President’s Letter,Dear AzQHA Members,

What an honor it is to be your AzQHA President. Thank you to our dedicated board ofdirectors for their confidence and welcome to our new board members. As I write, theWestern States EMO Championship is ready to kick off. The Youth Excellence Seminarstarts soon as well as the Youth World Show, and final plans are under way for The FallChampionship Show. Safe travels to everyone during this busy summer. Thoughts fromBrendan I was walking up the stairs out of the Arena with my fellow judges after placinga tough Senior Western pleasure class. A spectator looked at us and said “those horseslooked awful!” I glanced at him with dismay and kept walking. One of my fellow judgeshowever stopped dead in her tracks and said “Sir, I thought that was an excellent class. What those horses are doing is very difficult and takes a lot of training. You may notwant to do the class but you have to appreciate the effort and talent.” By the time shehad finished speaking with him he had received a crash course in western pleasureand was eagerly awaiting the next class. I realized at that point; the man was just re-peating what he had heard from someone else. I also realized that it was my duty as ahorseman to take the opportunity to educate, just as my friend had done. Each one ofus has the ability to create positive change. Most of the negativity in our industrycomes from lack of knowledge. I vowed that day that I would not miss another oppor-tunity to educate and be a proponent for our sport. All of it. Since then I have tried tonot let those comments go, whether they are directed at the politics of judging or thepresentation of the horses. I take it as opportunity to educate someone in a positivemanner. It is important that the public know there are many safeguards to a level play-ing field and the horses’ welfare is paramount. Now more than ever it is important for usto support each other. The success of the industry depends on the success of each partof it. All of us our bound first by our love of the horse. I hope each of us can be an am-bassador for our sport.

SincerelyBrendan BrownArizona Quarter Horse Association President

LETTER FROM THE EDITORDear AzQHA members and friends, What a year it has been so far! AzQHA continues tolead the industry in hosting the biggest shows in the na-tion. Once again, the ArizonaYouth are set to make history

Our May 4th show at Westworld had a great turnout. Aseveryone knows we added AQHA Cutting, WorkingCowhorse, and Boxing to our No Bling show. We had 16Cutters and 24 Working Cowhorse entries. So we are off toa great start. The IEA kids came out in great numbers andif you check out AzQHA Face Book you will see quite afew of them participating in the Ranch Riding classes.

Ryan Kail and his barn made it a family affair and hada potluck lunch in front of his barn using shavings bags aschairs. They had a great time.

Our jumping classes have continued to grow and had22 entries. We are also starting to see some All-Breedjumpers coming to participate. Special thanks to Pam

Stubbs and Carey Runyon for supplying and helping set upall the jumps.

Our next No Bling show is December 14, 2019 atWestworld. We are still offering Show Dough to new ex-hibitors who would like to come learn, experience, or tryany of our classes at the No Bling Show. For more infor-mation check out AZQHA webpage.

I want to say a special thanks to all the staff, volun-teers, and youth volunteers for all your help. It is greatlyappreciated.

See you at the next show.Dana Yingling

During the SWQHA show in Las Cruces NM, JerriHerrington and her steady grey gelding DF ColonelSmokey took a bad fall in the AQHA Boxing class.Jerri and Smokey hit the ground in a huge pile ofdust. The wind was blowing so bad and the dust wasso thick those outside the arena never saw them hitthe ground. Several agile folks ran out into the arenato help. Literally before the dust cleared Jerri waswalking out of the arena with a little help from herfriends. Thankfully both horse and rider escaped se-rious injury. Jerri is tough, never missed a stride andcontinued showing throughout the weekend with alarge hematoma on her leg. And as if that was notenough, she drove home, repacked and headed toGuthrie, OK for the VRH World Show.

