This year, the AIA Nationalconvention was held in NewYork City. There were sixteen
resolutions that were voted on andthree bylaw amendments for consid-eration. All agenda items passedunanimously. All resolutions andamendments can be found in detaila t : h t tps : / /www.a ia .org /ar t i -cles/201401-new-res-olutions-recommit-aia-to-equity-and-
A vast majority of theresolutions focusedon equity, diversityand sexual harass-ment in the profes-sion, while concen-trating on modifyingthe Institute’s Codeof Ethics and Professional Conduct.Although the meeting lasted wellover the al lotted t ime of anhour and a half , there was a
continuousrespectfuland civilconversationthroughoutthe night.
Since the meeting ran through mostof the opening ceremonies, it also got
me out of the heavyconstruction trafficscattering throughoutthe city. Scaffoldingblanketed the town, and ten-minute cabrides reached thirtyminutes due to roadclosures. Needless tosay, walking and thesubway were the bestbets. To add to the con-
gestion, seminars were heldthroughout lower Manhattan inseven different locations. This defi-nitely helped me log twenty miles onfoot over two days.

At May’s meeting, we had an eye-openingpresentation on masonry movementjoints. I cannot speak for everyone who
was in attendance, but Jeff’s presentation mademe question what (I thought) I knew aboutmasonry construction. Every building moves, soproper movement joints are an important ele-ment to take into consideration. The presenta-tion covered seven aspects of movement joints;the basics, corners, openings, parapet and top-of-wall details, horizontals, cement-basedveneers, and sealant color selection. Designingbased on these principles will help mitigatecracking, and as we all know… cracks are whack!
Masonry units expand / contract based on theirmaterial make up. In general, CMU shrinksand brick (clay) expands. Due to this variation,it is recommended that movement joints forCMU are 3/8” wide and those for clay brick are1/2" wide. There are multiple types of move-ment joints for masonry construction includingcontrol joints, expansion joints, and isolationjoints.

a look back at our May chapter meeting by Valerie Nawojski, AIA/EIC VicePresident
It is important to know when and how to use each type ofmovement joint. Control joints are typically used in con-crete masonry to reduce the occurrence of shrinkage-related cracking. Expansion joints, on the other hand, aretypically used to accommodate thermal and moistureexpansion in clay brick masonry. Isolation joints separateadjacent sections of masonry to allow relative movement inthree directions. Describing these joints in specifications isnot enough information for the mason, so it is important toproperly call out / detail these on your construction documents.
(continued on next page) u
FUN FACT: Control and expansion joints DO NOTneed to align in cavity walls. Yes, you read that right! Now that your mind is blow, let’s continue on tosealant color selection.
Selecting a sealant color is something that can havea big impact on the overall aesthetics of a buildingyet is often an afterthought. Should you match yoursealant color to the mortar or the masonry units? That depends on what you want to accomplish in
regard to the masonry movement joints. If you wantto minimize visibility of the joints, you should matchthe masonry unit color as close as possible. If youhave multiple colors of masonry, you will need to uti-lize multiple colors of sealant. On the other hand, ifyou want to use your masonry joints as an accent youcan match the mortar color. If you’re feeling froggy, you can even specify a completely different sealant color!
For crack-free, aesthetically pleasing masonry keepthese principles in mind. Please reach out to JeffDiqui with any questions regarding this presenta-tion. He can be reached at [email protected] n
