedworld, and thecompetition is unmatched. Isuggest you make reservationsfor next year ASAP.

SpringfestWith the Phoenix Classic Q40race being such a success, itwas interesting to see how thefirst annual Springfest Q500race would stack up. Springfestis the idea of Lee Von Der Heyand was created to be anotherfirst class Q500 race in the moldof the Phoenix Winterfest race.Held at Whittier Narrows fieldand hosted by the San GabrielValley R/C Flyers, Lee and theclub put an enormous effort intoplanning and preparing for thisevent. Jim Allen brought outthe fantastic AMA race systemfrom Phoenix for this race; amovie studio tour cart wasprocured for flight linetransport; extensive trainingwas provided for the workers;and a real chef was tasked withfood preparation. The onlything that Lee could not takecare of was the weather, whichgave us winds of 25-30 mph onSaturday and forced us to call ita day after only 3 1/2 rounds.Fortunately, Sunday was aperfect day, and we were ableto easily get in another 5rounds and flyoffs done before2:00.

District Newsone of the fastest pylon venuesin the country and has been thesite of many previous records.The racing at Springfest wasfirst-class and intense.Unfortunately, along withintense racing came someintense carnage. Twice, GinoDel Ponte, Travis Flynn, andScott McAfee raced. Twice,poor Gino lost a new Ninja inthe heat; once in the bad airbehind Travis and Scottbetween two and three, andonce in a spectacular mid-airwith Scott right on top of pylonone. Gino’s thirteen-hour drivehome must have seemed evenlonger after his unluckyweekend. In the end, Jim Allenended up with the win in 428and the fast time of a 1:06.76.Lee Von Der Hey ended up insecond, and Tony Lopez tookthird. Fourth place was GarySchmidt in a very exciting flyoffwith Bobby Ponek who tookfifth. Gary, who had begunflying an extremely conservativecourse after several years ofhard luck and many brokenairplanes, hasn’t lost anairplane in a long time and wasflying hard on the deck.Obviously, Gary thinks its timefor some new airplanes! It wasalso great to see Dave Hill backracing, and he did great comingin seventh. In APRA, BIG JimPadelt once again took tophonors and fast time with a1:34.53.

It looks as if Springfest has the

potential of becoming one ofthe major races. Given theperfectionist approach of LeeVDH as CD and the enthusiasmof the club and the great funthat everyone had at this race,it should be on your schedulefor next year! Don’t miss thefull results and great pictures onthe NMPRA website.

District 2, Tom Strom, Jr.

Well, I guess I should start bysaying hello and introducingmyself. My name is Tom StromJr., and I am the new NMPRADistrict 2 VP. I’m excited towrite this article as there are abunch of cool things happeningup here in the Northwest! Oursummer season starts in just alittle over a month, and we alsoget to be host to a West CoastRacing Series contest this year!It has been a couple of yearssince we last hosted a Gold Cuprace, but those of you whoattended already know you aregoing to be in for a greatcontest! We have several localclubs up here including thePylon Racers of Puget Soundand the Sanderson Field RCFlyers that are huge supportersof racing, and that makesputting races together so easy.

Our summer season here kicksoff on May 3rd and 4th inShelton, WA. The contest willbe hosted by the PROPS andthe Sanderson Field RC Flyers.This is a beautiful racing site onan inactive runway at

Sanderson Field, and the localclub there always comes out inforce to provide course workersand lunch every day! Classes ofracing will be 424 APRA, 428Q500, and 422 Q40. Contestdirector for this event will beDan Nalley, and you can contacthim at (425)306-3730 if youhave any questions or wouldlike to attend. If any of you canmake the trip to any of theraces up here in the Northwest,you will not be disappointed aswe have some of the bestracing sites in the country.

September 6th and the 7th willbe the West Coast Racing Seriesrace, and it will be held inShelton, WA at Sanderson Field.424 APRA and 428 Q500 will beflown on Saturday. Sunday willbe 424 APRA and 422 Q40. Iwill be sending in a race flyerfor the event to be put in futureNMPRA newsletters, so look forit in upcoming issues. Lookforward to seeing all of youthere!