Stephenie Bjorkman is likethe jewelry she sells distinct, bold, highly regarded, and al-ways evolving. Born andraised in Arizona, Stephenie isa second-generation jeweler. She has worked side by sidewith her mother Sami Jacksince 1997. In 2013, Samiretired and Stephenie be-came the CEO and presidentof Sami Fine Jewelry.Stephenie continues tobuild Sami Fine Jewelry’s reputa-tion for original jewelry, exciting events, crazy marketing, andsuperior customer service.Even though Stephenie was raised on the floor of jewelry

store, she never expected to sell jewelry, much less run a storeranked among the top 5 “cool jewelry stores” in the country.Since childhood, Stephenie has always beena western girl to the core. The crazy part isthat no one in her family is “horsey”!Stephenie just woke up one day and told hermom she loved horses, her mom got her rid-ing lessons, and that was that! Since then,Stephenie has lived and breathed horses. She started taking lessons when she was

about 8 years old. She got her first horsearound the age of 12. She loved to ride inlocal gymkhana’s, team rope, and she com-peted for just about every rodeo queen title inArizona. In fact, she was first runner up forMiss Rodeo Arizona, and runner up for MissCountry Thunder USA.As she grew older, her parents told her she

needed to start paying for her horse. To support her hobby and afford gasto the barn, she worked multiplejobs, but spent most of her time sell-ing cowboy boots at Saba’s WesternWear. This seemed like a natural fit, since she knew all the horse peopleand was a total cowgirl! In 1997 she had to quit her job andSaba’s to help her mom at the jewelrystore. Her parents were getting a di-vorce, and two weeks after they movedout her mother was diagnosed withbreast cancer. Her mom couldn’t do iton her own, and that is when Stephenie

officially started working in jewelry. At first Stepheniethought it was just going to be for a year or so, to help hermom… Who knew that 22 years later, she would follow in hermother’s footsteps and jewelry would become and be part of

her passion?Being Sami’s daughter, Stephenie was naturally born with

expensive taste. Unfortunately, the horses she wanted weremega expensive compared to her rope horses. In order im-prove her riding, she knew she had to step up her horsepower. All of the fancy trained horses she wanted cost a lot ofmoney! Stephenie set her mind to this goal, and purchased, trained and upgraded her horse until so she could eventuallyafford the type of horse of her dreams… a reining horse! Around 2008, Stephenie got her first reining horse! Since

then she has worked her way up in the reining world from agreen as grass rider to a non pro! Working full time and

showing is a difficult combination. Butsomehow Stephenie has figured out howto run a store with 13 employees, designjewelry, have a family, and show horses. In 2017 she added another discipline to

her riding. Coming from a team ropingbackground, she naturally was attracted tothe reined cow horse. In 2017 Stepheniedecided to try it. Her reining horse, Elec-tric Java aka “Maxwell” seemed like hemight look at a cow (Shinning Spark onhis papers), so she thought she would giveit a whirl. Cowhorse ended up being agreat fit for her! Her lifelong dreams be-came reality for her in 2017-2018. Be-tween her two horses, she won 2 worldtitles in the Reined Cowhorse, world titlein the Ranch Riding, and even won theReining Affiliate finals!!! Between thetrophies, saddles, buckles, and money, shecouldn’t believe that all the years ofblood, sweat, and tears had finally paidoff!! With that being said, Stephenie has

somehow figured out a way to incorporatehorse showing and the jewelry store! There is no doubt, if you show horses youwill run into her! She usually travels toall the major horse shows and finds her-self helping her horse friends with all oftheir jewelry needs. One of her special-ties includes making peoples’ brands intofine jewelry with diamonds and gold. Sheis also a major sponsor of many Reiningand Cowhorse events all over the country. For the past two years she has even made

the ring for NRCHA’s World’s GreatestHorseman Competition. This year shehas also designed jewelry for the upcom-ing Run for a Million NRHA and Yellow-stone premier reining event. Outside of the horse industry, her pro-

motions and in-store events have earnedher the title “Queen of Marketing” fromIndesign, a magazine covering high-endAmerican designer jewelry retailers. In-store, the industry’s leading trade publica-tion, named Sami Fine Jewelry one ofAmerica’s Coolest Stores in 2008. In2012, Stephenie was one of four nomi-nees for Fountain Hills Businessperson ofthe Year and in 2019 she was finallynamed Fountain Hills Businessperson ofthe year.Stephenie maintains the blue-rib-

bon standards that have distin-guished Sami Fine Jewelry foryears. (She still makes time forriding horses, too.) And she isalways looking for new waysto keep things unexpectedand exciting. Whetherpartying hard at an an-nual Ladies’ Night ortrying to break aGuinness WorldRecord, Stephe-nie’s thousandsof customerscan counton twothings:

They’re going to find beautiful designerjewelry in a range of looks and prices. And they’re going to have a great timedoing it.