District NewsDistrict 3, John Gemmel

Hello Everyone,Just a short note this month.Update on the 2.4 GHz troublesthat Roy and I were having inPhoenix at the Q40 Classic.Team JR and Horizon Hobbiesare working hard to uncover themystery of our problems thatwe experienced in Phoenix.

Their main focus is to determinethe root cause of our three orfour crashes during landing.Nothing has been clearlydetermined yet, but I wanted tolet you know that Horizonreports that the RF link in theAR6200 and AR7000 isidentical. There is no reasonwhy the AR6200 should notperform just as well as theAR7000.

There has been a lot of chit-chat and many "opinions" onthe internet forums and nearlyall are not based on scientificfacts. Horizon is working todetermine cause based onfacts, RF measurements, andother testing methods. I urgeyou not to jump to conclusions.I remain confident in the JRX9303 transmitter and theSpektrum line of receivers - allof them. I am waiting for cleardetermination from thetechnical team at Horizon, anduntil then, I am taking steps tobeef up all aspects of my radio,electrical, and mechanicalinstallation in my racers.

This issue’s Nifty Racing Tipcomes from Roy Andrassy. Royis one of the fastest guys in ourdistrict and there’s a reasonwhy. He tries to eliminate manyof those reasons that cause azero. One area that needsattention is the care andfeeding of your fuel tank. A fewof us in the district have foundseveral brand new Jett CG tanksthat have air leaks coming fromeither the fuel feed area or fromthe pressure line. This cancause inconsistent fuel flow tothe motor. Often this results inan inconsistent needle settingand sometimes it can cause themotor to go lean during theflight.

Roy has found a way toproactively prevent air leaks inthese tanks and thus eliminatejust one more reason forposting a zero. Roy explains hismethod of sealing potential airleaks in this type of fuel tank.

First apply Flash Black CA gluearound the existing heat shrinkplastic seal and also aroundboth the outlet points for thepressure and fuel feed lines.After the Flash Black CA sets,paint some 12 minute epoxyaround the seal areas once

again. The key to the next stepis to use a piece of 1” I.D. heatshrink tubing that has adhesiveglue on its inner wall. This typeof heat shrink can be purchasedfrom most stores electronicssupply stores. Slide a piece ofthe heat shrink tubing over theneck of the fuel tank and shrinkit down really well with a hot airgun. Now add a little silicone tothe pick up tube area. Aftereverything sets, pressure testthe tanks under water toconfirm there are no leakspresent.

We have had no racing in ourdistrict throughout our “winter”season with the Tangerine/ CliffTelford Memorial race not beingheld by the RCACF group asthey usually do. Hopefullysomething is in the works tohold the Tangerine event againin 2008, even if it is not at theRCACF field. I will keepeveryone informed as I also getinformation. It would be sad tosee another racing venue lost.

The first race of 2008 was heldon March 29-30th by theImperial R/C Club in Mulberry,Florida. At this time I do nothave the results and will reportthem to everyone in the nextnewsletter. March is usually awindy month in Florida, and Ihope every day will be calm forracing. This is also the firsttime that the Mulberry groupwill host a 422 race. That isscheduled for Sunday alongwith the conclusion to a 2-dayrace for 424. 428 will be flownonly on Saturday.

Our next race in the District willbe held in Ft. Lauderdale by theMarkham Park Pilot’sAssociation and will be the 2ndGold Cup race of 2008. I lookforward to seeing everyonefrom up north and the westcoast there. When you comedown, you can start to defrostfrom your winter; it should be awarm weekend. This race willbe held on April 18-20th, withthe 18th being a practice day.424 will also be raced in-between the 422 rounds bothdays.

At this time we do not have anyother races scheduled until wemeet back in Ft. Lauderdale fora race in September. Thenthere will be a race in Mulberryin October, and then there willbe a race in November inCocoa, Florida. I will have thefinal dates and flyers out assoon as I get them. If your clubwants to hold a race, get withme and we’ll set-up a date andget the word out to the rest ofDistrict 7.
